Fields of Grey by chesh

We start this week with something a bit different. chesh's Fields of Grey project is a personal one and whilst it doesn't have a lot of miniatures to show off, I think it's important.

Fields of Grey #1 by chesh

By chesh's own admission, they find it hard to focus on building, painting and playing their tabletop games as an autistic hobbyist who is also battling against stress, hyperfocus and executive dysfunction. With that in mind, and how often they stall at the painting stage, chesh has decided to start this project to help them get past the barrier of painting and playing more games rather than feeling like they aren't "doing the hobby properly".

Fields of Grey #2 by chesh

I suppose I should firstly say that everyone approaches the hobby differently and even if you never paint a thing and just do a bit here and there, occasionally playing a game or two, that's your hobby and it's all valid. Always. At the core of what chesh has been doing recently, they have decided that if it's built, it's playable. This is something Gerry has always subscribed to!

Fields of Grey is a project focused on removing the barriers and making the games more accessible. Star Wars: Legion is a game that chesh wants to play but beyond that, Warhammer 40,000, being the simple game that it is, has really drawn the focus of chesh. For example, they have been using the Combat Patrol rules (above) to play out some early fights between Space Marines and Tyranids! Great!

I really liked this breakdown from chesh...

  • This isn’t a painting showcase.
  • It isn’t a competitive meta-analysis.
  • It isn’t a “perfect hobby journey.”
  • It’s someone trying to use the hobby to stay steady during a rough mental health patch.

I think this is a great set of rules to live by and chesh has already delved deeper into this over on the project. I would suggest that anyone struggling in this way with their metal health and looking for an escape into wargaming, this is a great place to start.

Photography Basing by amachan

We start off with something awesome from amachan who has been working away on their Roman army for a while now. The Republican Romans are coming together really nicely but I wanted to focus on one particular element of their project, which I think is something all of us should be doing! Check out this photography base!

Photography Base #1 by amachan

The idea behind this is fairly self-explanatory. This now provides amachan with a base to take photographs of their miniatures. It's a simple concept but it makes for a much more rewarding final moment once this has been finished and the miniatures are ready. Set this up alongside one of the backdrop books by Handiwork Games and you've got a great starting point for some fun photography.

Photography Base #2 by amachan

All of us probably have some wood or plasticard sitting around, which could be turned into a base like this. I would reckon most of us also have access to loads of leftover terrain, bits of sprue and basing material which can be used to make a thematic base as you see here. You could even go a few of these and turn them into a great mini-project to cover Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Historical wargaming, plus everything in between.

Photography Base #3 by amachan

The miniatures in your collection are designed to be photographed in their natural habitat, on the tabletop, en masse, surrounded by terrain and having "fun". So, a base like this removes some of the ick factor that a few of us get when you're painting some miniatures and when you take a picture for social media, it suddenly looks terrible and you can see all the things you've done badly! This helps to level the playing field for folks, which is great.

Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka by soapdodger

Finishing things off this week, we also have some more amazing work by soapdodger on another excellent character from Warhammer 40,000. He has done an excellent job on the Ork of the moment for the game, Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka.

Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka #1 by soapdodger

This miniature took three weeks to finish and was soapdodger having fun painting another of the big main characters from Warhammer 40,000. I love the detail that soapdodger has gone into, working as the professionals do, painting up elements of the miniature to completion before moving on to different sections. It's an approach I've never really used but I think it looks brilliant.

Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka #2 by soapdodger

The new miniature for Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka is excellent and I'm glad that soapdodger put in the time and effort to make him look as good as he has. As soapdodger says in their project, its fun if you like doing freehand work on the likes of hazard stripes and checks.

Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka #3 by soapdodger

The final look of the miniature is brilliant and is one of those projects where I immediately want to go out and start painting Orks. I like that you've got all of the focal points locked in within the painting of the miniature and all the battle damage, which makes the larger sections of the miniature pop. Makari has not been forgotten either and I think the lurid green for his skin is perfect. An excellent companion for use alongside the mighty warboss of warbosses!

What Are You Painting Right Now?

Every week, we’re absolutely blown away by the incredible topics that are put into the Projects; it’s getting more difficult to choose Community Spotlights! We love your work and we hope to see a lot more of it in the future!

If you fancy getting your hobby fingers out and showing off your newest paint job, terrain piece or even greatest gaming achievement, we want to know about it! We don’t mind if you’re a newcomer to painting or a veteran of the brush; everything you do inspires us to create more and more content together!

What do you think of the entries this week?
