About the Project

In this project I will be building boards that are interesting and unique from The Walking Dead and using them in another project as I document my solo play through of Mantic Games The Walking Dead All Out War. I may take inspiration from the comics or the TV show, i'm not fussed for timelines etc and i'll be making my own story for Rick along the way. Enjoy this project is the building and prep project, go view my other one for the storyline (battle reports)

checking layout with the trees

so the paint dried and the differences in hues/tone completely disappeared. nevermind, it’s only going to be covered over with ground cover.

Now onto the forest. I’ve got to be careful here as i want to give the idea of a pretty dense forest but i need to keep it completely playable and tie in with the event cards. I did this quite well with the corn field from my farm board, the area is clearly a field and your mind sees it as such and knows it’s dense, but at the same time it is entirely flexible and models can move freely around it, only the fence really is a stopper for movement.

So, to give this idea of a thick dense forest but keep it playable i have clumped the trees together, a bit like the cardboard tiles, but i also have added a few singles just to make it feel like it extends beyond the board edges. Let me know if you think i’ve got it right here. The sizes of the trees might make model movement (aka getting your hands in there) a bit difficult, but the trees are quite bendy/flexible.

It’s suddenly turned hot as balls in the UK and so instead of having the paint dry on my brush I’ve turned back to using terrain.

Here i am starting to use the models i already have in the collection and add them to their own board, of which i made too many for terrainfest.

Give harmless Rick a hand would ya...

The third variant of Rick is the disfigured but determined one.

I still haven’t figured out a decent way of painting stone washed jeans, if anyone knows of a simple method then let me know! at this point I’m not interest in 300 steps, 3 or 4 at most. I expect starting for caledor blue base colour with drakenhoff wash is too dark/deep a starting point.

Batch painting the armoured boys and girls

To help speed things along i decided to paint all the armoured models in one go, they are all in prison guard uniforms so it made sense.

I did consider painting some of them still wearing the prisoners jumpsuits but a quick flick through some images showed them basically always in darker colours.

I elected to give Michonne a red bandana this time as a bit of splash colour though rather than the more subdued tones she has in the comic.

the batch process obviously made it quicker to do these models but as you can see, they still need re-basing.

Abraham and woodland camo

Sorry for the hiatus! I was busy ripping out and re-plumbing the utility ready for new layout and cupboards to go in.

I decided to go back in with everyone’s favourite tough guy, Abraham.

The comic series doesnt actually stipulate his camo scheme, even in the colour images, just generic green camo. It’s certainly not the modern MTP pattern i did for my British in Afghan so that leaves us with the old M81 Woodland pattern.

Here i used copilot to guestimate the right colours for woodland and then did a generic splodging pattern to ‘represent’ the camo pattern. It came out fine, then i went and put an agrax earthshade wash over the whole thing! I forgot what i learned doing the MTP, only recess wash, don’t bathe it!

It is still camo, just really dark camo now. I shall have to remember this when i do the next version of him!

Abraham and woodland camo

For reference the order of painting for the camo was

green

brown

khaki

black

this was just to try and match what appears to be the layout of the disruptive pattern.
