Community Spotlight: Dogs Of War, Duellists & Epic Space Marines
April 29, 2026 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We’ll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week…
…always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Dogs of War by zoidpinhead
We start off this week with a look at the work of zoidpinhead who has been working through their Regiments of Renown and Dogs of War, delving back into a classic army from yesteryear.
This was an excellent haul of different miniatures from Vinted, which is fast becoming a good place to get your hands on miniatures at a fraction of the price that you buy them from eBay and the like. There are some seriously classic miniatures as part of this collection with a neat Oldhammer vibe to them. zoidpinhead is now working to bring a whole host of different miniatures to life for use in some modern wargames.
Whilst these miniatures are going to be great for a spot of Oldhammer, the actual use of these miniatures is to become a new Midgard Heroic Battles force. This gives you an idea as to why zoidpinhead has based these miniatures as they have. They have actually found that they have way more miniatures for a Midgard Heroic Battles force than they needed so it's going to be a bit of pick and choose to see what fits into the force.
There are some brilliant miniatures as part of this collection that hark back to a quirkier time in the worlds of Warhammer, be they in the Grimdark Future or the era of The Old World. For example, there is this brilliant pair of schiltrons which show off some Goblins trying to avoid incoming fire.
If you're tempted by a spot of Oldhammer, make sure to check out the project in more detail. There are some great Regiments of Renown coming as part of this project that will remind you of those classic boxes of metal miniatures that you could never afford back in the day. I had a friend with a Dogs of War army and it was spectacular, if incredibly expensive!
The Duellists by scribbs
We move on to something Historical and a fun little diorama from scribbs who was inspired by the film, The Duellists.
This focuses on two miniatures (potentially) sculpted by Paul Hicks. On the one side, you have Gabriel Feraud and on the other, Armand d’Hubert. The figures show off the character in their second duel with no dress uniforms and only the breeches to worry about when it comes to respective colouring!
With the two duellists done (and the process documented as part of the project linked above), it was just a case of designing a fitting space for them to hold their duel. The idea here was to great a more vibrant and wild landscape than the one used in the film and I think that scribbs has done a sterling job as you'll see below.
I love seeing these little diversions into something unique and different from the community. It's something that I feel is healthy for your hobby in the long run. Powering through the same project can be rewarding but it might also end up being a bit mind-numbing. So, distracting yourself with something quirky and different might be both inspiring and serve as a nice break away from the tireless batch painting of a larger project.
Epic Space Marines by thursday
Last but not least, we're delving into an Epic project where we're seeing what thursday has been doing to bring some brilliant 6mm miniatures to life on the tabletop. The idea here is to paint the whole of the 3rd Company Blood Angels for use in some awesome games set against the backdrop of the Warhammer 40,000 universe but in Epic scale.
So far, the work is going well and plenty of blood red Space Marines are making their way into the collection looking like a grizzled force for use on the tabletop. There was some back and forth as to which set of rules are going to be used for this, going between Space Marine and Epic Armageddon but it seems like Epic Armageddon is going to end up being the focal point of this project from a rules perspective.
As it stands, it seems like thursday has been through the wringer with this project. At times it feels like it might have been too much and at other times, things are going hunky-dory! I must admit, I sometimes fall into the same pocket of disillusionment that thursday does, where they wonder if they have the eyes and skills for painting such small miniatures. All I have to say to that is, power on Battle Brother, as I think it's easier than you think.
It certainly seems like thursday has grappled with this now and done some great work, blasting through additional troops for this expanding Space Marine force.
What has also been nice is that even though thursday doesn't find themselves with the amount of time they'd like for this project, some early morning painting has done the job. Moving away from the doomscrolling that we're all very much aware of and instead sitting down to do some painting has meant that the likes of the Devastator squads above got painted up and ready for battle.
There is also a great little addition to the project where thursday talked about the late, great Ian Watson, who paved the way for Warhammer fiction back in the day. What do you remember as being your first Warhammer novel?
What Are You Painting Right Now?
Every week, we’re absolutely blown away by the incredible topics that are put into the Projects; it’s getting more difficult to choose Community Spotlights! We love your work and we hope to see a lot more of it in the future!
If you fancy getting your hobby fingers out and showing off your newest paint job, terrain piece or even greatest gaming achievement, we want to know about it! Inspiring projects, congrats winners
Thanks for the GB. I follow both of the other winning projects and am pleased to be in such exulted company. Well done to you both.
Thanks for the GB and the kind words. The two other projects hit the nostalgia hard, great showcases for older figures. I think Space Marine was my first GW big box game, and I have fond memories those square based tiny five man Marine squads. Not painting them though, as it was well beyond my skill at the time!
Thank you again for this honor. I will endeavour to get to the end of myself imposed challenge.
