On the point about fantasy and sci-fi being tied to a single manufacturer, I think that’s largely a GW hang-up. I’ll admit I’m definitely prone to it myself. A universe’s aesthetic matters a lot to me. I’m not going to drop a bunch of Space Marines into a game of Infinity and call them PanO, and I’m not going to stick 10mm Enforcers on the table and pretend they’re Space Marines in Epic. They just don’t fit the look or feel of those settings. If I’m playing Star Wars, I don’t want to face off against generic space soldiers. I want to see Stormtroopers, or at least something that feels like it belongs in that universe. For me, it’s all about immersion.

I’ve no issue with alternatives, as long as they actually look like they belong. Third parties can absolutely manage that without straight-up copying.

Maybe it’s a failure of imagination on my part, fair enough. At this stage I’ve accepted it’s just how I’m wired. And yeah, I can see how that sounds a bit contradictory given my earlier gripe about the not-GW 3d sculpting crowd while also arguing for consistent aesthetics. But humans are nothing if not internally inconsistent.
