About the Project
This is a little tale of how Zombies became a favourite genre of mine and sparked a hobby project to honour the films and books that have influenced my tastes over the years. Project Cornetto began as an idea back in 2016 following the release of The Walking Dead All Out War and became a full scale terrain project finished in 2023.

A labour of love. The photodump.
I had no idea how this was going to play out. I was stressed and tired from building all night and I now had 8 of my colleagues looking at me. I say looking at me, that only when I commenced. Hell they spent a long time just pouring over the table. I cant blame them. I spent ages just scrolling through the map as it were.
Each player brought their own custom model to represent them, or borrowed one of mine that visually matched their appearance.
I put all the pics up on the Walking Dead AOW FB group and the feedback has been lovely. I’m humbled by the positive comments.
I really enjoyed a recent comment on the facebook group when I posted all my images; I cant seem to see this comment anymore but it mentioned that each time they looked at a picture, they discovered something new with every viewing. This brought a great sense of joy as I meant I had accomplished something I had intended when trying to make the board immersive and detailed.
So here’s the board in all its glory before I take you down the path of the 8 survivors who showed up and set forth towards the fictional town of Docking. Keep an eye on the road signs, they held in jokes and messages meant for my work group. I will add images with captions as I go and bring you on the summarised version of an 8 hour, no breaks, epic gaming marathon.
This project was a labour of love and I look forward to playing more games using all the terrain. I will play Shaun of the Dead, when I get around to writing a full scenario for it.
The Walking Dead - Fallen Kingdom battle report.
The players awoke cold and hungry. It was three hours till everyone next needed to eat of face falling ill. A leader was chosen and two team were formed splitting resources to allow for carrying scavenged items. Only the leader held a firearm and only a few hand weapons were passed out. One group spent 5 minutes game time travelling to an orchard for some scrumping. They found one decent tree and failed to scrump the rest.
Team 2 thought there may be something useful in the back of the Royal Mail van. Both teams spent 5 minutes of game time travelling and then more time cautiously moving to avoid detection. Team 2 forced the back of the van which caused noise and attracted a Walker. They did find some more warm clothes and rucksacks to use.
With a walker pulled in, Woody the team wildcard decided he was brave and moved in to kill. The rest of the team continued to pick the bones of the delivery truck. Woody was able to headshot the walker with a two by four, getting an early kill in.
After picking the bones clean in both areas the players opted to all RV at a car with a note left for Sofia to wait there. The group use up travel time to all arrive at the same location. All players had a good a searching cars on route and a few items of food were found and luckily some antibiotics, which an NPC needed. This was a rare find.
Each foot of movement was 5 minutes in game time. The full table was 12ft by 4ft so based on 6 meters to a cm, the relative time for travelling the whole table from farm house to Winchester was 55 minutes game time. Which worked out perfectly. Travel was an important aspect of the rules I wrote for the game. Players could fast travel or combat pace. Fast travel is mapped on a time sheet and includes random event and encounters. Combat pace is the choice to move the models via actions and using measurement in inches. If one team was 10 minutes ahead, the other team and or player catching up would get the opportunity to have multiple turns first based on time.
With two travel events triggered, the players spotted a crashed military truck and a point of interest spawned in an area near to the home base. It would require a scouting check to reveal it. Players continued to search cars and move toward the military truck. One of the players Candyman was having a terrible time searching. Not obtaining a single success, we joked that he was just checking the tyre treads. This evolved into Candmans role to only being someone who does POWDER checks on cars. The group eventually moved in on the military truck and fought with walker in the area. The players then discovered a military camp near the truck (convenient for a random event). It was a difficulty two scout role, so I’m impressed they got it this early on. Team 1 moved in the on the Camp. Team two headed to a nearby field with Candyman performing more POWDER checks on the way.
Candyman, knighty and the survivors leader Smithy (These are our nicknames at work) went to scavenge nearby police vehicles. The encountered Chris the Hunter butchering a deer but offering free meat. As time was ticking down, the group needed to get a move on finding food to feed the NPCS. They took the risk and spook to the very nice Chris who taught them skinning and hunting talents. He also provided food. Enough for the group to feed the NPC’s. Chris then said his good byes and left. Smithy (who in reality had already been on the White Russians since 11am and was now half cut) chose to take the food solo back to the farm. Yes they put a drunk man in charge with a gun. On route back to farm, Smithy sense that he was being observed, but by whom.
Penny (our local man mountain with arms the size of thighs, represented by an Arnie model) moved on the military truck with Gordo. Their looting gave them a plethora or semi decent guns. However the winner was Scott who found an AR15 (which he never got to use). Wild card Woody found a pistol and was keen to use it even through there was clearly a large group of walkers in the area and area threat tracker rising. The team had to use a manipulate from Elmo to keep woody calm. Following a roll off, Elmo one and convinced Woody not to fire the gun. So instead Woody charged in head long with his 2by4. He was overwhelmed pretty quickly which left Penny and Gordo no option but to charge in and help. (Why is there alway one in RPG session who does this).
Further checks brought more food scavenged from cars. Team 2 got lucky again and found more medication. Knighty and Candy then moved to the next zone over into a construction yard. Where they found a man trapped under a fence. They discussed leaving, killing and helping him. They ended up helping and forcing the fence off him. For his gratitude they received information about activity at Starbuck and and a well armed woman. This would be the survivors next port of call.
Woody was in trouble. But eventually Gordo and Penny rocked up to save him. They battled several zombies as noise brought in more to the area. Penny was a killing machine and worked his was through a good number racking up the kills. The group cleared the area and the threat but didn’t do so well on the searching of the tents. After concluding the area was not working out, everyone decided to link back in and head to a house before moving to Starbucks.
Both the teams linked up in Shaun’s garden, finding his recently discarded records. The group heard people inside the house discussing the Winchester but missed meeting them. The group looked to break in until someone suggested checking if the door was open. Turned out it was and the group avoided making noise. Half cut Smithy fed the NPC’s back at the base but was 40 minutes behind the others. He was also still being watched.
The group entered the house and found several locations of interest. They managed to find some scraps of food but not much else. Wild card Woody stormed around the house with no shits given and walking into the baying arms of a recently deceased. His cocky confidence failed him in the role and he was bitten. A bite is not just based on the AOW dice, thought this is the trigger. I came up with a few roles I would have to conduct based on how many walkers, area threat and other things to see what kind of bite and how. Woody was given a hidden card but in his excitement read it aloud before realising he could have kept the result secret and turned later in the game on purpose as that’s the kind of sabotage play he was going for in his wildcard nature. But he opted for amputation as the bite was survivable. Penny was the only one with a weapon that could do the job, so they held woody down and took his arm. He survived and thankfully to first aid kits and antibiotic they put him in the bed to rest and heal. Battle report part 2 - Those who survived.
The laminated house tiles worked wonderfully. However due to the size of the gaming area, I had to move everyone to another part of the house. This was an issue logistically and by the seventh house, I just gave players the options to search locations without physically moving on a board to save on time. The group lost a good amount of time due to Woody coming to harm, but this times well with Woody needing to leave in reality. It feed into one of my story lines as the player were alerted to noise in the bedroom and running upstairs to find Woody gone and a trail of blood out of the window.
Now drunk in reality, Smithy was having a lovely leisurely stroll in to town, where he visited the point of interest that appeared earlier. A quick scout through his blurry eyes revealed a small camp. He could hear a walker trapped in a tent but simply went “nope” and carried on moving. Smithy was having a great time on his own.
The group the pushed on without Smithy to Starbucks. They moved at combat pace through the town and surrounded the Starbuck on the info that someone may be inside and armed. Their noise brought walkers to the area, but I had forgotten my on spawn rule system, so the group never really face difficult Walker numbers. I did start throwing threats at them for fun, but should have worked more on sticking to my plan. I will remember for next time. The group moved in on Starbucks and were alerted to a blood trail, a crying woman and the sounds of a trapped walker. The group tried to verbally reach out but failed miserably. Eventually they rushed a room to find a woman huddled in a corner with a bite. Further attempts by Candyman to talk to the woman with his large empathy stats, failed several times. The least empathetic player eventually sparked a convo. This presented the group with a new objective. The now soon to be dead woman had gone on a run to find food for her children. They were hidden away at the construction site. She was chased by a another well armed woman which pushed her into a walker. She begs the group to save her children and take care of them. Initially the group said no and groaned at the idea of more mouths to feed, but their morals kicked in and they agreed to help. As a final request she wanted a gun to finish the job herself, but those present refused so she turned quickly and attacked them. Some screwups also lead to another walker breaking free trapping the group inside. Penny the killing machine made quick work and everyone escaped. The group chose to search places on route to the construction site.
The group combat paced via Greggs and the back alleys. Candyman when searching Greggs found a hand in the sausage roll stand which cause him stress. Some food was found but nothing helpful.
The group were suddenly a bit more bolder and cared less about noise and pulling in walkers. They made their way to the construction site, pushing through the main roads, fighting walkers as they went.
The team were spread out and fighting walkers on all fronts. Gordo began to search a van with a message of ‘do not open dead inside’ but managed to not disturb the trap and secured food from the front cabin. Knighty and Penny went from Walker to Walker killing as they went.
Smithy arrived to help and assisted Candyman with some walker, as Candyman seem to only get stressed or pull more surprise walkers into play. He was not having a good dice day.
Elmo in his suit, casually walked down the Main Street heading to the construction site. A leisurely stroll as those around him fought of incoming Walkers.
The group converged on the construction site and found the boys. Elmo failed miserably at breaking the bad news to the kids, which caused the whole group to become stressed due to the distressing nature in how he explained to the boys what happened to their mom. Eventually the NPCs joined the group and drunk Smithy opted to take them back to the farm with some food.
With Smithy taking the boys back to the farm. The team were alerted to what sounded like Woody screaming for help. Some of the group said so him let’s go to the pub, the other decided to take on a rescue mission. The pub team headed to the Winchester and broke in via the from alerting several walkers.
The walkers were no match and Penny was the one to find the Winchester rifle above the bar via some very lucky rolls. Team 2 consisting of Scott, Elmo and Gordo made their way to an abandoned barn, following the scream of woody. Scott had to leave and his character disappeared on route. A random encounter placed a small group of Walker on the road. Gordo and Elmo decided to take more time and go around rather than confront. This was very time consuming and all survivors were now looking at only an hour before the next required meal for them and NPCs and as a group they were very much lacking the supplies to feed enough people. If NPCs go hungry they get sick and die quite quickly, it’s slower for players but they become exhausted and burdens for other player before they become sick. Time was ticking. Battle report part Three - The end is nigh.
It’s amazing how quickly things can turn to shit. I love it. Smithy the illustrious drunk leader had taken the kids back to the farm to discover a walker in the pig pen eating the pigs. He killed the walker and with his skills taught by Chris the hunter, he was able to salvage some non infected food. Speaking of Chris the hunter. Gordo and Elmo approached the barn with caution and managed to catch Chris off guard. Gordo was lucky enough to have scavenged a compound bow and put a bolt through Chris winding him. Chris returned fire and clipped Elmo. Gordo finished off Chris and the two searched the burnt out barn to find Chris was carving Woodys leg like a Christmas turkey. This caused stress for both players. Poor old woody was properly amputated for a banquet. Whilst dealing with this distressing scene, Gordo and Elmo found themselves in the heart of a trap. The hunters had returned and were now attacking from hidden positions surrounding the barn.
Smithy was nearby, but struggled to get his drunk ass over walls, alerting more walkers. Gordo got a lucky shot off and took out a hunter sniping from the back of a truck. Another hunter popped up and hit Elmo putting him down another wound.
The brazen hunter gave no f***s and poured on automatic fire. This brought a lot of walkers to the area and raised the threat very high. This was bad as the barn was not far from a farm and if it reached threat level 6 a herd would have formed and begun rampaging through. The players spent all their time scavenging rather than looking after the farm so it would not have faired well. To make things worse, they only had 45 game minutes before the NPCs needed to eat. All the while, the other were enjoying a nice pint waiting for it to all blow over at the Winchester. Well I say that, but actually they were fighting for their lives trying to exit the out which had also been surrounded.
It was not looking good. Both be teams tied up fighting for their lives. Very little food scavenged and the threat level in each respective area rising. The hunter found himself fighting off walkers and a further hunter snuck up on Elmo. After a quick hand to hand find, Elmo was knocked unconscious. Gordo was in a full panic. Surrounded with a downed colleague and time running short. He managed to send another perfect bolt striking and killing a hunter. Smithy arrived in time to start clearing out the walkers and lowering the high threat so close to home.
There was quite a lot of walkers to deal with thanks to the hunters and their noise, but the two actually made short work of them. Meanwhile Penny had to leave which timed conveniently with his group splitting up in two. It was said that Penny was last seen heading north through Docking on a mission to save as many as he could. That was the last the group saw of the killing machine.
Candyman was now dodging zombie in the main streets rushing to get back to the farm with what little food he had scavenged. The treat still didn’t have enough to feed the NPCs let alone themselves. Except Smithy. Smithy in his drunken leader wisdom kept some food for himself which he refused to give to the hungry civilians. Oh smithy.
Candyman was racing back and decided to fast travel and risk an encounter. He had half an hour to return and was 25 minutes away in travel time. He managed to roll a helpful NPC encounter and on this occasion the NPC just happened to be me. Being the kind soul I am, I gave him just enough food to feed the NPCs and one of the players. I also informed him of a secret weapon stash at the constructions site (they didn’t find it as the game ended before the had the chance so I took no photos, but there is a hidden compartment under the concrete where I had a weapon token. It would have been cool to reveal). Anyway, helpful me gave Candyman what he needed after they bumped into each other and then parted ways, as I ventured forth to help others in need. I will return as me to play in later games as we explore more around the Town of Docking and beyond in The Fallen Kingdom.
Smithy and Gordo managed to drag Elmo back to the farm. Thankfully there were still antibiotics and first aid to revived him. Candyman arrived not long after bringing food to the hungry.
The group patched themselves up and removed stress, but they were hungry and some had already missed their first meals. After 8 hours of real time play with no breaks (everyone was too invested), the game came to a natural stopping point. Knighty was the last to return to the farm, but everyone had survived thus far. Scott and Penny were missing and as part of the plot in the end, Elmo and Gordo were mistaken with the leg. It’s not woody’s. Woody is out there somewhere but who has him if not the hunters? There a rumour going around about a well armed gang called the saviours and tales of Walker herd moving as if they were organised. There’s a lot more going on in this town and the surrounds. As a group it was an amazing day to play out a big game on a lush table. We plan to continue our tales in The Fallen Kingdom but on a smaller scale. This won’t be the last big game, but for now, our fight for survival is just beginning. I’ll leave this post with some final shots taken after the game. *queue the musical single The Gonk*List of products.

I was saddened by putting everything away after the event. I decided to prop up a smaller zone in my gaming area to dip in an out of the longer campaign I intend to run as part of Fallen Kingdom. My friends are all keen too and many went out an eBay bought the walking dead game, even after I warned them it’s coming back and to be patient. But like me they are gamers and patiently waiting for the next cool game is not a thing. Buying all the game and never painting all of it is the gamer way. Here is another photo dump of some random shots around a more condensed Cornetto.
