Of Oil and Iron – A Salute Discovery

About the Project
Of Oil and Iron had a stand at Salute 53. It's a Dystopian Dieselpunk setting where a terrible smogfall environmental event causes a collapse of society. No nations remain, only a handful of corporations and rebels and mercenaries. Only areas with adequate filtration are safe to breath, like the company housing and in the factories of the corporations. A forever war situation ensues as corporations fight for the world's last resources. Of Oil and Iron feels like a fun game. And the minis are nice. It's a 3d print digital campaign in essence, but Lazerforge are a UK company that print them. I also reached out to the creator of the game and made a printed model purchase as a bit of a one off after Salute.

Terrain test
Just playing with my terrain made so far, and playmat, and a few minis to see if I have enough yet. Getting there. Just need to get the rules learned and a few gaming aids finished off.
Also finished up some of my terrain I see as potential variety in contrast to the industrial type terrain. Want to avoid it getting a bit boring or samey.
They smoke stacks bigger pieces are packaging from a laptop box. I think these pieces slide on either end of the laptop, the smaller pieces folded in to keep it all stable, but I snipped those off and made those modular smaller buildings.
These shorter pieces in a line were from different packaging. I couldn't find a use in 28mm as they were so low, but these suit the 15mm scale and the aesthetic I am looking for. My son said "Tatooine?" when I laid it out... and I'm happy about that. It's got a dessert look, but I was hoping more desolate and uninviting rather than dry and sandy.
Thanking my friend Andy for sharing his bits box 40k bits that have given interesting improvements and details to my terrain. The Pickelhaube MkII Aus B "Emu"
The Pickelhaube MkII Aus B "Emu". The Pickelhaube MkI was a failure... And the Emu was also a failure, but the miniguns were popular with pilots. The anchors for feet gave it stability that the Mk I had issues with... But the heat cost of moving around made for a nasty tradeoff. Being slow, juicy on fuel and low armour made it vulnerable, but if you wander into its front arch the improved firepower and improved optics could be the end of an opposing Light rig.
I am looking at the scenarios and seeing whether these could be items to fight over as great scrap, or have them as an antagonist with a simple AI to upset both players that come close. To represent rogue locals trying to keep their own tiny corner of the world as Corp and Freegear free to be independent on the world's edges. The rules are finalised! Yay!!

Even More Terrain.
I see some of the official terrain and it's seems to have more verticality rather than larger footprints. I still like that these feel thematic in my head canon.
The bits and bobs from 15mm tank sprues really helps tie the buildings to the scale and hide the humble packaging beginnings of the pieces.
I am kinda obsessed with these sensor applicator packaging pieces and just playing around with minor changes with the original theme.
Got access to a friend's 40k bits box to add a bit more interest to my latest batch of terrain features.Automaton fun
I loved the Automatons I saw on the Of Oil and Iron page. I hoped they were being sold at 15mm, but they were 32mm instead. There are no infantry in the game, but I enjoy the aesthetic of this universe so much I put in my order.
The Russian Uniform Vallejo colour is great for British helmets. I used Steel Legion Drab for the equipment/ weapon colours.More terrain.
I wanted some of these to look busier with pipes on top and this seemed to work nicely. Though this industrial stuff is cool I also have some packaging parts I had my eye on for Necromumda. But when I imagine the pieces at 15mm instead they make more sense.
Adobe style buildings made after the Smogfall are durable against acid rain and with some clever air filtration tech makes cheap easy to maintain workshop buildings or temporary shelters when crossing between the more heavily defended safe zones.
Rule plug filtration/ climate control tech and just some fun looking packaging pieces made for a great building. Painted on doors and 15mm track sections for armoured windows elevates it from just packaging. I like the infantry arm attached as an alarm system. I imagine in a dieselpunk WW1 kinda world, where trench rattles were used to signify gas attacks, I imagine a huge bell being rung by a mechanical arm would be a high tech solution in keeping with the world.
