About the Project

This is a terrain project... and painting project. I bought some tiles to use in Marvel Crisis Protocol and I have just weakened and ordered the MCP X-Men Starter (which I had to order from america)... The old is some proxy miniatures that I bought some time ago from Etsy along with some scatter terrain from Walking Dead. How long it will take to complete is unclear and I started work on the project before I took any photos... so the first images will be part way through the project.

Priming The Sentinels

Had a can of TT Combat primer from a mystery box… Scourge Purple it said.

I figured it might work. Looks a bit dull to me, but it’s a start. I may be resorting to my airbrush to go over the dark primer. Or possible speed/contrast paints.

Still trying to find the right purple which is why there are various shades of it on the arms and legs (tried 10 shades so far and not found one I like).

The hands are not attached jet as I primed them silver and added an orange blob to the middle of the palm as potential colour for their blasters.

In the end I decided that partial assembly was not helping the painting and if anything it was slowling be down, so they are assembled now… although not attached to the base so I can reach some of the less accessible bits.

Sentinel Assembly - MK4

Not as many spare parts with the MK4’s. No options for damaged head, or chestplate which is a little disappointing. There are four arms and six hands per sentinel however, so that’s something to work with.

And so the assembly comes to an end… for the moment…

Next I need to prime everything and start picking colours.

Sentinel Assembly - Cassandra and Prime

Started with Cassandra Nova and she was a simple build. Still don’t like her magic mushroom.

Sentinel Prime Mk4 has some good options. Two heads (one damaged, one undamaged), alternate chest plate (damaged or undamaged), four arms and six hands.

Although I could magnetise them, I think I would rather keep all the spares as scatter terrain, or basing material.

Next on assembly line will be the Sentinel Faction.

Cassandra Nova looks simple enough.

There are two MK4 Sentinels and a MK 4 Prime.

It will be much easier to paint the Sentinels in pieces, so I plan to build the limbs, heads and bases then paint them before final assembly.

The Brotherhood Get Together

Rogue and Gambit are also considered part of the Brotherhood, so they can be on both teams meaning that the box contains 4 to 6 members of each team.

The switch to plastic glue made life a lot easier and in general the build of the Brotherhood was easier than the X-Men.

Sabretooth is one of the easier builds.

Toad’s tongue I can’t see lasting for long and it might break during painting unless I am really careful. No big deal if it does as I will just assume he’s eating something gross he spotted on the wall he rests on. Both feet and a hand are part of the wall and will be used to attach him.

Mystique is a rather boring pose. She was one of the simplest to assemble.

And finally we have Magneto. Not as bad to assemble as I thought he may be with that big cloak. He attaches to the girders located below his mini and that will be glued to the base. The metal to his right I’m not sure where that goes exactly on his back, but I’ll worry about they when I’ve painted as it will be easier to paint the cloak and metal separately. The other two bits to the right are used as part of his powers and have their own bases.

So that’s the X-Men Starter assembled.

Mildly Irritable Update

I was under the impression that plastic glue would not work with MCP.

According to the internet… it does work… but superglue needed to attach them to the bases.

So all that fiddling and swearing using superglue was unnecessary trauma.

I am currently testing the plastic glue. If it works well then I guess the Brotherhood Of Not Very Nice Mutants will be easier to assemble.

The Sentinels have arrived and joined the assembly line.

Cassandra Nova I’m not as bothered about… Evil Female Xavier Clone is from after I stopped reading Marvel Comics and don’t really like the idea.

If I use the Sentinels in battle I might have them allied with Magneto after he’s reprogrammed them to kill humans.

Gambit… tricksy little X-Man and tricksy little build. Painting his empowered cards is going to be a challenge I think… making it look suitably explosive.

Next was Beast. Two options on him. Goggles or no goggles. Book in hand or clenched fist. I went for Goggles on and clenched fist. His feet are part of the terrain base of girders and I’ve left him footless for now to facilitate painting. Probably the second easiest build so far.

And finally… Wolverine. Lots of parts that feel as if not well glued will snap apart in play. The irony of the indestructible adamantium skeleton and an all too breakable plastic miniature. Yet another fiddly build. There was a head option… the original mask with the big triangles or the wild hair. I chose hairy.

I’m saving the Brotherhood for another time.
