Hi all,
I recently finished a year long campaign of Coriolis with my roleplaying group and we’re about to launch back into D&D with Curse of Strahd. My players have been excited about this for some time and have put more effort into characters than ever before, one of them even going so far as getting a custom mini from Hero Forge.
I want to match their efforts by upping my own game and trying new ways to DM the game. I already use a screen for maps and visuals and I use music and soundboards extensively. I’ve already prepped letters, handouts, posters and even gone full Art Attack on a wax-sealed scroll for CoS but I’m still looking for a way to really set the atmosphere for the gothic horror tone of the campaign.
The idea I’m playing around with is using candlelight but I’m coming up against the barrier of not having any candles or candelabras. Easily ordered from Amazon, but I’m hesitant to throw cash at something that could be a complete disaster. We play across an 8’x4′ table so I’ll probably need a few to light the whole thing.
So I’m wondering has anyone tried anything like this before and, if so, how did it go? Am I looking at a moody atmosphere that will give my players chills? Or just give them all eye strain and possibly lead to a character sheet fire?
Cheers.
We used candle light from time to time.
My favorite time to use it was for the Halloween weekend game every year. My group started with one offs for Halloween but later drifted towards including it in the general campaign.
As the DM of a game using candles I would urge you to have a very small handy flashlight so you can read your notes or find info in books easier. The small book reader clip-on lamps very handy.
