About the Project

Finally getting around to painting the opponents for my Japanese army. I have the WG plastics box an additional sprue from a Warlord sprue sale a while back, an Amtrac Buffalo amphibious transport and a MMG weapons team. Inspired by others painting these I was sure I could do a passable job of my own, but found I immediately need to do more research and check my colours choices. I enjoyed The Pacific TV series and that seems a fitting backdrop for some painting.

Jack The Knife - Squad 1

Happy with this guy. Didn’t go the extra mile with eyes this time. With the squint it seems a little unimportant. The helmet beneath the netting is Vallejo Brown Violet green. But the photos don’t show a lot of difference between that and the uniform Deathguard Green. I think the Athonian Camoshade being used as the wash for both areas caused that, but in person it does look slightly more obvious.

The team is coming together. Only two crouching riflemen to go and the team will be ready. Took a team shot so far, minus the prone BAR guys that are tucked away in the toolbox storage I intend to keep this army in.

It was an interesting pose in the end. I wanted to use this carbine arm with the pouch strapped to the stock of the rifle, but wasn’t sure what right arm to use. I chose a hand set to pull a trigger, but pushed down into his lap and with his  his shoulders set so far forward it just looks like he’s committing to a huge yell to get someone’s attention. I only realised that there are no webbing straps on this mini once the backpack was on and the glue was dry. Seeing as I am not playing people that will cry about such things I painted a couple of straps as a nod to a correction, but wasn’t going to muck about with slivers of greenstuff etc.

School boy error. Bayonet on the pack and the hip. Another body with no webbing but I put in a back pack. I was just trying out bits from the sprue and got careless. I will try to be more accurate with my builds on the next squad.

Fixed bayonets. Squad 2

Started building and painting squad 2 in earnest. As in my initial list idea, I have mostly fixed bayonet minis with the maximum shotguns I can take. Earlier in the project I painted my NCO and one shotgun guy. The NCO is prone, so it would probably help if I have at least one crouching mini to stick next to him so he doesn’t look so out of place.

The strap on the shotgun bandolier is just a snipped off rifle sling. In reality this is a canvas strap apparently and I painted it the same colour as the other webbing to imitate that.

I liked giving one rifleman a black eye and a broken nose with some Drukhi Violet wash and Blood for the Blood God dabs.

Should the Marine with a concussion and an eye injury, surely impacting on his depth perception at the very least, be given the keys to the grenade box? When we roll some dice I will let you know. ?Should the Marine with a concussion and an eye injury, surely impacting on his depth perception at the very least, be given the keys to the grenade box? Should I finish Squad 2? Yes, of course.

Would that keep me on better track and limit any confusion? Incontrovertibly.

Did I plough on and start painting what was fun and appealed to me most at the time instead of following a logical plan any way? Indubitably I must have.

I have worked out at the tail end of this project that I don’t even have one man spare to complete the list I am working towards, so I needed to use one last prone guy. Rather than adding another prone guy to my machete and shotgun toting hard men, I added him to my grenade toting Squad 3. I used the bandaged eye head again, but to mix it up I added a spare helmet on top. It isn’t sitting quite low enough on his head, but the bandages account for a bit of that.I should probably have added the SMG ammo webbing to this guy, but I figure this guy is already having a bad day with his injury and seemingly lost his water bottle too, so why trouble myself with too much reality and just add it to the list of mishaps befalling this poor wounded soldier. He will be the only man in my army with a grease gun so at least he has that coolness going for him.
