About the Project
I have so many 'other' minis and projects on the go at any one time so I wanted/needed a nice tidy place to put progress photos and thoughts about those bits that just don't fall into a more specific project plog. Get ready for a mass of everything mini related from all over the board!!

54mm - We meet again
Been waaaaaaaaay toolong since I worked on any of the old 54mm Inquisitor models I’ve been collecting so thought it was about time I broke one out. This time I went with the Eldar Ranger. Gorgeous sculpt by Alex Hedstrom from way back in the day.
Made a wee start both on and off stream .
The Eldar Rangers follow the so called Path of the Outcast. They are scouts, infiltrators, assassins and so much more. For the paint scheme I wanted something worn, subtle with plenty of character reflecting the character of an outcast ranger. None of the garish bright splendid colours usually seen with the aspect warriors and warhosts of the Eldar but something more befitting a wanderer, an sole travellers who travels alone and blends in. Dull worn leathers and materials for the most part. I dont want him to look too sahbby and like he just crawled out of hive bottom but still – his attire must reflect his role and character.
A slight nod and allowance to where he comes from and his heritage is shown in the choice of inner robes. His chest armour and loin cloth reflect his craftworld of origin - Mymeara. His outer coat will be a rich but worn oiled beige leather BUT I decided to do it in a slightly unusual technique and order.
The coat was primed using an airbrush. First black (stynylez ofc) and then laterally primed over with grey. The using a brush and schminke titanium white I prehighlighted the lower parts of the coat and further defined the highlights and folds of the coat adn added some scratches and wear to the coat. This is all in preperation adn anticipation of how I will later paint the coat – with glazes; a mix of xv-88 (GW) and soft tone (AP).
I did the freehand edging and the world rune BEFORE actually painting the coat for a reason as I want the rune to be visible on the coat but not to stand out and look like it was painted/emblazoned on after. I want it to fade into the coat’s colours as if it was embossed or treated into the coat a long time ago and it has faded back. Again he is a ranger and such details such be in the background not screaming forth like what we usually expect from the warriors of the other aspect temples.
Wee Greg ;)
Been working away on the 28mm Inquisitor Eisenhorn from BL. Nice enough sculpt based on Clint Langley’s art for the original Eisenhorn novels. Of course they decided to do it bloody failcast styleee. I got lucky enough though and didnt have any nasty bubbles or slip casts to deal with but there was still all those failcast vents and gates to deal with!
For the paint I went cannon and used the 54mm Eisenhorn I painted a while back for reference. He’s getting there; just his metallics and staff to finish up.
Trying to get him done quick quick in time to give him away to a viewer on my birthday stream on twitch next week.
Bit of a big fella arentcha?!
Still no glasses, still finding other stuffs to do
got this fella as an add on to the awaken realms Kickstarter for their game The Edge: Dawnfall. Very very late to deliver on the pledges but one hell of a great product. The minis are gorgeous and in pretty decent plastic. Quite a few neeed a little tweaking and hot water treatment but all in all pretty damn nice.
This big chap is a resin add-on for The faceless faction. He’s called the Slasher and he is a bruiser. Took a lot of prep and clean up but so worth it. Can’t wait to get some paint down on him.
Still Wooding along
A small thing but thought it might be worth posting up. After doing the wood workup for viewers on a resin base (finished below ) –
I felt like doing some more woody things so after a pissy day at work, I cam home and made a thing from some old paint stirrer stick and bits of lollipop sticks – a sandwich board, I think they are called. I needed a wee thingy to go on the base for my ‘Puppeteer’ from Kimera Studios.
paint stirrer stick, fragments of lollipop stick, bit of paperclip, superglue and a scrap of sandpaperPut together in about 10 mins (not including the unsticking the damn thing from my fingers time)
Similar workup again as to what was done on the wood for the resin base (video tutorial below here …down down – earlier project entry)
Started by lightly drying brushing some schminke white over a black prime the painted up with Scale 75 paints – Walnut, Sandalwood, Black Leather, Iroko and Birch. Was rather chuffed with the results.
But……….. needed something more. I wanted it to look really old and rotten. So keep wash of Magi-Mix (Nuln, Agrax, Lahmium, Water 2:1:1:1) and then built up some thinned out Sherwood Green (S75) to add some algae/lichen/green crap on some of the more rotten areas of the board.
I wanted some sort of signage on it though……….. Hmmmm……
The Model which this will eventually set alongside is called The Puppeteer and comes from a 5 model range called ‘Freak Show’
So my first thought was to print out some Olde freak show posters off the interwebs on some recycled A4 (when printing posters for terrain, diormas etc – the cheaper recycleed A4 paper is way better than the ream of A4 copy paper one may or may not have pinched from work as it gives a more weathered cheap print poster look) which would probably have worked well enough but then I thought that a kind of handpainted janky look would go better with the overall piece. So…… nervously ………as I was rather fond of the wood effect I had already got and didnt want to feth it up, I set to it………….
And this/that was the outcome 🙂 Freshly painted on stream this morning in what is the last thing I will have painted here in Korea as immediately after stream I started to pack up all my paints, brushes and equipment for the big move back to Ireland.
Easy enough job – the cruddy wite background was done with a really buggered up, rough bristled, shot, synthetic brush; as I wanted to show the brushstrokes where someone had shoddily painted a background on the board to then put some lettering over. The writing was then freehanded on – trying to make it look carefully but not professionally done. Still looked a bit clean so a few feathered out strokes of thinned athonian camoshade and seraphim sepia grottied it up a wee bit and then we have it. The whole thing is about the size of a postage stamp – lol. Twas a fun wee mini-mini-project to do. Hope you like 😀
Jan's Dirty Old Wood
Not a huge update but a wee something folk might find useful. Some viewers were asking about how I paint my wood… o.O so I did a quick~ish wood workup on stream yesterday.
Done mostly with Scale75 scalecolour paints. I’ve uploaded the segment of the VOD from the stream to YouTube and embeded it below 🙂
Little bit of progress on Lady V’adrael of the Ordo Hereticus. Coming along nicely. Think we’ll be giving her away end of the month
Pull Over - I spy a heretic!
With Zayna finished it’s time for another on stream project. I really liking some of the Grimskull/Wargamesexclusive models these days. Specifically their Hersey Hunters range (dont care much for their boobified AdMech & Tau stuffs) so I ordered up this wee gem last month. Lady Inquisitor on a DoomCruiser bike. (Here for those interested). Gorgeous sculpt and casting as per usual from WGE. The base she comes with is a little bland so I’ll pop her on a MAS base instead. She’s getting painted purely live on stream so I can go through the different workups, paints et al with the viewers.
'scuse the terrible WiP photo - I snapped it quickly on phone before heading off to work this morningAs there is so much metal involved I started off by just basing the entire bike with my usual 3metal aged metal workup. The tut is on YT.
It gives a nice aged rich base from which to work on which helps to provide a deeper volume. From there I wanted a chipped paintjob on the bike. Now you could get stuck in with MiG or the AK Interactive’s chipping solutions which work well but on something this small and delciate, chipping solution provides more problems than it the ease it may provide. Instead jsut painted the reds on over the metal basework. Super thin layers and just leave bits out as you layer up to show the raw metal showing through where the paint was chipped. Once the red paintjob is layered up, I then then glazed back into the recessess with a super super thing glaze of pure black. This gives a more smoke/soot stained feel to the bike’s original red paintjob. I want the bike to look VERY well used and worn. No parade ground bright spangly and clean looks here. I want this bike to look this it actually gets used. A lot! So that’s where we are up to. I made a wee start on the Inquisitor’s leather trench coat and cowl but more on that later!
Paints used so far:
3Metal Workup – (GW) Warplock Bronze, Retrib Gold, Ironbreaker. Washed back with a mix of Nuln, Agrax, Lahmium, Water 2:1:1:1
Bike’s red paint – (VMC) Black, Burnt red,
(SC) Antares Red
edit: home and some better snaps. well….as better as janky phone photos get 😉
Zayna The Ice Gobliness
Finally finished Zayna from Iter Miniatures. Or rather I have forced myself to call her done and put her down before I keep mucking with dopey details and ruin her!! I’m really happy how she came out and was a real first for me as I’ve never painted a bust before. Total learning experience. I covered some of the paints and techniques used further down on a previous entry in this project blog. Paints were Scale75’s Scalecolour on the skin and the fur as I wanted that nice matte finish. The leather was a mix of AP strong tone and GW browns as I want to have a more shiny rubbed leather finish and the hair was done intially with Scale75 black, VMC dark sea green (or is it blue….) and Schminke titanium white and then glazed back with a mix of Scale Inktensity Black and GW Coelia greenshade again to give a more shiny oily finish to her hair.
