Renowned Warhammer Artist, John Blanche, Passes Away
June 3, 2026 by brennon
Trish Carden, a renowned sculptor and artist from the hobby world and friend of John Blanche, announced today that the man behind the essence of Grimdark and Blanchitsu passed away a few days ago.
Trish announced that John Blanche's wife, Lin, asked her to release news of his passing...
"John was an inspirational artist, devoted to his family and a good friend to many. Always generous with his time and knowledge, he was very well loved by all who knew and worked with him. He’ll be hugely missed. The world of Warhammer was brought to life by his vision of the grimdark setting and I know his art meant a lot to so many of you. He leaves behind an enormous legacy that has enriched many people’s lives. The family will say goodbye to John privately but there will be a get-together in the future for everyone to celebrate John’s life."
As Trish mentioned in her post, Blanche was a massive influence on the worlds of Warhammer and how they developed over the years. His artwork was the basis for the building blocks of Warhammer 40,000, Warhammer Fantasy Battles and even Warhammer Age of Sigmar. I'm sure, regardless of whether or not you liked his style, you'll have a piece that you remember.
I thought I'd share one of my favourite pieces from him above. When I saw this, I knew I wanted to start a Black Templar army and so I got drawn into the world of Warhammer 40,000.
In addition to his work on the worlds of Warhammer, he has also had an influence on all manner of other games and he was just seeing one of his passion projects come to life in the form of En Garde. I'm sure that his influence will still be found within the wargaming world and beyond for many, many years to come. It also seems like a good day to watch the documentary film, The Grim & the Dark, where Blanche featured heavily.
The Grim & the Dark
It's a sad day for Grimdark fans indeed.
What was the first John Blanche art piece that you remember?

Sad news.
For some reason the YouTube link doesn’t work for me but this one does: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cA4Y2qcQY4A
Might be something about it being age-gated. Just says to open it on YouTube for me but aye – well worth watching it.
I clinked the “Watch on YouTube” link…
And got, in the YouTube tab that opened in response:
“Video unavailable
The uploader has not made this video available in your country”
FYI: I’m in New Zealand.
Got that from Sundancers link as well.
Ah that’s a shame
Try searching “The Grim & the Dark” on YouTube. I’m sure it’ll pop up
I did, couldn’t find a version available in my country,
I don’t use a VPN, and don’t care to.
Just got a message of it not being available on the mobile browser
Doesn’t work for me, either. I’m not downloading the app. I have too many apps.
I just had this copy recommended by YouTube, I believe it is on the makers of the documentary, Trademark Films .

Sad news indeed.
Truly sad news, a legend and a vital influence in early Warhammer gone.
Will be a loss, his artwork featuring huge battles showing everything from a guardsman to a titan are a massive reason I got into the hobby.
Sad news, I am not big into GW these days but in the late 1980s and early 1990s I was very much a GW person and his artwork was always inspiring.
Very sad news. A genuine great of the hobby and one of the few within our sphere whose work was strong enough to receive recognition outside the hobby.
RIP John. Your art work is still an inspiration.
I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of John Blanche.
His unique vision and extraordinary artwork shaped not only Games Workshop, but the entire miniature wargaming hobby. His influence can be seen in countless armies, stories, and imaginations around the world. The dark, gothic aesthetic he created became an inseparable part of Warhammer and inspired generations of hobbyists, artists, and gamers.
I had the privilege of meeting him once in Nottingham in the early 2000s, and it remains a cherished memory. To have met someone whose work had such a profound impact on a hobby I love was a genuine honor.
The miniature world has lost one of its true legends. His art, creativity, and imagination will continue to inspire for years to come.
Rest in peace, John Blanche. You will be greatly missed.
RIP a true legend, he will live on through the art of so many. I am glad he recieved wider recognition in these last few years.
Thoughts and condolenses to all his friends and family
This is a legacy that will sound for as long as the company makes the games. He did good work
Such sad news. I loved his artwork, it really drew you into the lore of the grim dark future, especially one of my favourite pieces of art, the picture of the Emperor himself on the Golden Throne.
He will be missed greatly by all wargaming fans, young and old.
Rest in peace.
Sad News….
A very sad loss. Many happy memories of trawling through the 3rd edition WHFB rulebook as a kid and seeing his art. His impact may be far greater than many realise.
A great loss to wargaming but his influence will live on in the miniatures and art he inspired.
The man, the myth, the legend. Sad day in the art world.
Sad day in the whole world. So much influence in how GW came to be imagined.
With John now and Paul Sawyer last year, I am thinking of my own mortality. I guess when one reaches a certain age, it’s more “real”.
RIP John. My deepest condolences to all his loved ones. His artwork is the first reason I fell in love with 40K.
Very sad, but grateful for all that John put into the world, he’s been an inspiration and his work is a joy to behold.
Paul Hicks mentioning his favourite John Blanche artwork on FB made me think about my own.
For me, it has always been the Ecclesiarchy illustration from Warhammer 40,000.
Every time I looked at it, I discovered something new. The central figure is magnificent, but it is the incredible detail in the background—the pilgrims, the architecture, the strange faces and symbols—that kept drawing my eye back again and again.
What always struck me was how much it reminded me of Hieronymus Bosch. Not in imitation, but in spirit. Like Bosch, Blanche created worlds that felt vast, unsettling, sacred, grotesque, and utterly alive. There was always another story hidden in the shadows, another detail waiting to be discovered.
That was John Blanche’s gift. He didn’t just illustrate a setting—he made you believe there was an entire universe beyond the edge of the picture.
It is a sad day for the hobby. His work shaped the imagination of generations of gamers, painters, and artists, and his influence will remain visible every time we open a Warhammer book or place a miniature on the table.
Thank you for the inspiration, John. You will be deeply missed.
Nice memories @agis
Sad News.
He is the father of the Grimdark but for me it was the use of colour and style in the art that I loved and often gets overlooked. Grimdark was the style but it never was just throwning dark washes over everything. It you look at his early work when he used colour it was the contrast with zorn palette, the bright reds, warm oranges. These would make up the backgrounds, often very detailed. You would look at the picture over and over again spotting another character and wondering what role they had.
I first encountered his artwork on the cover of Figthing Fantasy but little did I know then the artist behind them. Even during the early years of 40k I would pour over the artwork in the books with little knowledge of the artist. Out of all the artwork the Sister of Battle with the Ecclesiarchy in the background is my favourite.
While is passing is very sad he has left a vast amount of artwork for us to enjoy and inspire us in our own.
It’s very sad news. But he was present and relevant and appreciated up until the last and we all still enjoy his work. Lots of older people don’t get the same chance.
Time to paint something red ochre black and white, or use his paints.
The world has lost a fabulous man off the gaming world which will be very difficult to replace any time soon R.I.P. JOHN 🫡👍🫡
