About the Project

I have some very good friends who chipped in to pick up the newest core box for Marvel Crisis Protocol for my birthday present. One of the benefits of celebrating in my Friendly Local Game Store apparently. While I have wanted to paint some of these minis since I first saw them, I haven't been sure about diving into the entire game. Well, two of our group are completely addicted so I will have folks to play the game with, unlike my Burrows and Badgers undertakings. I must admit to being a little overwhelmed by the contents of the Core Set. There are all the rules, templates, counters, dice, terrain, and minis needed to play. Speaking of the minis, there are 13 in the new set and they are wonderful little sculpts, great detail and movement. I think this is going to be fun. Now I just need to avoid diving into the deep end and trying to acquire everything. Anyone who has been following this blog will know I have failed to restrain myself. Despite still not having played the game I have just about every character made and two thirds of them are painted. At least I'm getting some good work done.

Looking back to the original founding X-Men I present Hank McCoy, The Beast.  Granted this is his later form as originally he was just a beefy guy with big prehensile feet.  I’ve always liked this version more so am glad AMG went with it.  I am looking forward the Angel coming out later this year so I can try and field the original team but I would love to see AMG release a version of the team in their original yellow and black costumes.

I haven’t yet decided on what he should be reading but when I do I’ll revisit him and add details.  Right now I am leaning toward comic book pages or Belle from Beauty and the Beast.

As I don’t foresee a lot of MCP games in my near future, let us return to painted minis.  Bishop is finished and looking rather dynamic. Not happy with how his face photographed so will have to rectify that next time I set up the lights and camera.

The last evening of the con found several people wanting g to learn the game.  Each person picked a character/mini they liked and got the appropriate character card.  There were enough of them make a side so I set up the X-Men for myself and any stragglers that showed up after we started.  It was just an excuse to try put different powers and show folks the basics.  Being the last game on Sunday meant folks were tired and not thinking too clearly but we did get in two full turns with characters going down on both sides.  I think next time I will set up two teams and divide each in half so the beginners can play doubles.

I have come to the conclusion that I need 2-4 of the MCP Apartment buildings but can’t pay the retail price. So I have a new quest- Find MCP terrain at a good price.

Another founding member and only female hero (until Giant Size X-Men 1 and the introduction of Storm) Jean Grey in painted and ready to put her telekinesis to work.  She is arguably one of the X-Men’s most powerful members and I applaud her for dropping the “Marvel Girl” moniker. Now that I have a slight understanding of how this game works, I am so looking forward to seeing her on the table.

Met up with old and new friends at PacifiCon Game Convention in Santa Clara, California this weekend.  A couple of us were eager to play MCP and one of my friends knows how so tutored two of us in a starer game.  As some may have noticed, I have collected and completed a few characters and terrain as well as terrain tiles so I had plenty to kit us both out and set up a pretty table.  The “GM” picked a couple Objective cards for us and we each built a team worth 17 Threat Level.  I just picked minis I loved painting and was eager to get on the table.  It just worked out that every one of them was in the Avengers Affiliation.  My opponent chose all Brotherhood characters so we had two thematic teams.

At the end of Turn Four, I had two characters 1-2 points from Dead and the other three were 1-3 points from being dazed. I was able to move Steve onto the objective Quicksilver had scored in the previous round while the speedster was able to grab a cube AND reach the fourth and uncontested objective. Magneto blasted the heck out of him but between my re-rolls and his poor attack rolls meant Pietro Maximoff had one wound left at the time of scoring. As he was the only character on the Extremis he scored that. He was also carrying a Cosmic Cube fragment scoring the winning point. The Cube then caused him to lose one wound (as they do at the end of the scoring) which was his final wound. Quicksilver was killed by the power cosmic but secured a victory in my first ever MCP game. Sticking with my X-Men theme, I finished working on Rogue.  A great character in the comics and movies as well as a great pose in the mini.  Easy assembly and painting was straight forward.  I am very fond of these base covers that are showing up more and more with the newer kits.  I love the theme of Sentinel wreckage and parts with this team.

The third possible leader of the X-Men affiliation is Storm, Ororo Munroe, and she seems amazing.  Giving every team member in range a cover bonus is awesome.  She is also one of those wonderful poses that looks great but is fiddly to assemble (oh so fiddly) and a challenge to paint.  Yes, I know I could decrease the painting challenge by working in sub-assemblies but I just love building the kits first.

Cyclops, also known as Scott Summers, goes all the way back to the creation of the team by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and was the Field Commander for the team.  I like the 90s version with his hair exposed and love that AMG includes both heads so players can choose their preference.
