Community Spotlight: Sci-Fi Adventures, Undead Dwarfs & 1490 Doom Quests
July 1, 2026 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We’ll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week…
…always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Five Parsecs From Home by hutch
One of the big projects being worked on in the project system at the moment is hutch's project looking at Five Parsecs At Home. This game does seem like a darling of the wargaming world at the moment and hutch has been spending a lot of time really digging into the game and the wargaming experience that it throws up from a solo perspective.
hutch has plunged all sorts of work into getting this project ready for some games. There is a lot of lore on the world that they're playing in and all of the different characters that they've produced that represent their crew have in-depth backgrounds and lore, which expands the storytelling potential! I also think that all of the miniatures that hutch has painted look brilliant.
hutch has done a nice job of putting together little tips and hints here and there as to how the miniatures were painted. The main idea has been getting these miniatures painted quickly so that hutch can play some games, which I like. I think the robot above looks amazing for example, especially with that stunning orange scheme!
As well as showcasing the world and the painting of the miniatures, hutch has also been showing off all of the games that they've played so far as well.
You can follow along with the gameplay from hutch and see how the game plays and also what he thinks about it. I also really like the photography from hutch showing off the games in play. They look stunning and really give off a fun vibe about the game. If you've been thinking about Five Parsecs From Home, this would be a good primer.
Undead Dwarfs by minigiant
Next up, we're having a look at the world of minigiant in the world of Warhammer: Fantasy Battles. They have stepped into the province of Solland and painted up a really awesome undead force with a beardy theme, which will look stunning when it's completed.
The Dwarf Vampire Varrik von Nachthall has set about making sure that ancient grudges don't lie unresolved and so many of the Dwarfs have been resurrected from the towns and villages, the valleys and mountains, in order to become part of his army that now seeks to write some wrongs. The fellow above looks superb and has this excellent Oldhammer vibe to him.
The rest of the army so far includes these Imperial Dwarfs armed with spears, who are made from classic Warhammer Imperial Dwarfs alongside a skull pack and then all of them have been painted in the yellow and white of Solland.
minigiant has also put a lot of information into the project about turning these miniatures into the warriors of Solland. You can find some guides to painting them and a bit more of the background for this army that minigiant is currently dreaming up. I can't wait to see what they do as the army comes together.
1490 Doom by necron099
Last but not least, we're having a look at the weird world of 1490 Doom. necron99 was able to meet the folks behind the game, learning about the mechanics and was drawn into giving it a go. This started with them picking up some Buer Games metal figures from Kubla Con.
The idea behind these miniatures was to get them ready for the game, which is a unique concept in of itself, but also getting them done using the John Blanche paints and a few classic techniques that would suit the Grimdark and "28 Mag" feel of 1490 Doom. Heavy, grim, quick and easy.
I think the miniatures look brilliant, especially with the little touches like the brightly coloured mask for this fellow above. As necron99 mentioned in their post, the idea here was to get across some seriously cool "Real Metallic Metal". I think it works nicely and serves as a good homage to John Blanche himself.
The wildest of the miniatures is this fellow, The Bee Keeper.
I think this looks wild. I love how utterly wild the miniatures from 1490 Doom look and it sets up the quirky world that they have produced. It will be brilliant to see necron99 having some fun with this game and building a big, vertical board for playing the game.
What Are You Painting Right Now?
Every week, we’re absolutely blown away by the incredible topics that are put into the Projects; it’s getting more difficult to choose Community Spotlights! We love your work and we hope to see a lot more of it in the future!
If you fancy getting your hobby fingers out and showing off your newest paint job, terrain piece or even greatest gaming achievement, we want to know about it! We don’t mind if you’re a newcomer to painting or a veteran of the brush; everything you do inspires us to create more and more content together!
What do you think of the entries this week?

Three fun projects! @hutch your 5 Parsecs is KILLER!
All three are great, and I really want to try out 1490 Doom; such a cool-looking game.
@hutch – what’s your painting method? That worn, kinda “speckled” look is really cool and effective!
Much bling, such wow. Lovely stuff as usual 🙂
Wonderful projects again. Congratulations to the winners. Well deserved.
Thanks for the Golden Button and congrats to the other beautiful entries picked this week. Loving that messed up Bananas in Pyjamas looking fella, that’s so wrong it has to be right.
To clarify, although 5 Parsecs is a solo game, there are three of us playing it as a co-op, and we’re having an absolute blast with it.
@grantinvanman, Thank you.
@bennythejew, my painting method is a mix of Zenith Highlighting up from a brown undercoat, Speed paints, followed by the Dip method (Slightly modified as I stipple it on) and finished off with the 3-colour palette style of Dallimore. It sounds long-winded, but it really isn’t. I have tried to keep them rough so you will see bits of orange on the robots’ tracks and skin-coloured speed paint on the sleeves of some models where I have just slapped it on. The dip hides a multitude of sins and blends it all… I hope, together.
Thank you so much! More Skeletons next I think
Always surprised by the different painting styles and techniques that result in such a variation in results. Each one exceptional and appropriate for the gaming environment.
Grateful to @hutch for revealing their methods for a quick, but outstanding outcome. Will certainly look to incorporate some of their tricks to try to get me out of what I call my ‘colourful fantasy’ rut.
