Call me a conspiracy theorist but I dont think its actually in GWs best interest to release a set of rules that are really good, if they did then noone would buy the newest edition every 3 years.

@zoidpinhead Gates of Antarez (sp?). That was Bolt Action in a Sci Fi setting IIRC.
That definitely could have been a great system for an alternative 40k.
I think there was a Star Wars themed variant made by the community, wasn’t there ?

// That would be boring in my book. No, I feel the best would be just to run with the setting from 2nd and 3rd
// and ignore all “future” stuff. [When did TAU arrive? 5th?]
    @sundancer
Chaos Spacemarines as they are are boring. They’re just regular spacemarines with more spikey bits that are supposed to be ‘more evil’ than the regular ones.
You got the red ones who like close combat.
The ones that favour the use of space wizards.
The green sickly ones that look like they borrowed their armour from the scrap yard.
And there’s the purple ones with their leather fetish …

Chaos as a faction should lean into what the (original) Realms of Chaos books did. We need random mutations and the chance for champions to become chaos spawn or demon princes.

That’s why I want regular ‘space marines’ feel like the elites they are in the lore.
Give horde armies like Orks and Imperial guard some sort of re-spawn mechanic that allows them to bring in extra troops.
Asymmetric objectives that allow players to play to the strengths of their armies instead of forcing them to do stuff their faction never was designed to do.

Factions should be more unique and less cookie cutter copies of each other with needlessly complicated unique gadgets that add ‘flavour’ at the cost of … well everything if you value your sanity.

But above all … keep the rules simple and logical.
None of that bs with regular troops having more than a single unique special rule outside of their faction/race capabilities.

@solar I’d say it is more or less a fact that GW sells miniatures with games attached. Everything is set up to bleed the customers for every penny. ‘Old World’ happened because they smelled money. It didn’t happen because they wanted to create a good thing.
Same reason why Blizzard is doing that classic but not quite version of World of Warcraft.
We cannot and should not expect anything good to come from companies at that scale, except as a happy accident.
That’s why they are doomed to repeat the same thing over and over again because they don’t understand why the thing they made was successful at all. It’s also why a lot of companies are some kind of twisted cargo cult. None of them really know or understand why stuff works and sells.

Giant artillery and waves of endless cheap hordes of infantry?  Gotta be ‘Nids.

There is Kill Team but I wish I could just use my own minatures rather than having to buy a kill team. They do have an expansion Kill Team Nemisis to make your own …in a manner but I wish it was less established team based. I like alternate activations .
