Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil. This includes no philosophy, no home computer culture wars.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

Answer: Aside from The Emperor and his guard in SW:L nothing like that has happened to me yet. I might be really annoyed. But at the same time I don’t play tournaments any more so why bother with a new edition.

No music today, the daughter still sleeps. Bloody teenagers and their long sleeping in!

Oooh … easy answer this week.

(1) I stop giving a damn about whatever comes next from that company
(2 a) not buy the new version so you can keep using your army
or
(2 b)  learn to improvise, adapt and overcome the ‘missing’ rules

It’s not like the new version used a 100% new engine that completely re-invented the stats for units.

Such disregard for existing addicts *eh* customers can only mean that they’re going to do it again in the future unless the new version is a catastrophic commercial failure.

Your best bet is to find a company that hasn’t done that yet or learn to predict these rug pulls.

It’s at times like this that you have to remember one critical aspect of this hobby :
It is your game and your hobby the moment you get those toys.
There is not a single thing any company can do about that.
It is why we have to avoid app-driven games like the plague they are, unless the apps are open to modification by us as customers.

I can’t see what all the fuss is about with the GW models . I had a few back in the 90s when they were Citadel IRC . I had a few 2 figure blister packs of Orcs & Dwarves . You got a body with 3 heads and 2 left / right arms for the Orc , The dwarf had a molded on shield , so you got the 3 heads and 3 right arms . I also had some early Space Marines , I think 10 in a box with an extra head and arm pair for a commander type figure , and at the time about $10 a box ! As someone who built 1/35 figures for over 20 years at that time , the kit bash ability was lousy . Really hard to repose an armoured clad leg , but I tried to limited success . I ventured again in GW in the early 2000s as I got a bunch of partial SM sprues at a hobby swap . By that time they were covered in so much heraldry , relics , fancy scroll work , they looked to me like parade dress not something you would use in combat . I think I gave them to a co workers kid who was just staring down the SM worm hole .

I think about 95% of what I build now is WW2 . I’ve got all Warlord’s plastics , some like the Soviets , about 8 boxes worth of Infantry , other like the French , 2 sprues , Warlord freebies . I have metal and resin from 20 different companies and most fit in pretty well with each other scale wise . Detail wise it varies , but really easy to make a bland figure pop if you add some extra plastic gear from the parts box . Game wise , I tried a couple of Bolt Action games years ago and found it boring . I tend to enjoy the building , kit bashing , painting part of the hobby . Saw a few behind the scenes Warlord Day videos on you tube and there seems to be a plastic early war Poles box coming , including a few horses so you can build Lancers , very exciting . As well a plastic French Schneider 75mm gun , which seems to have 3 different wheel sets , I’m thinking for different nations as it was sold all over the world , again a kit I’m very much looking forward to .

Hobby pledge , well the 1st set of jungle plants has arrived , so I should get them painted and sorted out where they go around my resin Japanese bunker . As well I have a Squadron box of Sherman M4A4s coming to add to the 9 I’ve all ready built . A couple of the WG new plastic Pak 40s , one to build with a Winter crew either in greatcoats or FJ . And the other in travel mode behind a 251 D halftrack , so I should get to work on the seat vehicle figures . I do venture a little off the path at times ,I picked up a set of plastic farm animals a while ago and finally figured out what to do with a couple of cows  .

Pledge:  Get some Ogres painted and play some KoW as I get ready for the tournament in a couple of weeks.  My order is here from Big Jim’s Printing Service so I can get started on some more Abyssal Dwarfs at some point too.

Answer: There is no need to keep up with the current version of the game unless you play in open competition.  If, like most of us do, you are playing a game in a group that have all the miniatures and setup needed then why do you feel compelled to move to an updated edition?  You have everything you need to keep playing and having fun.

In Historical gaming, rules are in the market for longer.  Should there be an updated rulebook it will come after way more than four/five years and often not be much more than a tidy up with a couple of extra shiny rules or unit updates to excite existing players.  It is often possible to keep playing with the original rulebook.  There is almost never an edition beyond a second.  The WWII rules leaders have gone to a more GW type model with Flames of War and Bolt Action, both having multiple editions.  Their model of high cost investment in plastic production requires gamers to keep buying and updating armies.  Given the finite nature of most WWII interest, changing the rules is the easiest way to make that happen.

Finally on this one – if you want to keep up with the latest hotness from a manufacturer then it is disingenuous to complain about the methods they use to be able to produce your new shiny.  If they feel the need to ask collectors to forego a section of their collection in order to bring out new things you want, then you are just going to have to strap on the big boy/girl pants and suck it up.

Pledge… do something other than RPG writing. I’m having fun doing it, but I have minis to paint and so many solo games I could try.

Answer. Fight the urge the buy the new stuff. Keep playing how you want with what you have. If you’re not happy with ‘official’ miniatures and not playing in tournaments (which I never do) then buy minis you like from ‘unofficial sources’.

If you are playing against a friend and he complains that your minis are not official… then he is taking life too seriously.

Edit: Also be grateful that you are using physical  and not electronic product as the way forward with ebooks, video games and music seems to be ‘streaming or download’ with the company you ‘bought’ the item from having the ability to delete it from your library at any point and not refunding you.

It’s kind of funny/sad to see that when the current Xbox was announced as digital only Sony managed to ‘win’ by focussing on physical discs. With Rockstar announcing that GTA6 will not have a physical version and Sony following the same it’s like we’re back to square one again. I doubt any boycott will hold (the previews so far make it look too damned sexy), but it would be funny if GTA6 sales tanked as a result of this.

OTOH … I haven’t bought a physical game for pc for a long time, but that is mostly because (a) shops no longer sell them and (b) both GoG and Steam have been pretty good (GoG especially makes offline backups for games viable).

Anyways … back to our hobby. The physical aspect is why I find myself focussing on it more.
I’m not bothered by version upgrades, provided there is a good reason for them doing one.
A new version that has been refined with tweaks and all those fixes that any ruleset has after a few years of real life use ?
That’s not a big deal. Both Warlord and Battlefront have handled that reasonably well.

With companies like GW I mostly look at the models and ignore the rules. I know I’ve said it before, but it sucks to know that the game itself could have been so much better if they had wanted to make it so.

Editions: when GW “killed” WH Fantasy, and brought out the abomination that is Age of Sigmar, I sold off all my WHFB. Probably took a year, doing about 100 eBay auctions a month, but I did it. I started every auction at 1c and let the market take it. Never was disappointed – those last minute battles over partial armies to get the set were epic.

I think that other than the rather *meh* start of AoS that it has evolved into a somewhat coherent setting.
The only real problem it has is the same thing that all of GW games have : version upgrades and narrative events that don’t actually do anything …

Meanwhile we’ve got King of War that also had narrative updates that had an actual effect on the games.
And they also use the effects of their global campaigns instead of whatever fake f*ckery GW do when they have one.
I don’t envy the position they are in, but I’d argue that it is better for them to not do a global campaign at all when the stakes are non-existent and the results are whatever marketing had decided they should be.

Case in point is that ‘siege of death mire’ thing for 11th edition:
It’s not that I was expecting anything of substance to happen, but it was still disappointing to see those ‘wins’ get nullified in a 3 week campaign that ended with a 2-1 ‘victory’ for the spacemarines and that was declared a ‘stale mate’ for reasons that only make sense to GW.

And of course (as is tradition?) there is no real data for us to verify the GW claims either (unless that’s on their WH+ thing … if that is still alive that is).

I love GWulla. I have a 1000 Point Death Guard Army that includes my rogue trader Land raider and predator. I have more than a 1000 point now thanks to my recent Combat patrol purchase. I play it now with my son. He uses his 3d printer for terrain. I make walls and floor bases from cardboard and glue. GWulla might be evil but if you compare them to Microsoft , EA and other tech entertainment companies they are generous. If I had more time I would get involved in clubs and play other games. But GWulla have a huge lore business going and I enjoy watching , reading and not necessarily paying for it all. The GW haters need to learn that noone can compete with GW scale and the positive impact they have

This weeks pledge is to continue with the Heroes 3 minis. Feels like I’ve said that several weeks in a row now. I blame the hot weather.

What is your reaction? – In the case of the example that triggered this question, it has been on the cards since the Primaris came along, two or three editions ago now. In general, you can probably re-use said old units as stand-ins for other units if you want to use them.

If I understood correctly it is the primaris versions themselves that got squatted ?
Which sounds reasonable as ‘Assault squad’ and ‘Tactical squad’ is a much more reasonable name the whatever-the-heck-issessors …

If the Ork Codex was full of juicy lore like in ancient times I’d be all over it, but after the dissappointment that was 8th edition Ork codex I just can’t justify the cost for a boring army list.

Anyways … in terms of hobby I’ve wasted my weekend talking to Claude again.
The good news is that I’ve almost used my entire weekly limit which refreshes on tuesday, so tomorrow I will have to do something else 🙂

Well – my pledge was going to be to start contributing to these threads but now it is Monday morning – better late than never. I have been a member and visiting this site almost daily since 2014 getting enjoyment from reading other peoples comments and points of view. I also find this the easiest place to get an update on what is new and interesting. Time to pay it back. Was also going to assemble a unit of ungor – managed one.

Re WH40K rules changes eliminating units it doesn’t impact me as I like the building, painting collecting side of the hobby and typically buy miniatures to make up squads or skirmish size forces of anything that catches my imagination but I can see how that would be annoying to someone who collects armys to play competitive games. Scale creep does my head in far more. I have never bought a primaris space marine. However to keep selling us stuff all companies need to keep their products evolving and we would all be annoyed if there was nothing new and shiny. GW goes through cycles of producing things I have no interest in, destroying the lore so I am not interested, and then producing a bunch of things I have to have and backgrounds I need to read.

Funny thing I noticed: In my question I did not mention G’Wullu or Warhammer but everybody piled on them. I’m pretty sure there are more companies who did such things even if at a lesser degree (See SW:L)

I see what you mean but at least that can be (to a degree) be explained by better production technologies. Though it does look silly to put a 2nd edition Space Marine next to a current primaris. Looks a bit like “take your child to work day” XD
