FoW 4th Edition Demo Game - Learning The Rules!

We stop in with Mike and Igor and learn the basics of Flames Of War with them over a couple of turns. You'll get to know the basics of moving, shooting and more as they battle it out with the British and German forces that the Boot Campers will be playing with.

With that in mind watch out to see how the games play out across the day and we'll be back soon.

eddie117

Love the layout of the mat

eddie117

Can’t wait for the John vs Justin game

eddie117

Looks like I’ve got into flames of war at a good time

eddie117

Ooh im tempted to star an afrika korps army

eddie117

Start*

pojoh

Nice reference video.

ludovic

Too bad there is no infantry

stiltman

Kinda missing infantry, but it will be fun to watch this!

darren2961

yes i agree seeing how infantry interact in the game would be nice to see ,has the rules for them especially close combat were not the easiest to follow in previous editions of the game

irontom

I’ll have to watch this later. Looking forward to the 1 hr game video.

mo3355

So are infantry being toned down now? Or just keeping it simple to learn? I have alot of people around me do not play FOW cause they state its just tanks. People laughed at a buddy of mine cause he had infantry. I was hoping to change their minds

warzan

For this we are just keeping it simple for the weekend.

However those that laughed about infrantry couldn’t Ben more wrong (even in the old game) I found them devastating at times especially when they really dug in – very hard obstical to deal with.

But you will always see tanks as they are the mainstay of the armies and a lot is built around supporting them 🙂

darren2961

glad to hear infantry are still a valid strong option however are the rules simple to follow what with assault then supporting fire then breakthrough plus perhaps more supporting fire it kinda got messy and hard to keep track off in previous editions of the game

mlaaper

In the games I have played, dug in infantry is hard to remove. Infantry that is out in the open with no cover. Is much easier to remove. The trick, which I have not learned is to be patient. Get your infantry in a good position and be patient. Moving infantry is very vulnerable. Which I struggled with. Ie. I have models, we are playing a war game and I need to move my models.

hauptmanncanuck

Agreed. Thank you

dorthonion

Fascinating to watch experienced players engaging – the smoke bombardment was a crafty move and of course anything daft enough to expose itself to an 88 is just a fatality in the making.
Now, we want to see how this battle ends! 🙂

daegren

Fast and easy to play.
Nice walk through.

thunderwarp

Interesting.

cbrenner

Great video. Nice demo of the rules.

neves1789

Looking great!

m30wm1x

Very good rules demo. The overhead camera with picture-in-picture is a great way to watch as well.

caledor2

Good to see the game mechanics in action.

sircaroon15

I am keeping this video for latter today. Got to get cracking with family stuff…still early in Canada.

wireme61

Good demo. Could se a little infantry just as example of play. But for simplicity Tanks are the way to start. keep up the great work.

civilcourage

Learning the rules from watching people play is I think the best way (short of playing it yourself). It takes much less time and for me it just seems to stick better. I’m a very casual gamer though so probably wouldn’t work too well in a more competitive setting. Look forward to more of this with infantry and all the other gubbins fow v4 has to offer.

kneecapper

Great demo game guys, really learned alot.

troybuckle

I am glade you guys posted this as i was hoping to get a bit of a intro to the game play. It would be nice if you could go over one of the unit cards and point out the stats and what they mean,

dimdim

I still find the new game a bit off putting. Maybe my mind will change if I play it.

rasmus

I like the picture in picture used

banure

Great tutorial video. Best way to learn a new game is to play!

sonbae

Great vid!

ijontichy

It’s a great idea to streamline the rules! The game was quite hard to leArn from the get go.

tibour

looks similar to earlier editions,

trolleyjockey

Too me the elephant in the room is team yankee, it seems they have pretty much used the same system and added a world war two flavour. Nothing wrong with that as its a great game but I am having trouble so far deciding if I need the rule book for each game or if either main rulebook plus unit cards and army books all you need.

pschwag

This was a great idea to add this video in here as it sets up the basic game for the rest of the boot camp!

radegast6

so nice to see Igor Tshirt ! sędzia ! heheh another bootcamp another countryman !

panzertanker64

Looking good

t34master

Im loving 4 ed so far but anybody now anything about late war. Because I have a big Russian late war army that I think would be awesome in 4th ed

skillamac

Battlefront are producing 2 books to convert current Lw/Ew lists to v4 for free providing you have a copy of the v3 rules. These are being handed out either via your LGS or direct from Battlefront by sending in a pic of you and your v3 rules hth

kr4ig

Thanks for posting the demo game, very informative.

davidquinn77

YEAY now im happy, its demo time, time for more coffee

skillamac

Good demo game, I still need to read and play through the rules myself before I know how it’s going to translate late war.

The mid war army lists have drastically reduced the sizes of the infantry platoons in the lists previewed so far. I hope that they get added back in as the v4 books get more rounded out. Flames v3 was one of the few games where infantry and tanks could fight on the same table and it not feel like either was dominant.

I really need to play/read v4 now to see what has and hasn’t changed..

peter327

All we’ve seen so far are motor platoons and panzer grenadiers. These units were only one or two stands bigger in v3. Also with the rules change, they will not break more easily. I’m hoping that when true infantry units come out, they remains similar in size. Time will tell.

lawnor

I’m sure its a fun game but that was very dry and hard to pay attention to, but perhaps I’m not the right person for this game/video?

warwolf

Awesome! Was hoping to see some footage of gameplay. Like to see more videos of backers playing as well?

basilbrush

Added to watch list

caibre

Wow, this gameplay looks awesome! I really like the second camera cutaway.

cypher2009

I really want to start a midwar list…. or two….. or five. Loving the look of the new version.

battlehawk

Looks good, will take a little time to get used to the changes from V3, but looks like the majority of the mechanics are the same.

kristensen

Informative demo game

roboute73

Squeaky Door!!! Otherwise good video.

kenyon84

Great Video well worth the watch

goban

I love the picture in picture, but could you photograph from the same direction (or inverse the pic.) so that the guy on the left is always on the left. This is not too bad but the other time i saw you use it i found myself going cross-eyed.

By the way I am going to buy this game, sorry no free book as mine is v1 and the shop had no more when i went to change this.

You might go through the buying options, (rules, cards, required army / campaign books, starter box set, PAINT, etc.).

Keep up the good work.

zorg

great instructional video.

glitchingout

Looks to be a good intro. I would really like to see what place infantry has in this version.

irontom

Finally had the time to watch this video. Great walk through of how to play the game.

davidquinn77

Cool beans, great vid, the picture in picture is good, a few close cam’s would be cool as well

turbocooler

This was awesome especially the two cameras. Hope you guys do more of that. The only thing that I would change if could be done in post processing is sometimes the smaller camera should have been the larger view. There were some angles that were just hard to see what was going on otherwise this was great demo.

One other thing, please get some graphite for the door hinges so they no longer squeak when being opened — LOL!

Great job, wish I could be there but at least I was able to see most of it during my dinner break

cptsafety

Great intro to the game play! Thank you very much! One of them said at the beginning that terrain is not discussed in the rules. I’m guessing that it’s discussed in the rulebook, but maybe he was talking about tournament handouts or something? Thanks so much!

dags

This is what I have been looking for, anything about expanding to avg army size coming?

machinegod

Cool to get a rules playthru. Lets see part two!

wolf320f

Having sound trouble on iPad got to watch this again later

dammitprawn

Lovely looking table…….needs more

dammitprawn

Needs more CAMELS! That’s what I meant to say!

spartax10101

Great demo game, with plenty of advice for new players

phasestar

Great demo.

tmon

What no infantry? Otherwise good demo.

m30wm1x

I think a quick video with the guys going through a unit’s card and showing which values/rules are which could be good for those of us not there.

ethren

Nice intro to 4th ed.

inu53

I like the overhead cam although the walls and buildings in the middle on the left kept distracting me by looking a little like a space invader. Good video.

bear23

so awesome! love following this.

dugthefug1644

The rules look far more neat and tidy than previous Flames of War videos I have seen. The phases seem more defined with less special rule checks etc. That’s only my first impression from a limited knowledge of older versions.

dmgdmind

Loving the changes. Now if I could just get my friggin local group to stop focusing on 40k

helcarexe

Awesome demo game to figure out the basics of the game.

jamesevans140

Thanks Mike and Igor for putting V4 through its paces for us. I am truly impressed with the new movement rules. Finally we have maneuver in FoW rather than simple movement. One is offensive while the other is not. I was concerned at first about the one shooting gets to choose the stand or vehicle that takes the hit. As this normally turns it into armies of snipers but when the defender has a chance of switching the target it makes it more 50/50 which keeps it realistic.

My group of gamers would find the way you guys bunch your tanks up like soldiers hunkering down as unrealistic. It does lead me to ask the question that when the shooter and target are on the same level with a building offering concealment and you have the target tanks rubbing mud guards how are you able to target the second tank. You can’t see over the first tank and the first tank is most defiantly and solidly blocking your flat trajectory AT fire?

guillotine

I can’t help it, tanks deployed and moving right next to each other looks so silly. I wish the rules had something to prevent that.

hauptmanncanuck

I FRICKEN LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!!!!

warhammergrimace

Great demo…quite tempted to have a go at FoW

madgolem

The new rules seems to be very playable and very streamlined. I wonder how unit composition will work, especially on infantry. Are there still artillery spotters in the game?

fireblarney

Seems like an easy enough game to get into. Should be nice and quick to pick up.

lanrak

Excellent demo game.
Keeps the rules simple and the game play tactical, just how I like it!

andrewvonz

A great intro for V4, thanks you Mike and Igor.

houghtonheed

Very good video. Liked the smoke tactic. Don’t think I’ll be using too many crusaders.

coxjul

Feels a lot slicker than FoW3!

mikeyboy403

Nice demo, would have liked to see it played to its conclusion, though.

volkbane

Great coverage guys. Really looking forward to trying the new edition.

coachjose59

Looks easy to pick up with the streamlined rules.

panzerkaput

That is a very useful demo game

sercoffee

Creating large corridors is always iffy.

Personally I try to limit to one large corridor and a couple of shorter fire lanes.
I always hope it reduces camping to a minimum and increase the use of tactics.

spacewolflord

They are doing an okay job. It is clear that they are not as experienced as the BoW team.

wendren

Justion should do a ho dwn, grab your partner by the waist…….

cwen

What a cool battle. The difference between the two versions is quite subtle, but it makes very interesting game play and can result in a complete different play dynamic.

jamest123

Love the two camera work going on – makes it really easy to understand 🙂

duster

i like the 2 screens option, lets you see the big picture & the close up, nice!

anubis06

Glad to see a demo game being played

gideon7v20

This is a really informative demo. Actually watching the game being played and what is happening being explained is better than just reading a rule book. Great job.

kernbanks

Love this game great basics

longshotte

I like the simplicity of the game that keeps it moving along.

mbdeyes

I was really hoping there’d be some kind of demo. thanks!

ghent99

A bit slow of a start and I really wanted to see the cards being used more not just a reference to the item being on the card but show us how it works. More games to come I am sure.

nosbigdamus

Looks like a much easier game to play I have to say.
As my last game was back in 1st edition.
Shooting though destroyed tanks of your own unit, is a plus.

weversberg

Personally, I’m not one for video battlereports but this is a nice look into the the game will play and dat board

greaper

Cool

stingray075

Nice intro game. As a British player I make extensive use of smoke bombardments. I love that finally I can target an area of table and not a specific team. Concerned about the once per game though? Is that just for that unit or for all artillery? Also I didnt see anything about wind direction.

stingray075

And trust me. When I have gas everyone worries about wind directin lol.

jamest123

Awesome looking game
