About the Project

I have some very good friends who chipped in to pick up the newest core box for Marvel Crisis Protocol for my birthday present. One of the benefits of celebrating in my Friendly Local Game Store apparently. While I have wanted to paint some of these minis since I first saw them, I haven't been sure about diving into the entire game. Well, two of our group are completely addicted so I will have folks to play the game with, unlike my Burrows and Badgers undertakings. I must admit to being a little overwhelmed by the contents of the Core Set. There are all the rules, templates, counters, dice, terrain, and minis needed to play. Speaking of the minis, there are 13 in the new set and they are wonderful little sculpts, great detail and movement. I think this is going to be fun. Now I just need to avoid diving into the deep end and trying to acquire everything. Anyone who has been following this blog will know I have failed to restrain myself. Despite still not having played the game I have just about every character made and two thirds of them are painted. At least I'm getting some good work done.

As folks can probably guess, the title translates to,” I finished painting Groot”.  Another super fun sculpt that painted fairly quickly.  I painted him and Rocket at the same time so their bases and root/branch all match together. Thinking about this is part f what drove me to start adding things to some of my bases.  More on the results of that soon.  This guy, and all of my Guardians of the Galaxy, were actually finished a month ago but life has gotten in the way of my photographing

With the completion of The Mighty Thor I have now painted at least one of every character from the MCU’s Avengers film, well both of the first two films since Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are already done. I’ve gone a little more blue than the black of the box art but I still like how he came out. I’m really excited to have another version of him as well as Jane’s iteration of the character coming out later this year. I still haven’t played the game but won’t stop painting now. Besides, Namor is almost here…

CP74 Red Skull and Hydra Troopers is finished.  This is my second set of Grunts after Ultron and his drones though Nick Fury Sr and the Howling Commandoes felt similar with three figures on one big base.  I have no idea how to use these in game or even what they do different than characters but it should be fun finding out.  Fingers crossed that I get some game play in this weekend at KublaCon, one of my favorite game conventions in the San Francisco Bay Area.It has an amazing community of minis painters and a great Painting Exhibition.

The Unstoppable Juggernaut is Painted

I have completed painting the massive bruiser that is Juggernaut.  He is on the largest of the bases Atomic Mass makes and he is huge.  He is easily as large as Rhino and Immortal Hulk.  Not sure how he plays in the game but I’d like to see a bunch of these huge guys take each other on sometime.  Wonder when AMG will release an Abomination model.

One of the nice things about Atomic Mass Games is that the bases for the minis look like urban streets and that they include extras with the minis.  While this works well for figures that look like they are in New York City, or any other modern metropolis, the “tactical” items that many of the characters are based on just don’t work as well.  I began to notice this a little while ago but only just decided to make some changes once I built Dare Devil, Spider Woman, and Agent Venom as they all look like they are moving through a graveyard.  While very cool looking, they just didn’t fit the sidewalks and streets that are the current bases.  So I decided to attach sand and gravel using acrylic gloss medium as it is much stronger for attaching to plastic.  With Dare Devil I decided to use the flat base of service doors and some brickwork.  I think this will make for a nice “graveyard path” look.

I picked up the Wakanda Affiliation pack a while ago and had to assemble and prime the four of them immediately.  As I have worked my way through a lot of figures I finally reached this group.  Being an Avenger as well as the Leader of the Wakanda Affiliation I started with Black Panther.  King T’Challa has long been a favorite character of mine so glad to get him into the collection.  The MCU films have only solidified that love.

Scarlet Witch Materializes to Spread Mayhem Through the Multiverse

For all the simplicity of Quicksilver’s pose, the Scarlet Witch is the opposite.  She is floating in the air held aloft by tendrils of the spell she is casting.  A gorgeous model that was lots of fun to paint but those tiny strands and bits were rather difficult to work with.  In the end I did succeed in getting pieces glued where they belonged but it did require some patience.  As I have learned by now, these itty-bitty bits and pieces require a tray to work in while assembling.  I haven’t lost a single piece since implementing this policy.  I do not miss kneeling on the floor with a flashlight trying to tell tiny model parts from pebbles and floor fluff.

Quicksilver has been completed and is ready to join either an Avengers Affiliation or The Brotherhood. He is a simple enough sculpt and paint scheme.  Seems like he will be a natural Objective grabber but I will have to play a few games with him to know for sure.
