About the Project

Have long been intrigued by the system and setting for Wolsung by MicroArts. Once I received a Starter Club for my birthday I knew it was time to learn the game and paint some great figures. This project blog is to chart both my creative endeavors as well as my journey into learning how to play. In addition to MicroArts' lovely minis I will be adding in anything I think fits the genre of what I am building. Might even build some terrain...

I didn’t notice the Two Face like appearance of this guy until I saw him up close and personal.  He has the ability to burn wounds to make his Fight and Reflex better so I am guessing that his messed up face represents that.  Quick paint job but he does look intimidating.

A Phoenix Rises in Shadows Gate

Been a while since I worked on my Wolsung collection even though I have been quietly collecting minis from the remaining three gangs.  I figure I might as well have a complete collection so I can set up a game in isolation or teach newbies once this ends.  Okay, I just like painting these and love the aesthetic of it all so why stifle my creativity.  The Lockdown Leisure League has really inspired me to get back to the painting table.

Phoenix is a great figure with lots of movement and seemed a good place to start my Triad gang.  I first painted his skin a yellow orange to match the art on the cards and book but thought he looked way too much like a 1930’s Buck Rogers villain and not much like an orc.  Maybe it’s the grognard in me but I like my orcs and goblins to sport a bit of green in their pigmentation so started over with a green base and built up to a pale yellow green.  While not perfect, I do think it looks a lot better than my first attempt.

Isolation Gaming

In the world from before Isolation, Labor Day weekend was traditionally when my friends and I would meet at a huge game convention in Santa Clara, California.  It is also where @necron099 and I started playing Wolsung and is our tradition to play at least one game of it over the weekend.  “It isn’t a successful PacifiCon unless we play Wolsung” has become our motto.  Being Gaming Grognards of firm stuff we weren’t about to let something like an international health crisis interfere with our traditions.  Longtime friend and OTT member @aronbc was finally overcome by his curiosity and joined us this year.

Both necron099 and I have fairly good Steampunk mini and terrain collections so either one of us could set a table up.  He is more on the ball with technology so he hosted the game and acted as referee.  He just used his cell phone to stream the table to Discord and we dealt cards and rolled dice on Roll20 mostly out of habit as we use the site for our weekly RPG as well. Things worked fairly well with the only big glitch being aronbc losing his power (we are having blackouts to match the raging fires here in California right now) but he followed progress on his cell phone while necron099 played out the last turn for him.

As necron099 has a beautifully painted Pneumabooth, he chose that scenario and set up a table. So we would be trying to hold onto the “package” until the end of turn three as well as trying to kill each other. The character cards are handy, have the most up to date stats on them and fortunately MicroArts has them available for download.  Another bit of their great customer service. I ran two heroes from the Inventors Club while aronbc went with the criminal Triad.

Another non-MicroArts mini that will work wonderfully for roleplaying.  She has enough spunk to go with that golemic arm and a sword to get her point across.  Close up pictures reveal all kinds of errors (as well as dust stuck to the mins) that I might have to go back and touch up one day in the future.  For now I am calling her finished and will add her to my Wolsung collection.

Got a figure from Bombshell Babes and another from Stonehaven minis that both seem good fits for our role playing efforts.  They would fit in well with Wolsung teams as well but mostly they were fun to paint.

I’ve now finished painting the last member of my Alven Yard squad.  This is also the last team or gang I have for Wolsung as well.  I would say that this project was reaching an end except I love the aesthetic, models, and terrain kits.  I have a feeling that I will be making more buildings as well as finding more miniatures for our role-playing efforts.

The first gallery is of Dirty Harold a tough, no nonsense elf dectective.  Next is Gerat, the dwarf detective with a golem body that is pretty much Inspector Gadget.  Then come the constables starting with an elf, then the troll, the human, and finally the halfling.  I like how they have tea and donuts.

A friend had given me several sets of lamp posts from the Batman Miniatures Game as he thought, rightly so, that they would fit in well with my collection. I must admit that the resin they are cast in doesn’t respond to the hot water trick that well and these are as straight as I could get them.  The way I see it, in a city full of steam powered monstrosities, rampaging ogres, and strange vehicles it’s a miracle any lamp posts are left standing at all.

I’ve had this strange Armorcast resin bit bouncing around my collection for literally decades but only recently gave it another look and thought it would make an excellent objective point.  It even looks like something those mad inventors would come up with.  Besides, being about the same size as the Pneuma Booth it will provide good cover.

A few of these look like Lady Quimby bounced her monocycle off of them.A few of these look like Lady Quimby bounced her monocycle off of them.

I’ve been working on a couple of non-MicroArts steam punk dwarfs.  They will make good RPG characters and NPCs but I can also see using them as another pair of Halfling Workers in my Scylla gang.  I am especially fond of the guy holding a wrench as he looks like he is conversing with that squirrel.

The Gallery is of the various Work in Progress shots while the singles are of the finished minis.
