Happy Sunday CoGs, OTTers and most importantly, Backstagers!
Why yes, this did come out before the asscrack of Sunday morning Gerry.
As far as unique systems, the overarching experience of the rpg community being able to reach out, touch D&D and use the language of that game engine system to communicate makes the translation necessary. When you take systems that require deeper role playing outside of the roll play you get different dice. 7th Sea in its varied incarnations speaks to just that. As a game it is world’s away from the World of Darkness engine. The role mechanics of the system dictate how you roll in other words.
Past that, a great set of Golden Buttons worthy of following.
I played AD&D 1e, and had the entire collection of “yellow band” modules, books, etc. as well as a massive Dragon collection. I sold it all in the 2012-2014 period. I regret it…
Whatever. It’s only stuff, right? I don’t RPG anymore anyway. I barely play miniature games!
I still have WAY too much stuff.
Every set of rules has its own inherent theming and concepts that will apply to anything it touches.
If those concepts don’t fit your setting then it is the wrong set of rules to use.
That applies to Mork Borg, Powered by the Apocalypse, D&D/D20/OSR.and every other system out there.
Therefore :
D&D is only ever good if you want D&D (period)
You’re not going to get a good experience if you want to lean into horror or a more grounded experience.
The travesty that was D20 Call of Cthulhu should never have been attempted.
Of course, Call of Cthulhu is based on the Basic Roleplaying system, which was originally designed for Runequest (and also got spun off into Stormbringer/Elric, Hawkmoon, Ringworld, Elfquest and Superworld before being tweaked into a D20 instead of D% for Pendragon).
I have had trouble getting people to play anything that wasn’t 5e, BRP or Hero System based.
Jessica Fletcher with a tommy gun cleaning out frogtown in down town innsmouth sounds is a image that sticks. I will have to take a look at brindlewood thanks 👍
The Sloppy Jalopy miniatures are availble from sally 4th
When we first started playing The One Ring it was funny seeing D&D players brains melt when they killed something without real provocation and started to accumulate “shadow” also when they realised they had to be careful when interacting with NPC’s.
Saying that I started with D&D in the 70’s but with each new version the “min maxing” seems to have grown worse where some players seem to find this the key part of the game rather than the role playing.
These days we play a lot of Free League games (The One Ring, Dragonbane and Mutant Year Zero) but also still some retro gaming with Flashing Blades (one of the most complex combat systems for a GM to run) and the original Deadlands.
Hello Sunday
00:00 All about the Backstabbing!
07:30 Chicken Nuggets?!
14:05 Poo Sticks? oO
59:00 A game about small insects?
1:17:00 All the Sulus with rapiers.
Gamings systems are nice but you need a good GM. Without a good GM the best system falls apart quickly.
I’m pleased to see everyone is still thinking about their Kings of War armies. This is exactly as it should be and has nothing to do with my intervention. I intend to bring a filthy Abyssal Dwarf army when I come over as whatever list build I come up with it is likely to by at least a bit filthy. That is the nature of Abyssal Dwarfs and exactly as it should be. Looking forward to see Forces of Nature and maybe even wet Undead across the table. Exciting times.
A very interesting set of GBs this week. Well done to all three of you.
HAPPY SUNDAY…….
