Of Oil and Iron – A Salute Discovery

About the Project
Of Oil and Iron had a stand at Salute 53. It's a Dystopian Dieselpunk setting where a terrible smogfall environmental event causes a collapse of society. No nations remain, only a handful of corporations and rebels and mercenaries. Only areas with adequate filtration are safe to breath, like the company housing and in the factories of the corporations. A forever war situation ensues as corporations fight for the world's last resources. Of Oil and Iron feels like a fun game. And the minis are nice. It's a 3d print digital campaign in essence, but Lazerforge are a UK company that print them. I also reached out to the creator of the game and made a printed model purchase as a bit of a one off after Salute.

Arcus Infantry
I hadn't expected these 5 Arcus Infantry Droids in my order so it was a really nice surprise bonus item.
I went with weird colour choices on the leads at the waist and shoulders just because all beiges and greys would have been too boring.Mercenary / Nomad medium rig - Drifter
Kitbash fun. The Pickelhaube Light rig.
The Pickelhaube Mercenary rig or “Frankenstein’s tin soldier” as its enemies mockingly called it, never went into full production. It was an effort to use refinery parts and a captured Triton Engineering rig warehouse complex to fashion a workable cheap rig class of their own. Only seeing a couple of prototypes before being abandoned the project has been classed as a failure. But those that survive still carry weapons to their enemy effectively and are easy to adapt and repair. For example on this rig a foot was blown off and some clever engineer fashioned pincers as a workable foot.
The minis for this game come with lots of weapon options. But then some had spare legs for different poses I guess. I had a spare foot and spare arm pieces. All I needed was a main body and some connecting pieces and I was away. I kept some sprues from 15mm tanks and those parts really helped. The helmet came from some automaton minis I am building, made by the same company, and the top of the body is a can ring pull. The body is a diabetic needle casing. It's all a bit fragile, but a lot of fun to bodge together. It's a bit taller than I hoped, but not taller than most of the minis I already have.Triton Engineering - Kraken Heavy Rig
Maybe the barbed wire is a little tall for 15mm scale, but in actual fact some of the barbed wire used on border crossing points can be as tall as a man so not too worried about it.
There are also Collosus scale rigs in the game, but initially I am not too interested in those. Just because one barrier with me and mech games is the suspension of disbelief and the hundreds of feet high massive robots. It just feels like something that people wouldn't make and would break down too easily. If resources are scarce who is ploughing so many tons of steel / iron / fuel / manhours into something bigger than a block of flats? I am not consistent on this view and can find bigger models fun and fitting at times. Triton Engineering - Trench
Golden Button!!! "Trench!"
I got a Golden Button Community Spotlight award for this project. 🤗😁👍👍👍😍
It’s always a lovely feeling to get a bit of kudos for your efforts. Being a long time Backstager and Cultist I have picked up a few buttons over the years, but it never gets any less impactful on my mood and often comes when a boost was needed most.
At the end Gerry was hilariously insistent that I hurry up and paint a Trench variant mech ASAP…. So I did as I was told.
28mm Infantry
Been painting up some 28mm minis from the Of Oil and Iron universe. Started with the Triton Marines, leaning on the nautical Bioshock vibes and the yellow of the Triton faction.
