Completed Deff Dredd!
And for some reason, I didn’t take any more pictures after that until it was finished! 🙁
But, you can see the extra details (hazard stripes, lenses, tusks) and weathering using weathering powders before finishing up the base with a cracked dry earth and a few plants.
Colour and chipping
This (badly lit image) shows the armour panels now that colours and highlights have been stippled on.
I’ve also sponged on some chipping, first in black, then in silver and highlighted the edges in a orangey-red. I’ll add a post later that goes through these stages better.
Colour blocking
One thing I’ve become a real convert to over the last 5 years or so is contrast paints. I like using them as part of different techniques, so while they’re great for colour blocking? Using them as a base for drybrushing, thinning to be glazes etc is also cool.
At this stage, I’ve brushed metals all over the black areas, completing the underframe and pintle weapons.
Then, Blood Angels Red over most of the armour, with Nazdreg Yellow for the erm, yellow.
After this, I’ll be adding more highlighting and definition to those panels.
Getting basics in
One of things I did in the autumn was invest in a new painting station to be able to better organise my materials and be able to paint in the living room.
I got this one from Hobbies online, and a couple of extra organisers to go with. What really was the game changer though was decanting all my paints into dropper bottles. It took ages but the result has been well worth it and it’s become a real productivity boost.
This image shows the Deff Dredd after being primed and with some black contrast being applied to all the areas which will be metal.
Getting started
My local Morrisons had the magazines that make an Ork Deff Dredd. I figured that £20 to get a £40 kit was pretty good value, so picked them up.
These are such fun kits to build. I didn’t follow the instructions and only after building it with far too many arms did I realise that they are also meant to have some ranged weaponry, doh!
Never mind, pintle mounted machine guns solve that problem and make it look more orky.
