SG 13

As Gerry mentioned in the Community Awards , I had mentioned that something in the fuure I had planned to do SG13.

How far in future rather depended on Wargames Atlantic release of the Agents which had the requesit P90’s . As it happened I managed to get a set just before xmas.

Now I had been in a painting/hobby pre Xmas rut, and decided to get myself out of it, decided to play around with Wargames Atlantic  Operators/Agents and Civilians ( (I stiil.have to get the female Civilians) and see what I could make from Various frames.

Anyway I built 5 members of SG13 , why 13 other than I’m playing with the Dice God’s?

Although 13 had appeared occasionally  in a couple of episodes , I chose it that in when it featured front on the 2 part episodes Heroes, the episodes were Dr Janet Fraser was killed, and at the time was led by Col David Dixon, played by one of my Favourite actors Adam Baldwin.

SG 13

So I used this as the basis for my fictional team.

At the time of the episode it consisted of :

  1. Col David Dixon
  2. Dr Cameron Balinsky
  3. Senior Airman Jake Bosworth
  4. Senior Airman Simon Wells.

For plot device/ available actors etc , team personnel changed , so I added a 5th Female figure ( nice add in  WA Agents box set  , allowing for the addition of the female  Lt Jennifer Hailey .

The figures didn’t prove too much of a problem using bits from all 3 kits I produced 3 figures with P90’s, one with a SAW, and one with Shotgun ( unfortunately not a SPAS 12)

Painting was fairly easy, as the airforce SG teams generally didn’t wear cammo, so for the base uniform I went for my tried and Trusted Army Painter Speedpaint Forest Sprite., Boots were done in  GW contrast Wyldwood. There Flak vests I  the show are not far of Black, so went for a mix of Speed Paints Absolution Green and Grim Black. Wpns were done with GW Basilicum Grey for the plastic and Speedpai t Enchanted Steel for the Metallics

All was then given the usual thinned out Agrax Earthshade wash.

Now you maybe wondering g how I’m planning g to semi integrate Black Sun and Forgotten Ruins together. The Former is an Alien World, and u it’s stumble across interdimensional Rifts and in the latter a temporal gate is opened from our own World a few years hence to one 10,000 years in future( not intentionally of Course).

My link and change involves Stargates, so that I can also include one of my Favourite TV shows.

So;

As in Black Suns, two races inhabited earth 100,000 years ago the Lemurians a non human Dinosaur evolved race, and the 1st Human evolved race the Atlanteans  , better known now  as the Ancients  although originally called Alterians, from the original Galaxy were they evolved.

The Ancients were refugees escaping the religious zealots who had come to dominate their  civilisation back in their home Galaxy , re-settling  on Earth,  existing peacefully with the Lemurians , who allowed them to set up their own city and civilisation away from rigid practices parent race.

Both races had interstellar travel but used different technology and methods  to achieve it. The Lemurians preferred temporary interdimensional Rifts and the Ancients used their more permanent Stargates  System having  seeded much of the habital.plamets in the Galaxy using  their huge automated  seeding ships.

Both races had found the Black Suns world , the Lemurians initially , where they had found the huge Jungle/Equatorial rain Forest which covered 1/3rd of the world’s Land surface . Although aware of the rest of the planet, they had confined themselves to this area to avoid the various hostile primitive races they had discovered in the northern hemisphere, using their advance technology  to look like magic to frighten and awe away t races from entering their colony.

It was sometime later that the Ancients explored the planet when their seedship left a gate in  the more temperate northern hemispheres.  No attempt was made to.leave a colony , partly due to the Lemurians presence but also to not interfere in the development of what they found to be numerous primitive hostile races. These initial contacts were so violent that it left a lasting g effect  on  the Anciient pyche that they became part of  their myth and legend .

10,000 years ago  thecl ancients re located their civilisation to the Pegasus Galaxy to escape the galactic plague effecting humanoid life  as as with thrvthe tales of Vampires derived from their contact with the wraith  this mythology became part of stories when they integrated with the newer 2nd Human civilisations back in the Milky Way .

Unfortunately when they returned they found little evidence to explain the fate of their sister civilisation the Lumarians , barely remembering them over the thousands of years they were away.

Throughout the 20th century various Incursions from Earth via the accidental openings of the Lemurian Potrals, led to the belief during the 40′ to the 60’s that the world was totally Jungle , particularly as most of the crossovers were Ltd to survival in what was ongoing wars.

The northern hemispheres more temperate zone were only discovered when the Americans using the Giza and Antarctic Stargates , via there Cheyanne mountain complex during the 1990,’s and later by the British in the 2010, when a 3rd gate was discovered under Glastonbury,  by a helper to UNIT only known as the Doctor.

That should cover  it allowing me to develop a narrative li king both games but also allowing for other things to pop up( says he with around 50 to 60 Dale’s models of the Kids magazine which are Aldi type Daleks)

I also have a 3rd Doctor and Brigadier somewhere painted.

A couple of weeks ago on the Weekender, Ben and Co highlighted a new set of figures from Spectre Minatures, in the Form of Task Force Survivors.

Task Force Survivors

And I thought, these look like they are carrying everything including kitchen sink , and to me looked like a modern take on your Dungeon exploring troop, particularly the guy with the Auto Shotgun . I did try a vary the cammo patterns amongst them, but not sure anyone will notice.

Despite the obvious disparity in wpns between the protagonists wpns , the Ulta Modern side needs heavy wpns to deal with some of the Bigger threats, such as Giants, Ogres and Trolls, as the standard.5.56 mm bullet just hasn’t got the stopping power, luckily Empress Minatures supplies a nice range of these.

To round out my Ultra Modern British I painted up some Empress Minatures Vehicles in the Form of a Wartior IFV, for obvious troop transport.

Forgotten Ruins 4 Armour.

And a Scimitat Light Tank/Recon Vehicle.

Forgotten Ruins 4 Armour.

I decided to go for Northern Europe Cammo rather than desert, as had gone for Temperate bases for Infantry.  The novels are initially set somewhere in Normandy 10,000 years in future. This works for what will be my own world, which will be another zone on the Black Suns planet, hence the different weird and wonderful found.

I did try a different company rattle can for the Base Colour  for these vehicles , as have been trying out the Colour Forge Range , in this case their Death Rattle Green.

Forgotten Ruins 4 Armour.

You get more paint for your bucks/pounds and it gives a good coverage.

I again went for a diluted GW Agax Earfhshade wash.

As usual I dry brushed Army Painter Army and Cammo Green to tidy it up before putting the cammo pattern on using GW Basilicum Grey Contrast.

It was the weather again with lightened  Army Painter Green before adding decals.

The Decals were mainly extras from the Rubicon,s Centurion kits.

Once these has set, I did the usual neat agreax Earthshde weathering on tracks and lower Hull, finishing off with a light Sand Dry Brush.

With the Vehicles done I had also got some Dismounted vehicle crew from Empress and these were suitably painted.

Star Spawn One for Ben

Now I will upfront apologise for not being able to describe the painting of the figure part of this model as:

I had brought this on Impulse, as had Kevin and Jo from our group on seeing  it on the Friday at Games Expo. As usual we held off buying straight away, and having forgot where the stand was , Kevin brought them on  the Sunday from.

https://xwcminiatures.com/pages/miniatures.

I had no idea at the time what I was going g to use it for, but knew I would eventually.  Any way it was ideal for Black Sun, and has sat by the side of hobby table since the end of August

( having been built as I kept knocking it on floor , and having  to find the bits!)

I had a paint scheme in mind based on;

Star Spawn One for Ben

So I tried various Speed and Contrast paints , with lighter drybrushing, but couldn’t get it right. In between it would sit on side table whilst I thought about it again.

Eventually I tried a white light dry brush and it worked and I had base colour. But I didn’t want wings to be same colour, as it would be too green. I had originally thought about doing whole model Blue but decided against it goong  would work for just the  wings going provisionally matching a  light fading night sky.  Again  I had the  same problem and it didn’t look right till you guessed it, light white dry brush.

Afterwards it was a little experimenting with the boney bits claws etc  but figure was finished.

Then how to base it. I originally was going to be clichéd and put it standing over a mountain of skulls but Kevin pointed out that would scale it, and I wanted it for multiple games. So base was painted black and it sat at side of hobby table fo a few more weeks.

Anyway I looked at it and thought about it’s name StarSpawn  and looking at black base thought Space (the f…..you know the rest)

So paint a star spotted base, but would it look odd on a Vietnam Jungle, then thought,  how if its crossing from the void into our reality across dimensions!

So using a bit of textured paint, did a roughly semi circle for a blazing sun with a firey corona ( I slipped with brush putting down textured paint) and then did a roughly linear strip of textured paint for the Jungle for our dimension with a white line for the crossover. Both the Sun and Jungle painted with appropriate speed paints.

I had wanted to convey it shattering the barrier between dimensions,  but how to do it, till I found some old orange clear plastic card.. which shattered appropriately when being cut and voila!

For Varnishing I generally went for AK’s ultra Matt, but used gloss on Sun tentacles and edge of claws. I did a light dry brush of gloss over all to give model a slight sheen.

Having done a Marine tank I finally got to do my 2st squad of Rubicon’s U.S.M.C. which are some of the nicest figures in range. Mostly done using techniques used on previous figures. Only difference was they had flak jackets  and on looking at photos of Marines in Nam, they seemed to come in various shades of green  so plumped for the old staple GW Contrast Gutrippa Flesh, for a lighter contrasting colour.

Then it was the SAS, a set of figures that I wanted to do a lot earlier but dropped off schedule.

I originally thought they would be completely glad in Tiger stripe Cammo but was suprised to find it was a mirror subtle Cammo similar to 1950’s British Paras, and they wore a similar smock.

As I was playing with a different set of colours  and wasn’t sure how it would go  did it on 1st batch of figures just on the bits of smock that showed under all the Kit.

Unlike the British for Forgotten Ruins,  I only used colours, the base light Green, the usual Wraithbone  dabs then a Brown with GW Skeleton Horde ( as was very light looking on the Osprey picture, with Forest Sprite .

Happy with the subtle effect I used it on both jackets and trousers on next batch of Six.

In addition I decided to try Cammo face paint, partially as I had been Impresed with how Speedpaints Forrst Sprite had worked on the Ork faces earlier.

I then just put a couple bands of Militarum Green GW contrast, finding it easier to do than standard faces

For the Eagle eyed, yes the Beret is Cammo’d as well.
