I was a bit disapointed that they shared the most recent white dwaves first in the vault (all of 2020), but that is more because I was hoping to go reread the mags of my youth.
@tobymagill I think that is possibly more down to the fact, that online magazines need to be in a digital readable format and I doubt the WD of days past are anywhere close to that if digitally archived at all. But to stay fair they did say “recent WD” in the ad if I remember correctly.
All in all it looks to me like: if you use the Apps already it’s more bang for the buck and if you don’t there is no real reason to subscribe unless you are a G’Wullu glutton 😉
I’d be highly surprised if G’Wullu actually developed and host Warhammer+ directly, they’ll most likely have contracted the development and ongoing support of the platform to a third party, likewise, they are probably utilizing a cloud service such as AWS for the actual hosting of it too if they have any sense, which if done right will allow them the grow the service easily and deliver to any part of the world (they choose).
Why do I say this?
With Europe/US/Australia that’s realistically three data centers that would be needed if they hosted it themselves, that is a huge cost, in equipment and staff and very slow in terms of scaling the service to demand. With a cloud service that’s comparatively easy to set up and scale. You might think “thing on the internet, accessible anywhere” but the likes of streaming video are very much impacted by the distance the data travels, hence why you need more local servers providing the content.
As for contracting out, I don’t remember seeing any significant increase in hiring on the IT side from them, setting this up would have required a significant team across a range of disciplines. Contracting out has a number of advantages, while it might seem expensive (when you see day rates) it’s much lower risk and provides more on-demand access to resources, without needing to maintain an expensive array of staff. Secondly, G’Wullu is not known for paying well, the IT sector is very competitive, hiring and keeping good staff if you don’t pay them well is hard.
I think that what irks me the most is not really that they for some unfathomnable reason have limited which countries get access to the warhammer tv, which is a sizeable chunk of the entire “service”.
It’s that they still have the gall to charge full price for half the service.
Now, I would still have kept my sub if only the vault had something worth it for me, such as white dwarf from last month, or even two months old. or a large collection of older white dwarfs.
Warhammer Visions, while being full of pretty pictures, is not much of a draw I am afraid.
Older codexes, army books and rules for out of print versions and games? PDF printable versions of old paper-chit games like Horus Heresy, Battle for Armageddon or Tyranid Attack? Rulebooks for defunct games like Dark Future, Space Fleet or Man-o-War? (Even just the very first) novels of book series?
Anything even remotely like this (admittedly an old-farts-nostalgia-wet-dream) would likely have kept me subbing for years and would probably have made them extra money when I invariably would go out and buy the rest of the series I like or even inspire me to buy some more of their miniatures. I haven’t really bought alot of those lately.
Now, I could continue shitting on the very lackluster contents of the warhammer vault or the fact that I would need to buy a newer ipad than the one I have to even be able to use the warhammer 40.000 app. But I won’t.
I just cancelled. The value just isn’t there for me.
The email said I would get a refund. Lets hope that is true. Maybe I will try again in a few months time, just to see how much they have actually put in the vault (and also to see if they remove stuff.)
Such a missed opportunity. What a massive disappointment this was.
