About the Project

Inspired by the band Soundgarden, Limorekh was recorded but never finished. Now, it returns to be remastered. A Necron Dynasty reinterpreted through new paints, refined techniques, and a deeper exploration of its living metal identity. The signal resumes.

So the good news is that between 2020 and 2023 I did actually paint a reasonable sized army. Ok, so I didn’t move the Soundgarden theme on very much, but I did get a couple of games of 10th Edition in with them.

These are pictures of my cabinet, taken today.  I’ll cover my old painting steps later on because I am going to try to match or refresh the scheme now I have changed paint ranges!  I’ll do a before and after process comparison.

So, not too shabby in terms of getting an army done – it’s my biggest by quite some distance – but far from realising the initial idea for the project.  Which is why we are here!

This project started in 2020, I last touched it in 2023, and to my regret it remains unfinished.

This is probably the best idea for a project I’ve ever had, so it deserves to be completed!

The idea formed whilst listening to some music.  Grunge music.  I love me a bit of Soundgarden, and it occurred to 6-years-ago me that Soundgarden’s song “Limo Wreck” from their 1994 album Superunknown could easily be spelt “Limorekh”.  Limo Wreck is very present-time Earth, but Limorekh is altogether more 40k and very Necrony indeed!

And it got better.  On their 2012 post-comeback album “King Animal” they produced a logo.  A logo that couldn’t be more Necrony if they tried.  I mean seriously, are these guys Necrons in disguise?!

The Day I Tried to Live

When I started the project, I had the names all planned out – a Necron character for each band member:

Chris Cornell (vocals) = Overlord Kor’Nell

Kim Thayill (Guitar) = Kymtayl The Slayer

Ben Shepherd (Bass) = Beinn The Shepherd

Matt Cameron (Drums) = Kam’Ron The Noisebringer

I wanted to ‘Necronify’ the band members sufficiently so that they could be the generals of the army. Helpfully in the latest lore for 40k, the Necrons are very focussed on restoring themselves to their previous ‘flesh lives’ and flashbacks to their flesh based past are common.  This can allow us to link alien metal characters to something more familiar and, well, fleshy…

At this stage, back in 2020, I hadn’t worked out which models to use, but there will be more on this later. (Spoiler alert: I haven’t got much further in the ensuing 6 years 😂)

Finally, the lyrics to the song Limo Wreck itself set the scene perfectly for a Necron army:

And the wreck of you
Is the death of you all
And the wreck of you is the break and the fall
I’m the wreck of you
I’m the death of you all
I’m the wreck of you
I’m the break and the fall

And with that, Limorekh was born!

The Day I Tried to Live

Next, we will catch up on where the project got to between 2020 and 2023…
