Flames Of War 4th Edition Boot Camp: Day Three
Campaign Mega Game - Turn #8 Round Up: The Germans Win El Alamein!
And so we come to the end of the Mega Game...and the end of the Flames Of War 4th Edition Boot Camp.
The Germans have rerouted history and changed things in their favour. Now the Germans might be able to delay future endeavours by the Allies and stop their plans.
It's now up to you gamers to find out what happened next. If you play out some games following on from this we'd love to hear from you.
Thank you for watching and following along!

Grats to the DAK! Great game everyone.
More battles? Awesome!!!
Great game, looks like it was loads of fun. Great campaign too really helped make come to life for me.
Gratz to DAK
Thank you to Beast of War and Battlefront for setting up and sharing this event with the world. It’s been fun to be a part of remotely. I hope to see more events like this and will be frequenting Beast of War much more in the future.
Looks like it was a lot of fun. Maybe one day i’ll be able to make that trip, but this is the next best thing.
Awesome! But what’s with the bald weather man????? Great job you guys. Definitely on my bucket list to make it to one of your Boot Camps.
The dice gods shinned favorably on the Germans in the end.
So Rommel pulled it off
Sounds painful…
Very nice game.
THX for the weekend
film john vs justin! lets see the rumble!
The campaign added a great deal of background. Loved the whole event. Really looking forward to more full battles and content next week.
Well done as always. I appreciate all the support your group has given to this hobby.
Thank you.
And so another boot camp concluded.. Well done to all involved another fantastic weekend of content. Looking forward to the future flames content I’ve missed flames of war FTW last year.. Hopefully another season is on the way..
Safe journey home everyone
Grats to the DAK players and the BoW team for a really interesting weekend.
Looking foward to more FoW content.
Yup, a boot camp is on my bucket list too. Talk about a close game. I guess Jim held out after all. It wasn’t looking so good from this side of things!
I held out until the end of Turn 8, when the game was officially called. Then we went on to “Free Gaming.” Well, for those of us still on the table, the choice was clear. They may not be still keeping score but we still wanted to finish the battle to the bitter finish! I was finally destroyed by a combined drive of @bothi and @johnlyons ‘ tanks on Turn 12, with the game finally coming to an end on Turn 13. I think Mark’s tanks were the last Germans to finally be destroyed on the table just south of mine, leaving a handful of British survivors.
So if you go by who won per table (there were six tables in all, remember) – the game was a tie. The Germans won on three tables, and the British won on three tables.
If you go by who had the last tanks ion the board – the British won.
If you go by the actual victory conditions as stipulated at the beginning of the game, the Germans win by +12 victory point margin.
I am very impressed with everything I saw this weekend. The game looks like they went in the right direction. The plastic model kits all seem to be top notch. The kits are easy to put together and paint, but they also offer enough detail for you to back to work on them and make an incredible army out of them. The campaign and mega battle were both brilliant ideas for the boot camp and I hope to see more of them in the future
The campaign combined with the massive final battle really added to the interest. Of course this could be taken further – oriskany mentioned the impact of logistics, repairs, battlefield engineering, recon, airsupport and so on so the concept can be taken a very long way further along for those with the time and enthusiasm (and plenty of table space) 🙂
Absolutely, @dorthonion – as far as campaign games go, this campaign game was a starting point, nothing more.
Thank you for all the great content you guys have put out during the weekend, really learned a lot.
Hope alle of you had a great bootcamp, I certenly had at blast following you on the site.
Damn – at least James won’t have to make ‘that’ trip to Berlin to explain himself!
Nope, my formation commander tank was bailed out and failed its remount check (finally) and my last tank (I only had two at that point) left the field per the formation morale rules. So by piling onto the engine deck, we were able to get our survivors and wounded out of there. Fight another day!
It’s been a brilliant event to follow, must have been awesome to be a part of. Thank you.
Missing the boot camp already!
History made! I’m so pumped for v4 right now.
Thanks for all the content beasts of war it’s been great
Coolz
Im glad we will see more of oriskaney
More Oriskaney is certainly no bad thing. I’d like to see some more of his articles again as well.
Well played afrika korps I was routing for you from the start
That was a hooot! Great game.
Congrats to everybody. It looked like a lot of fun.
so after such a serious test, thumbs up or down to the rule changes?
I only have one tiny suggestion about the Grants (move the +1 penalty to hit from the 37mm to the 75mm to reflect its awkward positioning in a sponson close to the ground) – other than that I’d say the system was damned near perfect.
Great weekend. Does this mean we will get another series of FOW FTW? Lets hope so.
The campaign map has really added purpose to the whole weekend
Glad you liked it, @huscarle
Great boot camp. Great game. I can’t wait to receive my version 4 copies
This was one of the BEST boot camps to date. I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT!
The FSSB goes to Africa instead of Italy
Just got caught up and it’s finished. Some awesome battles and the new rules seem way more fluid than when I played a few games a few years ago.
Great boards – they just seem to get better with each BC. Fan-foogu-tastic work BoW!
Once again the almost mythical @oriskany pops by for a game. It’s not that far to BoW from your house, is it? Stunning work, as always, but it has been a pure tonic for me to read and follow yesterday and today. Thanks for keeping things going. Semper Fi.
Heading back to hospital now, but I might get to join in next week. Safe flight back – hope you have a green card ready when you get to customs!
BoW rules. D.xxx
I think the best part of the boot camp weekend was when I heard you were on the mend, @unclejimmy . Take it easy and finish getting well! 😀
New to watching the boot camps and I am so glad I did. Seriously considering attending one in the future.
That was truly a nail-biter. Great job guys! It was a phenomenal experience to follow!
This was a great boot camp. The addition of the campaign map was very valuable and made the weekend that much more enjoyable, and you found a way to outdo yourself by doing a multiplayer battle at the end. Well done guys. Warren, may I ask once more about the FOWFTW with Dr. Dave; is there any intent to do a 4th Ed series?
Hope everyone had a great time there and that we can see more battle reports soon(TM)
Nooooooooooo it should have been the British!!! Great game everyone!! Still astounded by the boards
Another successful boot camp
YES DAK!
Well done all!
this was so cool I wish I had a bigger group of flames of war players to do something like this with but all in all that was really cool especially since the side I would play on won 🙂
We’ll that went down to the wire , great coverage as always.well that’s another game for the shopping list.
What a way for the sands to settle, little gutted the desert rats couldn’t pull it off but great stuff guys it’s been a blast.
Now DAK gets to fight Patton in Libya rather than Tunisia. 😉 Great job all, that was really enjoyable to watch.
Looking forward to more FOW for the next week!
Congrats to the DAK and man @oriskany that campaign seemed like a blast!
It really was a lot of fun, @ghostbear – A lot of work, especially when executed in conjunction with table top games . . . but a lot of fun.
We clearly need a third battle for El Alamein! Get to it guys!
Thanks for doing this. Good way to launch the new rule set
I love these short videos. Congratulations Germans. Brits, hold your heads up, always tomorrow.
Like I said, I still think they won the campaign overall. According to Michael and Igor’s rules for the mega game, they just lost the big battle at the end. But campaign wise, the big British lead in the beginning was probably enough to pull them through.
Interesting to think that with Torch going off, would the Germans holding the East would they have been able to hold the center with reinforcements to hammer the Americans that came into the war so raw. Would this have saved the Italians from a complete drubbing and would that mass been enough to slow the Americans and break the moral with even larger losses than they suffered in reality?
The last “big crush” in North Africa might have come at Tripoli instead of Bizerte in Tunisia. Or it may have still been in Tunisia (for naval and supply reasons) but just lasted longer.
That looked like a fun weekend
great bootcamp
Dang, what happened to the commonwealth!! Time for a cuppa!
What a great weekend.
An awesome way to play a game
Well done to Jim and co for all of the hard work they have put in to make the bootcamp so great
😀
Thank you so much for presenting yet another comprehensive weekend – and sharing it with us here at home!
Informative and entertaining for those playing and watching.
Excellent week end all round.
The Germans won? Just a temporary set back.
Amazing campaign!
like who oriskaney points out that the british commonwealth forces would have just kept on hitting the DAK. it would be very interesting to see a series where supply and losses were accounted for in a campaign! make it so james!
Really loved the coverage guys, great weekend.
I can’t wait until next week when V4 is released to the American continent. It was very nice to see this preview. Thanks to Beast of War for all the hard work putting it together and to Battlefront for their sportiveness.
Congratulations to all and a Field promotion is well in order to Jim (and a few sneaky pints). Gutted i didn’t get my hands on a ticket but there will be a next time….? Great coverage and i enjoyed watching everything unfold over the weekend.
Thank you, sir!
Great game and big hurrah for the DAK.
Great work Oriskaney, loved it
Thank you, @dmgdmind .
been a great bootcamp
my flaber has never been so gasted shocker great weekend everyone.
ah damn the DAK won. looked epic though!
Love me some alternate history. Even a small change could lead to a completely different war. Can’t play IRL (for now) but using TableTop sim I may do a campaign of a specific division going through the entire war and how the results affect the larger picture.
Great to know there will be more content coming from FoW and especially oriskany.
Thank you, @m30wm1x !
Watching this weekend has been the best advertising a game could ask for.
@oriskany @warzan thanks for the weekends entertainment a big thank you to all concerned. I have thoroughly enjoyed it.
Indeed, @warzan and the rest of the BoW team deserve way more credit than I do on the success of this boot camp. I just helped out. They did all the hard work, especially considering the obstacles they were up against during the last week of prep.
noooooo.
Best bootcamp ever, or at least that I’ve seen. Would have been happy just to have been there to watch. Oriskany is super cool. I’m glad you have him there for a few more days, pick his brain man I love hearing him talk history! Great job guys.
Thanks , @coachjose59 !
The Center Held! That had to be a bit of a nail bitter at the endish, since it seems that the Germans really racked up the points.
Tactical patients pays off
Congrats to the German players!
Love the look of the map
Way to go DAK
Congrats to all the player
The DAK players change history. Congratulations! Looking foreword to some more FOW content.
Look like a lot of fun.
Looked even, stupid brain working faster than the hands.
That was brilliant. I don’t know how you could manage it next time, but would be great to get like a time lapse if the table tops of each battle.
Great Campaign, Great job Jim.
Thanks, @andrewvonz
Boot camp is now over, hopefully I will be able to attend one in the future as everyone is so friendly and games always look awesome.
I have always said, it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s the taking part and having fun is the most important!
Noooooo! Clearly the Germans are just broken 😉
Good work Beast of War team that was very entertaining time for some R&R.
Grats dak army on your hard work
Great stuff, history changed! Really enjoyed following the campaign
Thanks to all those from BoW for organizing this boot camp and all those who attended. I hope you all had a truly great time as you made the event very exciting to watch from the sidelines.
A special thank you to @oriskany as your simple campaign took this boot camp to a whole new level. Watching the battles translate to movements on the map made it that much more exciting for those of us watching it all unfold from the sidelines. An amazing touch to an event like this.
Thanks very much, jamesevans140 – I just hope people can see that a campaign game is really quite simple, when all you’re doing is trying to string together some narrative between your tactical tabletop games.
Wins and Losses tracked in a column work just as well . . . except with a map all those “W”s and “L”s have a spatial relationship with each other, plotted on a map. So long as your “referee” is knowledgeable in the base material and fair, and your players are friendly and not over-competitive, the overall narrative happens almost automatically.
History changed! But in the end with the Allies landing in their rear Germans would have to retreat in the end.
Yeah hail Jim! More of his stuff in articles and wwii games!
Nice to see some gals in the hobby to!
Totally agree, especially on gals in the hobby! My girlfriend @gladesrunner would soon face @tanya in a battle of Giant Killer Robots in free gaming Sunday! 😀
What an great endeavor. Very cool to watch it all. Great work.
A new Flames of war FTW series?!
Great game guys, so close most of the game. Thanks again James for a great campaign
Jerry won, Nooooooooooooooo
Looks like loads of fun, I would like to give FOW a try and brake out of my 28mm comfort bubble.
James, once more into the breach old man.
A lovely ending to a lovely weekend.
Thanks for all the fun…
If I’ve said this once, May the dice gods be, ever in your favour.
and of course a large round of applause from all of us to all of the Beasts of War for putting on another great and enjoyable show, from the ones who could not be there.
Enjoy your victory drinks…
*pant, pant*
I f***in’ made it. I made it!
😀
This is what I predicted once they said the British had moved in quickly but suffered casualties as a result. Of course it could easily have gone either way. There was a lot of the best kind of tension watching this progress.
Great job to everyone who organised this, put it together, and made it available for those of us online!
Yeah!
The Desert Fox pulled through. El Alamein fell. Monty was jut a bit too cocky I guess. Was great to follow along with the bootcamp though admittedly several days behind. Darn real life. The BoW for all the hard work.
Well done everyone – looks like a brilliant time was had by all!
It occurs to me that my comments in the above video are a little misleading. Yes, the Germans won (badly won) the last big mega game, and so largely halted this part of Operation Supercharge in our campaign. However, for those who have been following, the huge British lead built up during the early turns managed to carry them through.
After the boot camp I did the math and presented the final results, but this was in a “green room” thread for backstagers only. For those interested, the full results of the BoW Boot Camp El Alamein campaign are posted in the images linked below:
Campaign Turn 01:

Campaign Turn 02:

Campaign Turn 03:

Campaign Turn 04:

Campaign Turn 05:

FINAL RESULTS: British 18.5 – Germans 16.5. Even after the big German win in the final mega-game, the campaign comes down to a naaaarrow British victory.
