About the Project

Note on change of the title (09.01.2021): I guess it is quite self-explanatory. Since some people apparently follow this project and may be interested in following it forward, I decided to keep it alive for the time being. Original description: I intend this project to be chronicle of my hobby progress throughout the year. I usually post photos of my painting on the forums, but I’ll probably add more pictures here with occasional recipe and maybe a battle report from time to time.

I love those little guys from Unit 9, they are truly therapeutic for me. The minis are interesting, somewhat unusual, yet very easy to paint and deliver almost instant gratification. I spent maybe 60 minutes on one shown below.

Bellow you can see a mini I painted some time ago as my entry to the Bromad Academy painting contest for quarter 3 2020. It was one of attempts in the anti-burnout therapy. I wasn’t entirely happy with the result, but luckily the judges delivered favourable verdict – the title shows my achievement.

All the contest entries can be seen here: https://www.bromadacademy.com/2020/10/painting-entries-003-lieutenants/

The mini was painted mostly with oils, acrylics were used on tabard  and those weird lights (including fluo red), also edge highlights and freehand were done with acrylics.

I try to fight my burnout by changing the pace more frequently. I painted a knight for competition last week (I’ll show him off in a couple a days) and then a couple of lower level dudes, like tis Lazy Boy from Unit9.

His outfit looks a bit like it belonged to a dock worker and the gun he’s holding was apparently welded from different pieces of scrap. Since I own a team of Deck Crew from Statuesque, I painted him to match their colours and style. Last picture in the set shows comparison.

…or in this case more literally ‘yakuzing on’. This is Mr Satoru from Unit 9’s Patereon. I did him as fun little side project exploring potential of oil paints. Just to give you perspective, the suit was done as you see it here in 15 minutes, that’s faster than airbrush in my case.

Well, I had a very slow quarter. In August and September I only pulled two models off. Among kids and wife around 24/7 and a university course I enrolled to, I had very little time, but what actually killed my fun was that model bellow. When I was painting her she looked ok, I was happy, but the photos show all the shortcomings and really broke my resolve to paint more. I think I lose eyesight faster than before.

That being said, I like the model very much, I actually printed her again to repaint under better circumstances.

To double-check on my abilities, I then did a fast job on that one, which only proved my burnout was a real thing.

EDIT: I forgot about one more painted around the same time as the other two.

A 3h job. Strange mini, some parts (chest, suit) are cool, others (oversimplified metal arm and face) are rather underwhelming.
