Games Workshop Preview New Warhammer Board Games
July 10, 2026 by brennon
Games Workshop previewed some more Warhammer-themed "board games" coming out, focused on Warhammer 40,000 and a little something for Middle-earth as well. We start with a board game based on a mobile game, which is also based on a miniatures game...yep.
Tacticus: The Miniatures Game // Warhammer 40,000
Tacticus has been designed as a quick-fire duelling game between two teams. In this case, the Space Marines and the Death Guard. The rules have been designed to be easy to learn and the miniatures are all push-fit. You have a full companion booklet to lead you through and getting this also unlocks Veteran Sergeant Ramus for the first time in the mobile game.
Whilst this seems weird, the little board games from Games Workshop are usually quite fun if inevitably throwaway experiences. As seems to be standard now, you won't be surprised to learn that this is going to be available in the United States in Target, followed by Germany and Australia but that's it.
If that didn't get you excited for Warhammer 40,000, then there will also be a Beginner Set coming out to the same regions.

This is like the Introductory Set that will be available worldwide but without the paints that you would have got in that set. Otherwise, it seems to be functionally the same and it just means it will most likely be available in more places other than Games Workshop stores.
It comes with twelve push-fit miniatures for your Space Marines and Orks plus an introductory booklet, range ruler, dice, play mat and pop-out card terrain. I really do like the card terrain. We need more of that.
Last but not least, Battle In Balin's Tomb returns for Middle-earth fans.

I have this and it's great fun. One player takes control of the plastic Fellowship set whilst another controls the Moria Goblins and a Cave Troll, again from the old plastic set. It's a nice slice of Middle-earth on the tabletop and the mechanics are easy enough for you to get your head around with a friend.
As mentioned above, these games will be available in the United States, Germany and Australia later this year.
Could you be tempted by one of these small boxed game options?

I’m… underwhelmed. But I see a place for them for especially young/new gamers to play.
