I may have read this wrong as I am still trying to get to grips with the new rules, but should there have been a 3 inch pile in at each initiative step meaning the orks would have had more models in combat?
@chaoticcomander That’s my understanding too. The boy that’s too far away wouldn’t be as there’d be another pile in at the I2 phase.
Given the intent in the video is an introduction to 6th for old and new players alike I think it’s remiss to have skipped overwatch. A more minor comment is all the ork boyz would have had 3 attacks; 2 on the profile and 2 close combat weapons so 3 over all.
Otherwise a good overview of the concepts of assault =)
@chaoticcomander and @yarr I believe that as lahmeck said, the pile in moves are done at the unit/model’s initiative step, the book says, “At the start of each Initiative step, any modei whose Initiative is equal to the value of the current Initiative step, that isn’t already in base contact with an enemy model, must make a Pile In move.” This would mean that the marines would have charged, then as it comes to initiative step 4 so the marines pile in and make attacks, then at initiative step 2 the orks pile in and make attacks. Though this does pose the possibility that if the marines kill enough orks, because the casualties are removed from the front, the remaining orks’ pile in move does not get them into base contact to make attacks
That’s kinda of what we said but the main point is the BoW guys did it wrong. From the way I read it they did it right up until the bit where they pile in the boyz. What should have happened is the I4 fight sub-phase would occur and the majority of Space Marines would get a further 3″ move. Some of the ones from the initial assault moves that could only get within 2″ of an assaulter would then move further forward to get into base-to-base contact with another Ork. I’m pretty sure that would draw the marines further forward.
One that sub-phase has been resolved the I2 sub phase would happen and then the Orks would move their 3″ so at that point they wouldn’t move any futher than they did in this video however the marines are closer from their additional 3″ move in their I4 step.
My personal opinion on 6th is I think it’s far too fiddly now and combat is too clunky. The way the Darrell and Warren did it is the way I’d prefer to do it but that’s pretty much 5th edition, not 6th.

Yeah I cant see the video just yet either. But yeah as I red the rules.. each initive step.. in theory 10.. but it would never be that many.. would do there pile in’s at the END of each step.. so charge..highest ints go first.. pile in..then assult first.. gets attacks back.. then next higest int pile in.. and so on.. as ive read it that is.

They also should have mentioned that the orks had a chance to shoot the marines on the charge in to.
Yeah, ork hordes snap shooting seems scary as hell (Not much of a downgrade from BS 2 to 1).
They probably toked down because forgot to mention the snap fire phase. As soon as the space marines declare the assault even if they are not able to make it, the Orks can attack with a snap fire shot, which has to be make with a BS of 1. And you can not do a snap fire with template weapons. Armor saves can be made as normal and after this phase, the player who declare the charge can roll 2D6 to see if he is able to charge.
As an exception flamers can do snap shots, but instead of the template it’s d3 automatic hits on the assaulting unit, if I recall correctly.
Doesnt “overwatch” imply you are watching and tracing an area with your gun, ready for stuff that might pop up? How come then when it comes to hitting anything becomes a disorganized and panicked situation? really cant see what would be hard about hitting something that comes running straight at you,wish they would at some point try and make the game just a bit more realistic.

I´m getting used to the new rules, as everyone, but I think you haven´t done the pile in movements correctly. First, the orks shouldn´t have made that pile in move before rolling the marine attacks; and then, at the begining of every step of iniciative (in this case, I4 and I2), the miniatures attacking should move those 3″ before making their attacks.
Anyway, in this case the result is the same, and of course it´s a great introduction to the assault phase for new players. Good job!!
I agree there is heaps more going on in close combat now. With overwatch then chalenges then wounds and pile ins in each initive step. then the fleeing and overun they need like a seperate 20 min job for each step.

Loving the videos that Beasts of War are pumping out for 6th Edition, very entertaining.
However, I have a couple of points for you:
I like the fact you are doing videos for beginners. As a returning player I find this to be a good reinforcement to my rules reading however I do feel that no matter how basic you want to present the rules you have to get the fundamentals right.
–> ‘Overwatch’ most definitely should have been shown, big change to the game.
–> It is my understanding that the Orks can only ‘Pile In’ at their ‘Initiative Step’ in the ‘Fight Sub Phase’ or at the end of the combat assuming they remain in it. In other words, the Space Marines get to charge and make attacks against the Orks before they themselves can ‘Pile In’ and attack because the Space Marines have a higher initiative value.
I haven’t had much time to read over the rules but that is my understanding. What do you think?

The above poster is correct. This assault was handled more like 5th than 6th.
After the charging unit is moved, no models are re-arranged until it is their initiative step, at which point they get a 3″ pile in.
This includes the charging unit. Meaning that in this example the Space Marines would have charged, and on their initiative step, piled in deeper, and then attacked.
After which, at initiative 2, the Orks (having received casualties they removed closest to farthest) would get to pile in 3″ and attempt to make base contact.
This is extremely important as damage is dealt closest-to-farthest, where the defender picks when two models are equal (i.e. both in base contact, neither one is “closer).
Ergo, in this example, the space marines being the aggressors, and also being higher initiative would have the opportunity to better arrange their assault to “focus” their attacks on things like Nobs (who get look out sir) or special weapons (who get nothing) before the Orks can pile in and give themselves more options to take wounds on.
This lets you pull the teeth out of a unit before it gets to strike back.
Overall, hugely disappointed with this video as it just taught however many people who watched it instead of reading the rules completely wrong.
A few things:
– no mention of the Orks getting to shoot overwatch.
– the Orks should not have moved the 3″ pile in until it was their initiative turn. It didn’t change the results in this example, but it could have.
– WYSIWYG is no longer mentioned in the rule book, implying it’s optional (or at least no mandatory). Won’t matter for friendly games but might for tournaments.
– LMAO when you rolled the four ones 🙂
– forgot to mention the marines would have gotten an additional 3″ pile-in move at their initiative level.

However there was no mention of overwatch and if I am reading it right based on the higher initiative the orks would of moved after the assault from marines, into a 3 inch pile. Also to try and model your troops based on WYSI WYG.
Is totally ridiculous for a number of reasons one of which is even with kit bashing it is impossible to create a 100% WYSI WYG army. GW doesnt even have models for a number of listings in there codexes. Let alone all the different weapons listed, in any one kit.
Besides if you ever want to change up a weapon choice for any reason then your tearing it apart to rework your troops.
Waste of money and time, only socially challenged dweebs who wack off too, the underwear section of department store catalogs, and have made a career out of collecting hair nets and name tags from various fast food restuarants.Would reallly have the time and desire to to do such a thing.

you can paint your army and color code them by painting shoulder pads different colors within a unit to label it as the troop with a melta gun or plasma gun. Or color code a whole group of orks to represent ‘ard boys ETC…
You don’t have to buy more troops everytime you want to make a change thats crazy…
