Full Steam Punk Ahead – My First Steps into Warmachine

About the Project
I discovered Warmachine at Adepticon 2026. Not that I was not aware of it before, but I never had the opportunity to play the game nor paint the miniatures. So I came home with ta two player starter set and the hardcover rulebook. Little did I know that the 'quick start' portion of the rulebook uses different faction than the current starter set, which lead me to acquire a Cygnar Hellslingers Command Cadre and a Khador SKS-6 Command Cadre, which would allow me to follow along the quickstart battle as well as replicate my Adepticon experience. The stage was set for my first home Warmachine experience.

Khador SKS-6 Command Cadre
In my quest to duplicate the demo I enjoyed at Adepticon, I acquired the Khador command cadre. It was nice to leave the blue and toes behind and embrace red… I started, as with the previous units, with the character unit, with in this set are named the Hounds. I highly recommend painting the shields separately before assembly.
Next was Sergeant Goran Lazarenko, the Jackal! I really enjoyed the dynamic pose as well as the option to show the rocket launcher in action, even though the assembly was a bit finecky.
Next was my warcaster Kapitan Zahara Vilkul (I love that Warmachine gives names to all the miniatures , as well as backstory). I positively hated assembling the miniature, even thought the end result is quite nice. It reminded me of the most demented GW or Infinity models… So, harm yourself with patience when you build this warcaster (or be more sillfull than I).
An finally, came Razor, this unit Warjack, which was very fun to paint. As usual, paint the shield (if this device can be still called a shield) separately.
Cygnar Hellslingers
I started withe Cygnar command cadre and decided to basically follow box and book art, which I found appealing. Assembling the miniatures was quite an experience and I was thankful for the excellent guide provided by SFG online. Having assembled and painted plethora of Barons War miniature the last siz months, Warmachine miniatures offered a level of complexity I was no longer used to. In the end, the complexity paid off as the resulting miniatures offered an amazing level of detail and dynamic poses. Painting them was equally challenging , as the amount of details required constant attention so as to not forget yet another bandolier or object attached to the miniature.
I first painted the Black 13th which gave me the opportunity to paint different shares of black by marrying the black highlight with brown and green for a variety of shade.
Captain Bastian Falk was next
Then my warcaster, Major Allister Caine
and last but not least, Deuce, our warjack. I strongly advise that you paling the canon separately and attach it afterwward.
