About the Project

Set against a backdrop of a Civil War that lasted for two years, 1215-17, as a result of the issuing of Magna Carta. A civil war was the perfect opportunity for the leading nobles of the time to grab land and power while settling some old scores along the way. This vying for land and power hadn't stopped since the invasion of 1066 with only the strongest of kings being able to keep their nobles in check. Our narrative focuses on small groups of warriors brought together under a lord or baron to raid and steal or defend land and property. With the strong, wise, cunning and lucky aiming to rise out of this civil strife in a better position than when it started. The Barons' War skirmish game has been written to enable players to fight out tabletop battles against the backdrop of the First Barons’ War between rival Barons or rival factions who find themselves on either side of the conflict. The game is historically themed, the gameplay is fast-paced and tactical with plenty of narrative and where force building presents you with lots of options enabling two players to muster very different retinues. However, as intended, this is an alpha set of rules which does not include rules for siege warfare, although rules for fighting in buildings are included. Campaign rules are something that will be addressed at a later date and released online. Having grown out of the Barons’ War Kickstarter project, the intention is for this ruleset to develop into a system that could be used throughout the Medieval period. Starting with England from when the Western Roman Empire withdrew around 410 AD to 1485 AD when Richard III died at the Battle of Bosworth Field. This presents us with a huge span of history for gaming which can be broadly divided into Romano-British, Anglo-Saxon and Viking, Anglo-Norman, Angevin and Plantagenet. And that’s just when looking at it from Great Britain. With warriors of this period being pretty similar, it would be easy to use the profiles in this rulebook to play out tabletop battles in any setting. Over time we see these rules evolving with additional warriors, characters, abilities and scenarios being added starting with the Dark Ages, the Anarchy and the Crusades and shared to www.warhost.online, which has been set up to be the community website for the game.

Outlaw BowmenOutlaw Bowmen

I have finished the new Outlaws from the Baron’s War Kickstarter 3 and they are very, very nice. These are just the first couple of units these and the next guys are the more peasant types of Outlaws with they slings and also the leader too.

I went for a earthy colour palette for these as I wanted them to look like they could melt away into the forest or into a urban/village environment. I think I have achieved this and I cannot wait to finish them all so I can work out an Outlaw faction and list.

I was very honoured and pleased to be awarded a Golden Button, actually I think a second one for this Barons War Project. I am especially pleased as it was for the photography and scene setting of the pictures something that I have tried to develop throughout this project.

OTT thank you very much.

ConquestConquest

The Early Medieval (Dark Ages) supplement for Vikings, Late Saxons and Normans is nearly ready.

This new supplement will cover the various factions that you would have imagined would pop up during the Early Medieval (Dark Age) period. The rules for The Barons’ War have been tweaked to include the Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and the Normans alongside special rules for each.

Objective MarkersObjective Markers

Some of you more eagled eyed of you might of noticed in the Partizan gallery that there was a photo with 6 unpainted, 3D printed markers on the table with all the painted stuff and no real explanation. Well here is that explanation.

They are 6 objective markers that Warhost gifted to me for organising the demo game at Partizan and they are a set of 6 objective markers to be used in the Barons’ War game in some of the scenarios. They are really lovely 3D printed and are so well detailed, some are a little fiddly and delicate and might get simplified or made more robust before getting a release but they are beautiful little vignettes.

I have painted the first two up, a scene with a weapons stash and the other is a scene of ecclesiastical, altar condiments after a raid. They were a dream to paint and look amazing painted up. The nice thing is that they can be used as objective markers for  early medieval (Dark Ages) games or high or late medieval games too plus fantasy games and others. I think this are lovely.

The New KnightsThe New Knights

I have finished the latest knights from my Barons’ War Kickstarter 3 and couple of others from Footsore. The knights from the kickstarter are the main character models from Death and Taxes, namely the Sheriff of Nottingham and Guy of Gisborne. I have also added to this with two other knights from the Footsore range. I say knights, they are actually Kings in Robert the Bruce, converted to have a lance instead of an axe and Phillip II of France.

In light blue tunic we have the traitorous Jacque le Grealis, him who used to fight for and led of Aston de Villa and swapped sides and join the villainous forces of Salford Hundred. In the dark blue Sylviane de Rogers, known as The Fox and with herald Jamie du Vardanega from Ledecestre. In the red we have Estienne de Bracey a knight from the northern lands of Litherpul.

The two other knights in green are Augustus de Humerstane, in the dark green who is a weapon swap and crown files away from the original figure of Robert the Bruce. The other knight is Robert Hamilton in the light green and the elephant shield.  I have loved painting them.

Baron's War at Partizan

These are some pictures from the Baron’s war Display games that I organised with the Baron’s War Facebook Group for Other Partizan Wargames Show at the Newark Showground in Newark on 10th October 2021. It was a great show and good company and everyone seemed to enjoy the game and the chat. Cannot wait to the next one. Big thanks to George Asling and Warhost for their support, to Tony Healey, Paul Wilkinson and Jerry Miller for helping with the game.

History of the Show

The Partizan Wargames shows exist to promote a better understanding of the history of human conflict using tabletop simulation and gaming techniques.

The first show, organised by Laurence Baldwin and Duncan Macfarlane was held at Newark in 1986. Since then we have presented more than 60 shows, for many years at Kelham Hall and more recently at the Newark Showground.

The shows are now run as a Community Interest Company in support of the wargaming community and a number of veterans and mental health charities
