Bought the pdf of the starter set to get things going in my campaign and the adventure is rubbish.
Pretty much a bunch of combat encounters that occur in a pseudo random order based on how badly the players roll the dice.
To make matters worse, the NPC guide is best suited to do the survival rolls, so the players rely on the NPC to succeed. Having an NPC that does the work is bad adventure design.
Spoiler alert…
If you fail the final encounter (or run away as the party are advised to do), your ass is saved by a horde of allies. Again… makes the Soulbound who are supposedly better than most of the NPC’s seem weak and incompetant.
I think “rubbish” is pretty harsh. I had a lot of fun with it and thought the maze of a “dungeon” that you go into was something a bit different.
I also think entirely differently concerning the NPC you mentioned. I found him fun and a good way to guide the players – who could be new to roleplaying. I just had fun with him and it was great when things would go wrong as it helped build a bit of tension between the group and their guide.
As for the spoiler – it’s a starter adventure. Also, I think it shows that whilst you might be powerful warriors of Order, there are some things that are beyond you.
But, different strokes for different folks. Mileage will vary for groups obviously.
I’ve been GM for best part of 40 years and as a starter adventure I found it disappointing and for all those starting GM’s out there I think it would be frustrating… flicking backwards and forwards through the scenario.
The random nature annoyed my players too… so I ended up modifying it.
The C7 adventures for the One Ring (Tales from Wilderland, Bree, etc) were annoying too… so I have come to expect poor adventures from C7, but Modiphius, Wizards and others are not great either.
Which is why I tend to write my own stuff… that way I know everything about the adventure, so I don’t have to look for details regarding NPC’s, plot elements etc.
Looks a interesting game. I would recommend copying the stat game sheet preventing the game’s stats card being damaged by re-use.
Don’t worry – you can just use pencil 😉
that will still damage the card over time Ben.
a poly-pocket an a fine marker pen would be better.?
