Day 23 - Blue team push
With most of the foundation work completed yesterday for the group, I went in with a pure vallejo heavy blue-grey to edge highlight or to volume highlight depending on the shape. A final pinnacle highlight was added sparingly with thinned down P3 morrow white.
Tanks and chemical tubes were picked out with scale75 surfer orc flesh , armour sections were black-lined with thinned citadel contrast black legion. The feet, bones/claws/horns, and straps were painted with P3 Thornwood Green followed by Gun Corps Brown. Eye sickest were blacked out before the eyes were painted P3 morrow white. They were then finished with scale75 Ophiuchus green. Tubes and pipes were picked out with secret weapon tyre black. Red and pink sections were painted with Citadel contrast flesh tearer, vallejo purple, and scale75 sagittarius fuschia accordingly.
Finally base elements were painted in around the model using my normal workup, but the legs and body positions made it difficult to get some good coverage. Touch ups may be needed at a later date.
That’s it for now, blues are done and it’s into the other groups next.
Day 24 - Thresh Metal
Friday night and Thresherlord is on the desk. A single character in the faction he is a bit of a bad ass having both decent close and ranged attack stats.
I went similar to the art card for my paint, going for a two-tone affair but leant more towards purple than dark blue. The base coat was Citadel contrast Shish purple + Leviadon blue applied over the black and white lateral prime.
From here all of the details and armour were blocked in with vallejo black before being worked up the same as the Blue group.
Armour got the titanium workup, and the straps had the P3 brown one.
The car was painted with Citadel flesh tearer red as a basecoat, and then edge highlighted with P3 frostbite. Frostbite was also used to wet blend highlights into the main body when a second coat of contrast was applied.
The car was then glazed over with several coats of Vallejo transparent red to give it a nice saturation level.
Day 25 - Green Day
Long day of painting today, got the green group “finished” while binging Breaking Bad.
To start with all 3 got a Citadel Dark Angel green contrast basecoat.
Highlights were then stippled in with some P3 Morrow white over muscle structures, fins, and facial details.
Each model then had a second layer of contrast applied which had some more P3 morrow white wet blended in to reinforce highlights. I went with 3 different types of green here; Dark angel green + Apothecary white contrast paints mixed for Gorger, dark angel green + apothecary white + Imperial fist yellow for Saur, and dark angel green + apothecary white + a drop of Aethermatic blue for Ripper.
Finally I painted up the remaining details to bring the group up to a 90% completion point which is more than enough for today. Still not happy with the feet bone.
Day 26 - 2-4-1
Turquoise Group was on the painting table today…..
Turquoise Group didn’t take as long as I thought to paint up, so went and tried out something on Maw as well and ended up finishing both ? gotta love weekend painting when you get in the zone.
Turquoise was a mix of Citadel akhelian green + Terradon turquoise + apothecary white.
Maw was a bit of an oily color made from Citadel black legion + Akhelian Green + white ink, heavily thinned out with contrast medium. I really like this colour so will perhaps use it elsewhere, maybe on RSN dinos in the future.
Tentacles were painted up with Citadel contrast volupus pink that had wet blended in highlights added, and more contrast glazed into the transition with the main body colour.
Both Maw and the 3 Turquoise Kaiju warriors where then brought up to 90% the same as the others.
Only Overlords left to go and then I can go back and tidy up some details.
But couldn’t resist getting a group shot of all the warriors that I’ve hammered out these last few days. It’s been a big push but I’m happy with the results so far.
Day 27 - floating broccoli brains
The penultimate day of the pain ting challenge and 3 models left to paint.
Fortunately I’ve got a full wet palette of my paint mixes still workable, and after the big push over the last week my methods and excessive use of the hairdryer should help me with some good progress.
The Overlords are mostly 3 sections; the brains, the tentacles, the body.
Most overlords I’ve seen have gone with a human style pink brain and green tentacles, but I decided to mix things up and go with pink tentacles (courtesy of citadel contrast volupus pink) and green brains à la Mars ack ack ackack ack Attacks were basecoated with P3 Necrotite green.
The body was blocked in with vallejo black and then my titanium base.
Day 28 - final push
Last day, and the Brian’s need to be finished. Fortunately the bases are already done as they were completed them when I batch painted the Atlantican bases (seems like ages ago).
The squidgy green brains were first washed over with Citadel akhelian green + Imperial fist (the same mix Saur had), then the main sausage-like bits were given a light coating of P3 morrow white to loft them before they were highlighted with P3 wurm green.
The tentacles had vallejo purple and scale75 sagittarius fuschia layered on, with more volupus pink over the suckers on the underside.
The bodies were then highlighted up through the titanium layers with some quick and drift NMM volume painting up to or morrow white.
Details like the eyes and gems were picked out, and the pipes were painted with P3 greatcoat grey.
Final step was to Black 3.0 some brass rod stands that were attached to the bases and the brains then glued on the top.
Done.
Challenge Completed - the parting shots
38 models in 28 days.
Its not the most I’ve done for a painting challenge, but I did have a lot of personal things going on this month which really pushed my free time. I was still able to get a decent amount of painting time in each day (most days were several hours), and I’m happy with the results, so what follows is a final gallery of the completed minis.
