Happy Candlelight Sunday
Happy Sunday!!
No, John is trying to paint At-Ats, your busy changing John’s work. LOL. I was waiting for someone to ring a bell…
“And in this corner with the light At-Ats Lloyd “The Shader”, and in this corner with his dark At-Ats Warren “The Imperial”.
My thought was John and Dave had that look of two kids stuck in a car with the Battling Bickersons.
Google has some great ideas for relationship councillors in your area. 🙂
Late comer to the AT-AT debate: In the video cuts the one one the left looks awesome. Lighter base color of the AT-AT is probably more movie-faithful, and easier to get contrast WITHIN the AT-AT. However, if you make them too light, they will offer no contrast against the board, which I assume will be mostly white with all that ice and snow. Then again, these will be so large that the second contrast question probably won’t matter,
Timed the ending just about perfe…
I think Tony Soprano got killed at the end of the episode…
Okay, THAT was funny.
“Do-o-on’t stop . . . be-lieeeeevin’ . . .” [CUT TO BLACK]
There was a fair few of those card packs available, I can’t remember the specific sets but they definitely existed!
As well as the Chaos deck I can remember 40K, Dwarves, and Goblins. There were probably more.
Still got two sets, a 40k one and one for epic.
Man o war had a set
Monsters
Warriors
I don’t know about the 40k sets but there were 4 for Warhammer. Chaos as shown here in red. Goblinoids in Green, Heroes in blue and Monsters and Demons in yellow. I remeber playing this on the school bus back in 89′-90′. After a while we had some many people playing we had to combine decks. The different decks even scaled Goblinoids being weakest, then heroes, chaos and finally monsters being the strongest. Everynody wanted the Balrog.
John’s look during the great AT-AT debate was something between “god help me they’re going to make me change it aren’t they” and “see…see…I told you guys (the viewers).” LOL!!
happy sunday 😀
Well, I like Lloyds AT ATs but I also like Warrens AT ATs. But which is best..?
There’s only one way to find out…
FIGHT!!
Hooking the cloth over the table sounds good. Something along the lines of big eyelets and bungie cords should do the trick.
Also…
As well as doing it when you say “Stompa.” Is John going to twitch whenever you say “AT AT” from now on..?
Lol
Well there was only 1 stompa, there’s 5 AT-AT so it will be interesting – can’t wait to see it all together at Salute!
Oh aye. I think it’s going to make for a very impressive and imposing site.. 🙂
Missing out on seeing this, this possibly being the last Salute and me never having been before. Means I’m even more upset that I can’t go this year like I wanted to. 🙁
Site..? Should be sight. Bloomin stupid phone.
This will be my first salute and It will be such a shame if it’s my last. Great final edit to the programme by the way.
Yeah they had a space marine deck as well
Did you really need to waste 15 minutes of this arguing? That is not what I subscribed for!
If you want to have a meaningful debate on the different approaches to painting the AT-AT’s you should do two and compare them.
If we were gonna get our passion on about one thing this year, it was gonna be the hoth AT-ATs – do not underestimate the power of the force 😉
Really? I thought the arguing was some of the most entertaining content, its like wargamming with Jeremy Kyle lol
lol – i’d hopped for more like American Chopper than Jeremy Kyle 🙂
Grow some beards and ill accept American Chopper 😉
I agree @jamjarst, not worth the money.
Loved the show.
Having watched the AT AT argument I have nothing but sympathy for Warren and Lloyds parents. How you must have suffered.
@warzan maybe try the Mat O War Green from Antenocitis Wokshop?
I think that will be our fallback. It’s not just as nice as the grass fabric, but basically indestructible!
If you do go for Mat of War go the extra and ask them to send it rolled. Its a bugger trying to iron them creases out.
As a side note yo can also get Mat o War from the Hobby Den in Co-Kildare
http://www.thehobbyden.com
The news on Salute came as part of a column in WSS on the issues facing the UK convention scene. Here are the relevant quotes –
“Even the monolith that is Salute in London is under threat; this will be the last one at the Excel Centre. Who knows if a suitable replacement will be found?”
“The current issue with the future of Salute is the cost of hiring London’s cavernous Excel Centre is becoming prohibitive.”
To reiterate what I said on the forum post; there is no evidence that the sky is falling in yet, just the possibility that a suitable venue may not be found.
There is a drawback to it primarily being a traders fair, if price goes up, less traders go (although I would personally be pretty disappointed if a trader pulled out – depending on the rise of course) less traders means less reason to attend.
Perhaps a rethink of the entire offering is needed, start to take it towards a GenCon type format.
Salute won’t be the same with out the trip in the DLR – full of wargamers and the marathon crowd, we always play the guess which one they are going to game
That is a great shame about Salute… Look forward to seeing your updates on this and of course notification that i’ve won $30 to spend on resin/plastic :o)
Have a fab day one and all
Man, Combat Cards. Now there’s a blast from the past. Pretty sure I had a set of their Space Marine cards once upon a time. That wonderful time when GW was making so many varied games – Trolls in the Pantry anyone?
Tweedle Dumb and Tweedle Dumber …… Ding Ding Round 2.
You missed the candles for valentines day by a few days
@warzan have you looked at http://www.terrainmat.com
That was a hilarious insight into John’s week! Poor man 🙂
Have you tried the FAT mats from Frontline Gaming. They are awesome. Might be worth a look for your tables for Boot Camp? Happy Sunday!
I lol’d at the end
i remember the cards, in fact I was working in a GW store at the time! Another good episode guys especially enjoyed the painting of AT ATs discussion. I love the passion that this hobby brings out in people.
FAITH does look interesting but is looking to barely reach its funding as of this morning… Love to see you guys do a discussion on the impact of Kickstarter both from the positive and the negative angles.
Have you considered a hello kitty style AT AT? Even the empire must have had an equality policy somewhere….plus would scare the crap out of any rebel forces.
I’m with Lloyd on the AT AT colour scheme. Keep them brighter. Else you will have people saying “Why are they so dark? It’s not the same as the movie”
I’ve got the Orcs and Goblins combat cards
FIGHT!!! come on lads take it outside.
LOL we do have an alley out the back, but it’s very tight, would be a rubbing belly’s season.
why not get woodland dpm material (camouflage) ? you can get it on a roll, its relatively cheap, and it makes a nice change from just green
Spent my free time yesterday and this morning catching up on WWX week. Darn it for missing out on the competitions! Today is my only chance then…
Any chance of WWX and infinity boot camps? I’d love to come and spend a weekend with you guys, sounds like a crack!
Sold all my cards a couple of months ago, must be a dozen packs, elves, dwarves, empire, loads of different packs.
Simple solution to the AT- AT debate? Just let John get on with what you’re (we’re) paying him for. This HR advice will cost you £30 – alternative payment schemes accepted 😉
Happy Sunday BOW.
Well the first Bootcamp is getting closer and I’m happy army painter is getting in on the act already got most of there stuff and there spray primers are really nice.
It would be a shame if salute was not able to go ahead next year its just a great chance to meet other clubs and vendors face to face. I’m really looking forward to going in April.
Painting At-AT’s? Why not just let John get on with it? 🙂
alternative mats for your tables.
http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/category/ReadyGrassVinylMat/page/2
woodland scenics are on vinyl & can be sprayed.
Probably a bit out there but would an “online only” salute work? Have a website where all the traders have a video showing their new stuff with links to their shops, links to tutorials for the games, and battle reports for the partisapation games with links to the rules? That way you spread the workload amongst all involved, the logistics are solved, and I guess the sellers could have deals? A lot of people can’t normally get to salute, but having a collective hub of all this info May be a solution?
I think that defeats the whole purpose of salute, whilst it is about traders it is also about gaming an trying new games etc. I would suggest what you are talking about already exists and that’s right here on BoW…:-)
Not grass mats, but what about mouse mat type – these are awesome: http://eustore.frontlinegaming.org/
Im not sure if these are of any use.
http://www.gaugemaster.com/item_details.asp?code=N00020&style=main&strType=OO&Mcode=Noch+00020
I dont know what they are backed with.
That one is backed on recycled paper I think and is an odd size to divide up into 4′ x 4′ tables
Very funny – felt for Dave and John
I think what John has done looks great. Warren and Lloyd need to leave it up to him, so that they won’t come to blows.. lol … Ah the joys of siblinghood.
I used to have the Dwarf citadel card set though I never played the game. I know there were several sets but they didn’t cover every army. The cards were based on the actual citadel model range at the time, which is why the models were so unique and possibly why Lloyd recognised them.
I know flocking is used in the motor industry for car interiors (e.g. http://www.theflockshop.co.uk/general_price_list.html).
Happy Sunday. I was going to post yesterday, but figured I would wait until today so as to get in on the drawing. This weeks WWX battle report was probably the best one I have seen in years. Informative, entertaining, and I wanted more. It has been a very long time since I thought that about a battle report. Good job guys.
On a separate note, poor John.
coffee and cake ready time for weekender
http://www.newmodellersshop.co.uk/scenic_mats.htm how about these for grass mats
They look paper based which will not wear well for layout out and packing up lots of times. They will need mounted.
Happy sunday.
15 minute argument over a paint job?? it would have been better to picture the painted At-At and Falcon during it so I at least had something to look at, didn’t need to watch you two argue (and snap shots are not the same). Just let John get on with it, he is the better painter for vehicles…
Happy Sunday. Highly entertaining ep.
I remember the citadel combat cards I had the Monster pack. From memory there was Chaos, Orc and goblins, dwarf and space war. Here are two links about the cards
http://realmofchaos80s.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/acceptable-in-80s-combat-cards.html?m=1
http://dave.monkeymartian.com/?p=356
The Discussion on painting the AT-AT’s was brilliant i just couldn’t stop watching John’s face the whole time he was hilarious hehe. As for the painting of them i would go a medium grey finish a sort of in between the two sides 🙂
i am looking forward to Salute it will be my first can’t wait. 🙂
Lloyd is absolutely right @warzan
Pants 😉
In regards to painting the AT ATs’ just let John paint them, and Warren and Lloyd stay out of it. I suspect if he’d been allowed to just get on with it, they’d be nearly finished by now. If I was him I’d have throttled the pair of them by now…
By the way I remember a pile of those mats in both green and desert colour dumped in the upstairs room above the GW shop in Sheffield, the one down on the Moor. They were dumped in a corner a whole pile of them going to waste. They’re probably still there not being used, try contacting the store and maybe you can get your hands on some.
So was the copy of Angel’s book actually a peace offering to John from Warren and Lloyd?
I hope they resolve the Salute situation, would be a shame if they couldn’t.
The Thunderbirds game is looking good, fantastic styling really does remind me of the old TV show.
TT with fear factor i remember those!!
the first bit of the show all i kept thinking was poor john what has he let himself in for
Happy Sunday. A morning spent listening, watching and cutting my fingers while building Mantic Skeletons. The Thunderbirds game looks rather cool, but it might be a case of waiting for retail. Thanks for the entertainment this morning.
Great show guys. So you had discussion on fifty shades of grey on a AT-AT 😉 any way great to hear more about the boot camps, and you plans for it.
amazing send off guys, loved it. I thought you guys would have gone for the easy kit ATAT, its the right scale for there miniature range and they have some nice scale snow speeders. ow and there cheap
But the toys are soooo cool 🙂
Boyhood dreams come true 🙂
Yesterday I gave a congrats to John and his appointment to the Bow team. Today I wish commiserate John and his appointment to the Bow team… 😛
Happy Sunday but it looks like my battery is gett
Lol
Great episode.
Cracking episode gents 🙂
I have some advice I would like to share with Warren and Lloyd about how to paint the AT-ATs and it’s something I actually learned at work. My current role is managing a small team of people producing aircraft simulations for the RAF, which may not sound relevant to painting AT-ATs but bear with me.
What I’ve found is that as a team leader, I get much better results out of my team when I only tell them what to do, rather than telling them how to do it. So my advice to Lloyd and Warren is not to worry about the steps involved in painting the AT-ATs, just agree what you think the end product should look like, communicate that to John and then let John get on with painting them. You’ve hired him because he’s an amazing model painter – let him work his magic in his own way and the results will be much better than if you try and hold his hand through it.
The debate on steps is a little more closely tied to a limitation in the available paints etc
So it’s more about discussing the way to get there and still have enough to do all of them, rather than the final result 🙂
End result will be fine either way, the debate is about time and available ‘stuff’ 🙂
In which case, I would suggest either of the following. Decide between yourself and Lloyd how you think you should proceed in terms of what resources (paints) you have and how they should be used. Perhaps just make a decision about who is the boss of that project or aspect of the project and the other takes a back seat and concentrates on something else (such as the table and scenery). Or, say to Jon, these are the resources (paints) we have, design us a colour scheme that will work all the AT-ATs we have without needing to buy more paints.
There’s nothing worse than starting a job and then being told to do it a different way by two different bosses.
I also found delegation to be the hardest skill to learn when I took on my first “managerial” role. I had a way I thought things should be done, personal standards I thought should be met when really all I needed to be concerned with was whether the end product was fit for purpose and completed on time. It’s really hard to let go, especially when it’s something you care passionately about.
Brilliant XLBS today chaps. watching John and Dave was during the ” debate ” was priceless. It reminded me about how me and my brother used to argue about games, with anyone trapped in between powerless to act one way or the other.
On an AT-AT note, the technique’s that John came up with provided cracking results, they will look great come Salute, cannot wait to see them on the table. 😀
My opinion would be to keep the paint chipping and weathering on the AT-ATs light, for several reasons.
1) these are not vehicles that have been on campaign for a long time. They were landed within the last 24 hours.
2) they are supposed to be something like 80 feet high, what is chipping their paint? They are not being hit by debris from the ground, and people are not climbing on them like the crew of a tank.
3) technically by stars wars cannon, i think their armor is ceramic or plasteel not normal metal.
4) in the star wars universe, the rebels always look cobbled together, rusted, beat-up and used. See the millennium falcon. The empire always looks clean, spotless, disposable. Almost like their stuff is brand new like its too bothersome to even use a walker or fighter more than once.
Very good points!
So not this then:
🙂
But I think you might be surprised by how worn AT-AT’s look. Check these photos out:

and this book page:
Base on your points above I would ask my self:
“1) these are not vehicles that have been on campaign for a long time. They were landed within the last 24 hours.” – Is this the first action they have seen?
“2) they are supposed to be something like 80 feet high, what is chipping their paint? They are not being hit by debris from the ground, and people are not climbing on them like the crew of a tank.” – Is something lifting them in and out of transports or do they walk on and off, something could be marking them? Also there own movements will probably cause damage.
But yes we want them to look cleaner than the rebels:
“3) technically by stars wars cannon, i think their armor is ceramic or plasteel not normal metal.” – I don’t think we will put blaster marks on them.
1) its probably not their first action, but the empire doesnt seem the type to let chipped/rusted stuff sit in their cargo hold. Upon return, droids would probably immediately be put to work cleaning/repainting it. I think i remember from one of those “star wars technical blueprint books” they mentioned tie fighters land in a different hanger than they launch in a star destroyer. They land, the pilot exits, and they essentially are immediately put through a cleaning/rearming/repair assembly line and them placed in queue to launch again.
2) true on the movement, but that would mean you’d see chipping around legs and joints, not on the top/back of the walker. Also, if i remember correctly, they have 2 distict points on each side where the lander “clamps” grab them. Those could be chipped. Will try and find picture.
Also, if they are made of some “future metal/ceramic” are they even painted? Painting is done for camo or to prevent corosion. The empire clearly want these things seen (they are like 22m tall) so no camo, and if their constraction material doesnt corrode, why would they be painted?
3) however, beyond all that real-life mumbo jumbo, you want to stick to star wars aethetics
Rebel hanger (dirty)

Imperial hanger (spotless, the floor is even reflective).

“2) true on the movement, but that would mean you’d see chipping around legs and joints, not on the top/back of the walker. Also, if i remember correctly, they have 2 distict points on each side where the lander “clamps” grab them. Those could be chipped. Will try and find picture. – See more at: http://www.beastsofwar.com/backstage/weekender-xlbs-year-salute-excel/comment-page-3/#comments”
I would agree probably not worth adding chipping on the tops of the panels and I’d love to see where lander “clamps” grab them, that would be awesome.
Here’s all I could find:
another great show, just hope salute survives!
Great show, guys. As for game mats, you may want to take a look at Cigar Box Battle’s offerings.
http://cigarboxbattlestore.bigcartel.com/
Well it says this on the site:
“high quality durable fleece”
“This is NOT a paper or PVC gaming mat”
So at least going in the right direction.
Love the painting argument, my preference would be to prime dark grey, highlight the large areas and panels with light gull grey then blend all over with a suitable neutral grey to blend it all in. seal with a satin or gloss varnish and then dark wash the entire model so it flows in the panel lines. Matt varnish the entire model and then start the weathering and streaking as the final stage before the final seal of matt varnish. Take a look at the undersides of US aircraft in the Pacific Theatre, which were predominantly a gull grey with lots of streaks and panel lines. A few airbrushed blaster marks would look good too.
Forget your Five or six stages I’d paint the AT AT’s in one easy stage.
“John paint the AT AT’s how you like mate” Job done.
lol
If the gaming tables work someone should go into production with them
nothing ideal around
For the past couple of years I have been introducing some of guys from our club to the joys of wargames outside of GW. Part of that education is a trip to Salute. They are always shocked at how little the ticket price is.
your both saying that same thing in different orders aren’t you? Yes it was the best product ever produced by games workshop, they go in eBay for like £30+ its so sad =(
Excellent Sunday coffee time distraction… thanks guys 🙂
Sitting in a maternity ward waiting for a baby to pop out. Would love to listen to an argument about at ats right now!!
Ohh mate were all behind you!!! (Not physically – so tell the other half it’s ok 😉
I have been somewhat ‘lucky’ the last two times baby was born within 5 minutes of arriving at hospital – after a 12 minute drive Lehrer I turned our clapped out 7 seater into an F1 car 😉
Anyway enjoy the experience mate and keep us posted.
Only bit of advise I can give is when it’s over … Erm … Don’t fall for the temptation to … Erm … Have a look.
Butchers counter 🙁 takes years to wipe the memory 🙁
very sound advice there..
Yes, keep us posted 🙂
Ahh brother love lol great show
I think one of the AT ATs should be painted like an ultramarine AT AT just for funsies and grabbing people’s attention.
Try http://www.cigarboxbattle.com they make really nice battle mats there not the static grass but they look really nice and they come in 4×4 sizes.
Hi guy’s , good funny candlelight show 🙂
I would love to give you hint for the ATAT, but i don’t think i am the good guy for that but for youre table problem i think you shoud try to talk with the guy’s at “Table War” remember last year on Kikstarter those cardboard Table with the beautiful Italian Girl
i think they can be perfect for you and not expensive at all when youre on the good side of the ocean, imagine all the practicle side of those !!
Storage, carrying bags, different size of tables 2×4, 4×4, 6×4 ,you can make them the size you need
Mass debate
Market Penetration
50 shades of grey
Shocking behaviour from a bunch of grown adults! 😉
Well if your going to sum it up like that – then yeah lol
I have the Space Marine Combat cards set, I’ll send them off to you
A great show, and its a shame about Salute, I’ve had some epic trips down to the Excel Centre
I’m pretty sure Games Workshop did a few of those Combat Card games. I remember having the Epic and the Man o War set.
John, it’s not your fault that mummy and daddy fight.
Hey Warzan, I have an idea for the bolt action tables that may be very cost effective and look super cool…. Teddy bear fur… hear me out here, you can get it at most craft stores for a relatively small price, hit it with some sprays and bam, you have a very organic looking base for your table… here are some links with pictures….
Teddy bear fur last i checked had increased in price by 7x
It’s actually quite a pricey thing to use these days 🙂
Cant wait for the WWX boot camp weekend now.
Looking forward to seeing these tables in action. I’m currently setting up my hobby/gaming area and will be making three or four smaller tables of my own, along with one larger one.
Got my eye on the Faith RPG but it’ll come down the the wallet closer to the end date of the kickstarter
@warzan rather than trying to get loads of grass mat. would be really cheap to get a big roll off painters drop cloth cut it into just over 4 by 4 squares raid the pound shops for silicone caulking make sure it is the paint able stuff. then you just coat the whole fabric will the caulking and you can texture it with sponges wire wool and the like let it dry and just spray paint it or air brush it. bingo instant gaming mats.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtRMoIZfPPg, i did it after watching this guys tutorial
I was looking at the Faith RPG, but somehow it just doesn’t feel right without dice. But that’s my own quirks (and diceaddiction) talking…
Really enjoyed todays show. I have started to look forward to Backstage weekender, perfect for Sundays!
I’m glad you guys watched that Falcon weathering video on YouTube. I agree that oils would perhaps have taken too long, but the process you went with using the Vallejo based wash produced a great result, John!
I’ve still got my old two sets of Space War and Monsters combats cards from 1992! I have another set that was given to me but the instruction card is missing, so I don’t know what they were called, but they’re filled with Warhammer minis from 1995. Space War is filled with Rogue Trader minis, including a couple of chaos marines and eldar, but most of all my favourites were the marines and the Squats. I never understood the strange symbols on them and the Monsters set though – I think they related to something in the Rogue Trader/Warhammer rulebooks. I loved the names they gave the Space War cards. It’s something they used to do in their adverts in White Dwarf before I started buying the magazine, as I’d found out a little while ago when I came across the Stuff of Legends website http://www.solegends.com/index.htm and saw the adverts for minis at 50p each and a few at £2.50! http://www.solegends.com/citrt/rt01spacemarines.htm
It will be a great shame if the South London Warlords can’t find another venue. It’ll also be a personal shame for me as it’s the only wargames convention that I can afford to travel to. Hopefully there will be somewhere else in London, maybe the outskirts of London that’s potentially cheaper for them.
Poor old John, stuck in the middle, lol. 😀 I think what John was doing looked good – if that’s not the same as what Warren and Lloyd were saying, go with that! 😛
I have to note – please leave my username out of the WWX voucher prize draw because it’s not what I’m collecting at the moment and I have too many unbuilt minis to get through first. It’s tempting to get something new, and those minis are very cool, but I’d rather let someone else who is collecting WWX to have the chance of winning the prize. Cheers! 🙂
Great Weekender and XLBS (just watched both back to back) as was demoing Dreadball Xtreme for Mantic at Firestorm Games’ grand re-opening in Cardiff @warzan you would have been proud of the carnage that ensued from exploding crates and Convict shock collars.
I digress – enjoyed the format, single camera angle worked OK in the circumstances. I enjoyed the debate about the AT-AT coulours, but I have to agree with others why not just let John get on without (or else settle it with a NERF Dule).
Am not just going to start watching the whole of the WWE Week (weekend are my catch up time). The little that I have seen of this game is certainly leading me towards backing the KS tomorrow).
Hope the power is back now (even though it was mid week it went off) and I’ll look forward to next week’s shows.
Happy Sunday folks
Loving the AT-ATs John, keep em coming!
(Now also, if you would be so kind as to give me one of those WWX vouchers that’d be grand 😉 )
Gotta love 2 brothers arguing over toys….. ha ha… good show. I hope the issues with Salute work themselves out. Anyway now to wait for the WWX kickstarter to load…. thanks for the show.
I was watching the show yesterday thinking. “Considering John’s just gotten a job, and the Angel’s new book as a surprise gift, he’s looking rather glum.”
With today’s episode… I now know why.
In any case, it’s given me some ideas for my Imperial Assault AT-ST.
on the AT-AT look: such a funny argument, but I’m with Lloyd on this, can’t make it look more imperial than the actual imperial atats 🙂 lol
Poor John, stuck in between the Battling Johnstons.
As to the boards for Bolt Action BC, have you look at stuff used by model train hobbyists for your grass? Some of it comes in rolls and can even be heat gun shaped to form hills. I don’t know the brand here in the States.
Maybe it’s my eye or the camera’s (in)ability to capture the color variations, but I found it was kind of difficult to see any weathering effects on the AT-AT until the camera was used at a 2 foot range. And don’t forget to add blast marks/damage.
I’ve got some 40k Combat Cards somewhere, even has Squats in it!
That debate made me giggle like a little girl. “They are arguing about what grey to put on their giant grey fighting machines”. But this was not the case, you guys argued about “giant grey fighting machines from Star Wars, which if they would be the real deal would be the most awesome thing on this planet”. This is important!
MTFBWU!
I would prime it, then leave it outside for a day. saves a lot of paint 🙂
Happy Sunday!
I wish I was able to go and play your Hoth display, it sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun!
Great discussion on AT AT.. Love the show again
spraypaint gray, armydip it and tadaa done ;p
Great t o see you keep going during the power cut – I have the space marine cards somewhere (not sure where) – from memory these were pictures of the rogue trader marines, maybe even some from the plastic boxed set.
John’s head must be turned by you guys! Are you trying to make life difficult for the new employee?
You’d think the real way to do the AT-ATs would be to let the guy who’s doing it make the detailed decisions, that way he wouldn’t be micromanaged and you wouldn’t have to fight.
So your web server is not on site. That’s a good thing.
I agree with everyone. Just let john get on with it. I’m sure he knows what is available for paint, etc.
Overall it was a good show.
Happy Sunday. I love the sound of those gaming tables. I you can release the plans.
Not sure whether another opinion is welcome but I’d say the important thing is that these AT-ATs do not look like Star Wars toys. I think this would call for heavier weathering than I’d normally go for.
Good luck keeping your sanity, John!
@warzan looking around there are a few products designed for architecture models. Seems like they are being sold to them and not really marketed to trainers or gamers. Worth a look.
I’ve got nothing to add, i just want some Wild West Exodus goodies.
Here’s some Grass Mats.

Great Show as always fellas – next time Warren and Lloydd go at it though, can John be excused from sitting in the middle. I thought he was going to catch one in the cross fire there at one point.
Re salute – every time I buy a ticket for this wonderful event, I’m struck by how cheap it is. I understand that many might feel it’s priced correctly, but I’ve always felt the price should closer to £20-25? The up lift in revenue would surely support the slight downturn in attendance? But no matter where they go next year, I’ll follow.
The salute progress reports are good, keep it up guys
You had better paint the big AT-AT black or I’m driving to Coleraine to sort you out! (I’ll bring cake just so Warren lets me through the door).
Happy sunday mates,
Warzan about grass mats, check out railroad scenery markers thinks are few ones that has a similar mat like gw or near the same.
Hope this help.
brotherly love at its finest, great sh….
Deep cut studio mats are fantastic in the cloth format, and at 6×4 you could as lloyd said put eyelets in, but i would use bungies to secure one side to the other under the tabletop
Try Flory models washes. Look superb over grey as they are designed to be used on aircraft models. They dry like a chalk and you can go lighter or darker depending on how much you rub off. They stay in panel lines so it does it all for you.
That ending was timed just right! Or was a fix! 😉
Great show as always gentlemen, I think we need more romantic shows in the future. 😉
Regarding the AT-AT debate the only thing I could think of was “Poor John. Would he have taken the job if he had seen this coming?” In the end I think you should let the tank god do what the tank god does best.
“The Siege of the ExCel Centre” sounds like a great story in the making. 🙂
Thanks for bringing us a great Sunday show guys despite the lack of power! I really liked the sudden end
Hope Salute find a way to keep the show running. I attending for the first time this year, hate to see it close down. If the have to move I hope it will move to a place closer to one af the major airports.
The ending leaves space for a sequel….XLBS 2 ‘The moment the lights came on’.
faith looks interesting, might take a look. Would really like to have a scene a more miniatures based Thunderbirds game, perhaps 7TV could do it.
Be nice to John. Give the man a Herculean task to start his new job and then pile of the grief! Come on guys, Maybe trust him a bit more. Anyone that can unfog acrylic coating might be up to the task.
I can only imagine John, during the hilarious argument, sitting there with Sanatra in his head.
“I did it myyyyy wayyyyy!”
First, I have 2 of the Combat cards sets. Orcs and Dwarves. Second, I like the look of the AT-ATs and think John is on the right track.
Poor John, you will make him will earn his money. The technique so far looks good.
YOU CAN’T HIGHLIGHT WITH A DARK COLOR.
Have you guy seen Frontline gamings F.A.T. Mats? They may be perfect for your Boot Camps: http://eustore.frontlinegaming.org/
What a day, a another great XLBS show and the WWX Kickstarter.
On the AT-ATs, why not just combine the two methods in a way? Warren’s grey primer base, pre-shaded with a darker grey color, and then highlighted with Lloyd’s light grey, gloss sealed, and then a black/dark grime wash, and bam, job’s done.
What an endin… The only thing I could think of while you were debating grey was, this would be me and my brother if we were to work together!! Is Lloyd still going to do his Romans? I’ve spent many hours scrolling and reading through warlards site, I think I fancy some of the Early imperial Romans.
I remember these fro when I was about 10 or 11, so early 90’s. There were orc cards as well, but I can’t remember whether they had the other factions at all. but it was a great game.
HOBBY HELP!
Know a guy who covered a table in velour so I thought I would look some up for you. https://www.fabric.com/buy/uo-954/stretch-panne-velvet-velour-hunter Check this stuff out.
Try Fontline gaming for the mats. Also maybe look at Casino stuff, a good poker table fabric (or pool table fabric) might give you enough grip for the table.
Another great episode. It’s nice to see guys passionate about their work/hobby.
We used to play Combat Cards, its was really simple, you can pick them up on ebay for about a fiver a deck.
Whole decks are up on Youtube, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Faimdgi-L10
the Legion of the Dammed Brother Mordin really shows how the models have evolved.
Space Squats start at 1:40, for the under 40’s Squats were Space Dwarfs who vanished for 40K sometime in my 20’s or 30’s.
the key to getting those AT-Ats done well.
do them quick…then spend a little time with some details.
it’s all good guys…get it done 😉
Wwx
Great show guys, keep up the good work.
Great show, loved the mood lighting.
Others have already mentioned the Citadel combat cards, so I’ll just add my lament to the Salute news…
On seeing the title of the show I was all prepared for you to announce that due to the not-so-brilliant lighting at the venue, or their stunning expansion they’d been forced to move to somewhere bigger and better. It was a real shock to then hear that ‘last at London ExCel’ might mean ‘last Salute’!
I’d happily pay much more for a ticket, although I have to admit that one of the many reasons I like it is that the price is inviting. i.e. it’s not trying to say ‘this event is worth X amount of money, so this is what we’re going to charge’, but rather ‘we want this event to be as fun and accessible as possible, and to maximise the opportunity for new people to come along and find out what it’s about’.
You get stuck in John. They may be your bosses and your friends but give it back man. I think you need to to be more confident. I believe it’s appreciated at BoW. After all, you’ve re-built a tank, Brian ejaculated!
Thunderbird are go Sam! My first kickstarter!
…s
Faith looks pretty good, but I just can’t get behind Thunderbirds.
I do like the looks of the Watchers for WWX. Kinda sad that the Holy Order isn’t available as a starter set though. I like the look of the altcaps – or was it the shiftcontrols? 😉
love the show!
The AT-AT discussion is hilarious.
I have the dwarf set of combat cards sitting here on my shelf 🙂
Oh and the static grass mats are just rayon fibre material, its common in the automotive industry – BUT getting a material company to do a run in the greens and browns as per the GW sheets has a very large minimum order quantities, you would need to be GW to have the cash to capitalise it.
Best XLBS Ever
The Warhammer battle mats are great I have one my self and there are five at my local club and they all get used every week as apposed to the two realm of battle gaming boards the club has that hardly get used at all
Lighter AT-ATs, without a doubt.
First, because you said that lighting was poor at the Excel centre. Darker AT-ATs will loose detail and will just look like dark blobs. Second, because the process is more logical. Adding zenithal highlights after you washed it will take away the darkness of those washes. Third, because you’re going to play on a snow table, so a lighter AT-AT will look more at home on there.
Just my 2 cents.
HAPPY SUNDAY !!!
Hi guys. Have you looked at Antenocitis workshop site and their Mat O War grass and sand mats?
this one was better than w. power on 🙂 and table w lights looked awesome..
On the topic of scales try Battletech in 6mm scale … best war games ever in my opinion and about WWII history … yo should try Norman Davieses books.. i really think he is best wwii historian out there.. his books r massive but reads quickly almost like fiction novels try this for start http://www.normandavies.com/books/europe-at-war-1939-1945-/?lang=en
Another great show guys, looking forward to the Vlog this week.
well sounds like john has had a good week…..
how about you each do an at at each?
This is the woodland scenics grass mat. Looks like its what you are after

We are working on a huge game at a Swedish Gaming convention and we are buying ordinary mats ( by the yard) and drybrushing green. This was cut and “painted” in like 20 minutes. Pictures can be found at:

The best way to paint the AT-ATs would be to say “John, Do it.” and walk away.
I have one of those Millennium Falcons. I was thinking of painting it myself so I would love for you guys to do a painting episode for that one. Plus the more paintins how too’s and game demo’s you can do the better.
The pain in Johns voice is priceless….
I gave that AT-AT discussion a fast forward in the end. The VLOG’s with John were good however.
A great show again guys. Have you thought about camouflage schemes for the AT-AT’s ?
I had that set of chaos cards, don’t remember there being others but I maybe wrong.
just a note here
in Denmark we call them A.T.-A.T not atats -thx john for saying it right
With all this discussion about scales, and always getting smaller, It made me think of one of my favourite games, Inquisitor, 54mm!
That never seems to get any love any more which is a shame. (I wouldn’t like to try and do waterloo in 54mm mind!) But i did love that game.
Especially when everyone at my local GW went for artimus, and I had a guardsman with a sniper rifle, and they never once took a marine with a helmet! Silly space marines..
Honestly, you lads get more like the Carry On team each week, with your one liners and your inuendos. I’m just waiting for Warren to develop the Sid James laugh. Lloyd to start walking in in 1960s camping regalia and going “Ohhhh hellooooo”. John to grow a handle bar mouctache and adopt the Winsdor Davis demeanour. And Justin to keep getting all flustered at Warren’s constant risk-ay comments and going “Ohhhhh Matron….nooooooooo!”. God help us if you ever get a woman into the studio. Carry On Beasties…
Overall I enjoyed both the weekend and the XLBS. Kudos to you folks for managing to get them both put together during a power outage. That’s dedication, well done!
Glad to hear that John is aboard full time. I have to admit though that after the first few minutes of the debate I tuned out, and felt a little bad about John and Dave having to sit through this for likely a second or third time. I admire the passion, but it didn’t particularly make for great viewing, especially since you were constrained by battery time.
As I’ve moved up into management through my career I’ve learned that you need to trust your team members. More often than not you will need to delegate tasks in order to keep your head above water. However, that doesn’t mean you have to delegate everything but if you have extremely specific desires about how something is done, that’s the time to do it yourself. If you don’t have the time or ability to do it, trust your team to get you there.
I have the Warhammer 40k Space War version of the Combat cards you had, full iwth instructions and everything!!
Basically Rogue Trader Space Marines, Orks and Squats!

Felt, but look good

your mecha is THE wrong scale… needs to be ^mm…… LMAO
6mm
I do like the pool results. And yes a great show guys.
Second hand mats are fetching around £40 – £50 on Ebay.
That ending lol
