Ideally I’d like the product in shops, but again I have no understanding of how this is achieved.

Either you phone every shop on your own and ask them to put your stuff on the shelf or you find a wholesaler that does that for you. If your product is really good and people start pestering their FLGS about it the stores might knock on your door.
