Finished Base, Skin and Cloth on the Blade Coven
So I came to the most challenging part of the project… painting fair skin. I did a lot of research and found that Kislev Flesh and Pallid Wych Flesh are the most common paints used. But another thing I know with painting female fleshtones is that you do not want a harsh contrast so using washes was out of the question.
In the end I settled on the following:
Fair Skin
Using several thin layers of Citadel Kislev Flesh on a basecoat of a white primer gets the initial starting point.
Use a 50/50 mixture of Citadel Kislev Flesh and Citadel Pallid Wych Flesh to leave the Citadel Kislev Flesh in the recesses.
Finally highlighting raised areas of the skin use a 2 part to 1 part mixture of Citadel Pallid Wych Flesh and Citadel Kislev Flesh.
Red Corsets/Robes
Build up Citadel Khorne Red over several thin layers.
Use a 50/50 mixture of Citadel Nuln Oil and Citadel Carroburg Crimson diluted partially with water. I ended up using about equal parts of water and each wash paint.
Tidy up the raised areas with Citadel Khorne Red
Highlight the edges of the robes and corsets with Citadel Wild Rider Red.
Vines
Being very careful build up Citadel Loren Forest on the each of the vines.
Highlight the raised bits of the vines with a 2 part to 1 part mixture of Citadel Loren Forest and Citadel Screaming Skull.
Wood
Base the wood with a 2 part to 1 part mixture of Citadel Gorthor Brown and Citadel Dryad Bark.
Wash with Citadel Agrax Earthshade.
Highlight up the edges with a 4 part to 2 part to 1 part mixture of Citadel Gorthor Brown, Citadel Dryad Bark and Citadel Screaming Skull.
Finally on the sharpest edges use a 2 part to 1 part mixture of Citadel Gorthor Brown and Citadel Screaming Skull
Starting the Blade Coven
I started painting the Blade Coven over the weekend. The first step was to come up a painting scheme and the Warhmmer TV video of How to Paint – Morgwaeth’s Blade Coven served as most of the inspiration.
I started with the hair and the base as you can see from the images below.
Blue Hair
Base the hair with Citadel Corax White
Wash with 2 parts Citadel Contrast Medium to 1 part Citadel Contrast Aethermatic Blue
Drybrush the hair with Citadel Corax White
Drybrush lightly the hair with Citadel White Scar
Pink Hair
Base the hair with Citadel Corax White
Wash with 2 parts Citadel Contrast Medium to 1 part Citadel Contrast Magos Purple
Drybrush the hair with Citadel Corax White
Drybrush lightly the hair with Citadel White Scar
Bases
Base the whole base with a 50-50 mix of Citadel Zandri Dust and Citadel Rakarth Flesh
Wash the whole base with a 1-1-1 mix of Citadel Lahmian Medium, Water and Citadel Agrax Earthshade
For the dirt apply a second wash of the above mixture
For the rocks only highlight them with a 50-50 mixture of Citadel Zandri Dust and Citadel Rakarth Flesh
For the rocks only highlight them with a 50-50 mixture of Citadel Zandri Dust and Citadel Screaming Skull
For the skulls highlight with Citadel Ushabti Bone and a fine/edge highlight of Citadel Screaming Skull
New Warbands!
I recently splurged and got two new Warbands! I have always loved the look of the Daughters of Khaine but didn’t want to collect a full army. Morgwaeth’s Blade Coven gave me the perfect opportunity to finally collect and paint some.
Additionally I decided to pick up Steelheart’s Champions at the same time. Just because…

Lady Harrow;s Mournflight
I started out by painting Lady Harrow’s Mournflight. The first step was to undercoat the miniatures with Corax White.
Following the undercoat a wash of Nihilakh Oxide would provide the ghostly glow.
Finally once wash was dry I generously drybrushed the miniatures with Ulthuan Grey and followed that up with a lighter drybrush of White Scar.
I think for the arms and skulls I am going to utilize the same colors but use a layering and highlighting technique rather than a drybrush.
The Project Begins
I couldn’t resist jumping in on Warhammer Underworlds, especially after being inspired by a Warhammer TV painting video. Back in 2016 I saw this video walking through painting spirit hosts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzjJqNV4Ei0
I loved the color scheme and wanted to paint some undead but I didn’t have anything…
Four years later Warhammer Underworlds gave me that opportunity to collect some ghostly undead without going all in on Age of Sigmar. So my project begins!
