Community Spotlight: Vampire Lords, Cryx & A Forest Of Ents
May 6, 2026 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Prince Vhordrai by miniaturebrushwork
We start off this week with a look at what miniaturebrushwork has been doing when it comes to their hobby. They have been working on the Soulblight Gravelords for Warhammer Age of Sigmar and one of the most recent additions to their finished collection was the impressive job on Prince Vhordrai.
This is a great-looking miniature that harks back to the classic Warhammer Fantasy Battle days of the Blood Dragons in the Vampire Counts of old. I really like the miniature and I have a friend who collects Soulblight Gravelords, so this was impressive to see pop up as I see these miniatures a lot. It reminded me a lot of the fun that you can have when painting the range, exploring the different painting techniques that you can use on dead flesh, rusted armour, haunting glows and more.
As miniaturebrushwork mentions as part of their project, this was an interesting experiment in two different styles of painting. On the one hand, you have the speedpaints and washes that were used on the dragon to get across that dead flesh but also that haunting final look. Its also a great way to do the wet blending that you need for those transitions without having to fiddle around with traditional paints and glazes.
Prince Vhordrai himself was then painted in a more traditional way, opting for classic paints in order to bring him to life. I think that works too as it helps to focus the attention more on the Prince despite how massive the actual mount ends up being! I also really like the basing for the miniature. Detailed but not taking away from the final miniature. It does that job of framing the final miniature rather than diverting attention from it.
Cryx by gleicher27
Next up, we're moving to the work of gleicher27, who has been working their way through some classic Cryx miniatures to use as part of a Warmachine project.
Before Steamforged Games acquired Warmachine, gleicher27 had got their hands on a fairly large array of miniatures for both Cryx and Cygnar. Whilst they would normally go for Cygnar, they opted to try out painting the Dark Host and have fun with working through this ghostly and ghastly faction!
gleicher27 is making good use of this project to explore diving into the Spring Clean Hobby Challenge for this year and is already doing sterling work. The classic paint scheme for Cryx looks great on these miniatures and I appreciate the effort that has gone into painting up the armour but also doing all of that fearsome trim! One of the hallmarks of Cryx is also the addition of lots of green and glow effects and I think that gleicher27 has done a great job on the Warjacks and such here to make them pop.
gleicher27 has gone to the trouble of documenting the painting of these various miniatures and how they've opted to work on them. So, if you like the way that they're painted, you can follow along and work on your own miniatures to match. Working their way through the larger Warjacks and such is a good idea, I think, as it gets the bulk of the work out of the way and then gleicher27 can switch over to working on their Warcaster as a bit of a treat. I will be following along to see where this project ends up!
Ents by holly
Last but not least, we have some excellent Ents from holly who has been adding to their Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game project. This is a great collection of miniatures from Games Workshop and Forge World as well as a few well-chosen 3D printed miniatures that match the style of the Middle-earth range.
I really love the Ents of Middle-earth and I always get fascinated by people who paint them up. I think that holly has done a brilliant job here, working on each of them to make them feel as natural as possible whilst also bringing the right focus onto their character. For example, their faces stand out really nicely, which is key, I think.
I also like that holly hasn't skimped on the basing materials and has made sure that each of the Ents look like they are striding out of Fangorn or perhaps The Old Forest on the borders of The Shire. Making good use of some of the basing material on the trees themselves also works very nicely. Not so much that it looks odd either!
holly mentioned that this didn't take that long to paint either. The majority of the work was done with drybrushing and washes which meant that a lot of the extra effort could be put into the basing for the miniatures. According to them, they were a joy to paint. That's great as I already have a plan for my own Ents that are waiting in the wings to be ordered for some Middle-earth fun on the tabletop!

Lovely projects all round. I particularly like the basing and extra tufts on the Ents, it really adds to the impact of the models.
Three worthy projects!
@holly those Ents are simply stunning – worthy of tearing apart Isengard!!!
@miniaturebrushwork love the Vampire Counts – I used to play them in Fantasy, and hope they (and Skaven) re-appear in The Old World
Good work all around. Hobby builds up hobby
Congrats Winners, Lovely work 🙂
