Giants Clash With Humans In Jack Edwards’ Scal Wargame
July 15, 2026 by brennon
Ash Barker recently talked about this game, Scal, and I thought I'd bring it to the folks here OnTableTop so you could also get a peek at this fun new Indie wargame. See what you make of what Jack Edwards has been working on.
Scal Rules // Jack Edwards
Here's the background to Scal from Edwards...
"We were Kings once. Did you know that? Back in the days of Bran. These lands were filled with nought but our kind, and the beasts that wander.
Now the manfolk have come. They lay claim to our lands and desecrate the bones of our ancestors by building their great warrens within them. They hunt our kin. They render the fat, harvest meat from our carcasses and even grind our bones to make their abominable black powder.
Gather the clans, the time has come for the Scal to march to war."
This then lays the groundwork for a 6mm scale skirmish game where one player takes on the role of a herd of giants, made using 28mm miniatures, and then human invaders, made using 6mm miniatures! Gameplay is designed to be quick and easy to understand with a narrative focus and can be played in under an hour.
Inside the book, you'll find campaign rules, twenty-one scenarios, rules for two factions (Scal and Humans), plus forty-two traits which can be used to customise your Scal so that they are a character unique to you. That means 135,970,773,120 combinations (apparently. I'm terrible at maths).
You will also find rules for variant building and roster sheets you can use to track everything. The rules also include a guide for scaling the game to allow more players and larger forces.
I really like the idea of giants versus humans using a mix of different scaled miniatures to achieve that look on the tabletop. This also goes to show that there's loads of creative ideas floating around in the wargaming ether that are worth taking a closer look at if you get the time. It also features awesome artwork by Grim_Hive_Miniatures. Love that cover!
Make sure to also check out Ash Barker's video for a deeper dive into what the game is all about.
Are you tempted to check this out?
