About the Project

So I mentioned on stream some time back that I'm playing 3rd Edition 40k with a friend and would like to boost my 24 Tyranid models from the "Battle For Macragge" box with some more cheap plastic to get to 750 points and see how they behave against Dark Eldar. And the community came through.

Metals assemble!

One piece metals are a dream.

Multiple piece metals can be a nightmare XD

My fingers are covered in superglue but not stuck together. But they all went together in the end though the wings of the gargoyles really are… well, get yourself some and see what you get XD

Metals assemble!

The gargoyles are on their stands now and one of the guards is on his 40mm. The other one will be based once the order with the magnets and the base arrives XD

Next up: paint everything or maybe even do bases? Or should I keep black bases?

Final count

After tonight’s stream I finally build the Tyranids from the Battle for Macragge box. Took me only 22 years.

Final count for my ‘nid army is currently:

  • 28 Genestealers
  • 10 Spore Mines
  • 28 Termagants
  • 8 Gargoyles
  • 8 Hormagaunts
  • 2 Tyranid Guards
  • 3 Tyranid Warriors
  • 1 Hyve Tyrant
  • 1 Thornback Carnifex

According to the army builder site newrecruit that’s almost 1400 points in 3rd edition values.

Still need to reassemble the metal minis.

New tools arrived! Dental pics and Oyumaru (not pictured)

Tools!Tools!

With new tools more work can be done. Filled some gaps with milliput and tried my hand had recasting missing parts with #oyumaru and milliput. Hopefully I mixed it good enough so that it will cure fully. Because the first batch of mixed putty (that one used for the casting) I mixed directly. Not realising that the brown part had gone hard a bit. The second batch (used to fill the gaps) I first gave the individual components a good squeeze before I combined them. Came out much softer. Time will tell. If the casting does not cure I need to mix some more.

Plastics - the lesser material

Another step for the #OTTSpringClean26 challenge. All plastic cleaned up and back on bases. I am missing one pair of arms from a Genestealer which I will reproduce from my Battle For Macragge box. I’m also missing a leg which will be more work to reproduce. For some reason the previous owner chose to leave two pairs of arms from the warriors but I actually like the look so the empty arm sockets will be filled with putty. Biggest project will be the big guy in the back. So much badly aligned parts. Tried to tear them apart and broke some. More putty work. Also I am missing a 28mm base and a 40mm base. Nothing we can’t handle 😉

Not sure what’s gotten into me but today I ordered some Oyumaru to replace the missing arm of one of the old genestealers and disassembled the metal tyranids even further.

I didn’t know that the hive tyrant’s upper body came in 4 parts (head, three pieces of torso) and the lower body came in three parts. And because I was “at it” I cracked every superglue link.

After that I started removing mold lines, old glue and greenstuff and did a lot of dry fitting. And since now I can get into all the nocks and crannies they all go back into The Soup[tm] for some more cleaning.

Send help?

So yeah. I bought some cheap dental tools from ebay and filters for paints so that I can pick clean the recesses on the minis and “clean” the isopropanol.

Need to look for my small brass wire brush for my not-Dremel for some deep cleaning. Some of the flying beasts also need to get back in to deep freeze for some time and some back into iso for more cleaning.

I might getting to anal perfectionist about this but this is me. *shrugs*

Scrubbing!

So after *checks calendar* more then a month soaking in isopropanol it was time for a final hard scrub and a rinse.

All the scrubbed ones set out on the porch to dry in the sun. A few of the winged creatures went into the freezer to reattach the wings. Worked on some models. Not on all. By the looks the previous owner used superglue and a bad mixed version of greenstuff. (You can still tell some yellow bits apart from the green)

There is some more work needed to be done. I might need to invest into metal pics. Also somehow a pair of arms went missing. Hopefully that turns up again XD

Because the ‘nids are a child of their time the paint is on there rather thick. So repainting isn’t really a good idea.

But I have a solution: Alcohol! *badum* *tiss*

Fresh in the pool!Fresh in the pool!

After two days of soaking and a good scrub we are here:

Soup of the day! There is a fly(er) in my soup!Soup of the day! There is a fly(er) in my soup!

I’ll let them soak a bit longer and then give them a good rinse. If possible I will disassemble some of the metal minis (especially the flyers) because they are put together rather… bad. A lot of CA glue, greenstuff or similar things. And a butt-load of moldlines to get rid of.
